20th Century Fox and Peter and Bobby Farrelly have set Sean Hayes to play Larry in The Three Stooges, the slapstick comedy that is slated to begin production later this month.
He joins Will Sasso, who had previously been set to play Curly. The search is still on for the role of Moe, a role that has had a number of actors circling. Hayes has physical comedy chops and showed during readings that he had the ability to play a lovable simpleton, something that amateur boxer-turned-punching bag Larry Fine did so well. Many, including Peter Farrelly, feel that Fine’s understated work anchored the original Stooges shorts by creating a buffer between Moe’s stern persona and Curly’s manic physical comic energy. Hayes was last seen on Broadway in a year-long run in Promises, Promises, has starred in films that include The Bucket List, and of course starred in Will & Grace.
I’ve seen that Deadline readers are reluctant to embrace a Stooges movie, each time I write about it. I see it differently. I am eager to see what the Farrellys are capable of, after putting 12 years into this passion project and honing the script to the point where they feel they can retain the signature slapstick while delivering a PG rating.
I once wrote a Stooges biography (ABC turned it into a telepic), and a section of the book traced the profound influence the Stooges had on writers, filmmakers and comic stars. It also tracked the number of Hollywood filmmakers who tried to make Stooges movies after original performers Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly and Shemp Howard died.
Attempts spanned Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros, MGM and then Fox. The filmmaker that got closest was Mel Brooks, who told me he’d planned to play Shemp, with Marty Feldman playing Larry, and Dom De Luise playing Curly. Brooks turned it into the 1976 comedy Silent Movie. “It was just too hard to do a Three Stooges movie that was two hours or even ninety minutes,” Brooks said. “It’s such physical humor and so hard to sustain a plot that could withstand their antics for that long. I felt it was better to go with a simple story within a story, about a silent movie made to save the silent movie.”
No filmmakers have put more time into a Stooges film than the Farrellys. They’ve been working on script drafts for about 12 years, after employing Stooges-style slapstick in films like Dumb and Dumber with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels and There’s Something About Mary with Ben Stiller. The Farrellys feel they overcame the structural problems encountered by Brooks by breaking the film up into three 27-minute-long segments. The feature tells a single story, but the breaks give the audience a chance to catch its breath. The structure also lends the feel of the abbreviated running time of the original Stooges shorts, and gives the Farrellys the chance to use all three of the signature Stooges theme songs. “There will be non-stop slapping, more in the tone of Dumb and Dumber than anything else we’ve done,” Peter Farrelly told me recently. “Our goal is 85 minutes of laughs in a film that will be very respectful of who the Stooges were. It’s by far the riskiest project we’ve ever done, without question, but it is also the one closest to our hearts.”
If they succeed in creating renewed Stooges interest in kids the same age as those who raced home from school to watch the trio on television each day, the Farrellys could help keep the Stooges from being relegated to history’s dustbin. And if they deliver a PG film at a budget in the $30 million range, Fox has a shot at financial success. WME repped Hayes.

He’s not what I expected but I suppose he could work. Revisionists are doing a lot to try to make Larry awesome but frankly he was just there. It was always all about Moe and Curly or whomever was the third stooge, Larry simply made them three.
This is nonsense. First, the Stooge shorts contradict what you’ve said. Second, if you ever watched any of the existing tapes of Larry Fine’s vaudeville performances, your jaw would be on the ground from his combination of awkward elegance, musical talent, and utterly bizarre sensibility.
Yep you are right. To reduce Larry as simply an extra is crap. I am 61 and have introduced my grandaughters to the awesome 3. Larry was just as much a headliner as the others, (yes I am a Curly fan forever), but I also APPRECIATE Larry Fine for what he was in the AWESOME 3, just as I learned to appreciate Shemp after Curly passed.
To me it shows how extraordinary was their talents, simple slapstick comedy, roots in Vaudeville, and they caught the attention of the whole world (and still do).
May they be blessed in heaven for their contribution to a happier world!
Darryl
I think Robin Williams would make a good Curly. He can even sound like him. that’s my vote.
Yes I agree!! Robin Williams would be awsome!!!
shemp was active long before curly passed
Although Jason Segel would be a better pick – he resembles Larry – Sean Hayes is an excellent actor and will do the job!
I actually thought if this film was made about 8 years ago, that Jon Lovitz would have been a perfect Larry. Not only does he look like Larry (lighten his skin up a bit), but he sounds uncannily like the silent Stooge.
Martin Sheen as Moe……who’s with me???
I think you mean Charlie Sheen? And I could definitely see it…
He should play Moe
I heard Russell Crowe at one point wanted to play Moe.
I personally can’t think of a better “Stooge” these days than Charlie Sheen – that is if you can keep him from going off on his own personal, brain rotted, rants…
I say he’d be the PERFECT stooge these days !!!
GO CHARLIE – SEE IF YOU CAN SINK ANY FURTHER !!!!
NOOOOO to Charlie Sheen it would make me not want to watch it and I Love the Stooges!
Duh…… Winning!!!!!!
russell crowe
I think you mean Martin Short!
Martin Short would be AWESOME!
I think casting missed an opportunity. When I look at that face now I see Jim Cramer!
Jim does have the theatrical qualifications as well.
Jeremy Piven would be a spot-on match for Moe.
I vote for “Krammer” of Seinfeld fame
I agree with you 100%! He has the hair & the “Turrets” style body language.
Krammer—YES – YES – YES
You two mean ‘Kramer’.
I think you mean ‘tourette’s’.
Good casting so far, although I did like the idea of Sean Penn as Larry… There is only one person who can play Moe and that is comedian Jackie Flynn, he is perfect for the part…
you know 3 stooges will neva be replaced but they will allways be in our hearts
3 stooges will be in my heart for ever. Uncle Curly always made me smile.
Your name wouldn’t be Maurer would it?
Larry, Moe and Curly-Joe and Shemp there where 4 stooges if you know anything about them. Also Moe,curly and shemp are real brothers. If they want to make a film right they will need to cast for the other two roles they were in a good number of there films
Its about time, Big stooges fan but who ever commented that larry was only there and not even the third stooge dosen’t know the three stooges to well. facial exLarrys presions where the funniest. when ever anybody was getting slapped or hit. Just watch LARRY.
cmonnnnnnnnnn Larry the cable guy in my opinion is curly all the way people
OMG – Larry the Cable guy for MOE!!! That would be the funniest. He would be the greatest Moe of this generation. I vote Larry the Cable Guy for MOE!!!
OK, With makeup and a wig, I can see it, But is he an actor?
Sean Hayes as Larry…I could see it. But Larry the Cable guy as Moe??? Naw….Think about this, Mel Gibson as Moe Howard. He Knows the material JHis facial structure & shape would work with minimal make-up and lose a little sleep, he would have the bags under his eyes. Larry T cable Guy,…maybe for Curly Or Shemp. That’s what I think
I was always a fan of the 3 stooges. I agree, Larry the Cable guy is the best one to do curly. He has the build, sense of humor in the blue Collar Comedy Tour you see on the Comedy Central channel. He’s hilarious. Get him and you will have a good picture. Leave Charley Sheen out. He’s enough trouble by himself.
I think Joe Pesci or Danny DeVito should play the third stooge.
Danny Devito would be perfect, just the right height too. put alittle more hair. He’s always seems like a serious guy. He’s my vote. :0)
Good call on danny devito or joe pesci. either of them would be perfect
As another note, how quickly are we to judge performers this day and age. We nitpick which of the STOOGES are the best and which are the worst? Shit, how can we do this to real talent? Shit, it’s scary how we so readily condemn others. perhaps it is because OUR lives suck and we are so willing to blame others, even our former role models, as crazy as they may be.
We appreciate in some way how entertainers have helped us, but in our minds we can turn around and blame them for not doing the job perfectly!
Awhile back I wrote a letter to Soupy Sales. He is gone now, but I hope that before he left us he had a chance to read my email. When I was in my early teens, he made a profound difference in my life. My mother had cancer and I was in a very bad place, and his show was the main thing that helped me to cope. I laughed and THAT was a miracle.
What does it take? Do we have to nitpick every opinion that comes along?
Can we just be happy? Can we just appreciate the help that our God,(whatever that means to us)brings to us? (and that does imply some faith)?
Peace to my friends,
Darryl
Well, that is much more than a
you are so right,i remember those days, when soupy sales show, groucho marx ,and harpo and zippo marx, and the tree stooges, alot may have been reruns for me because i’m only 54 but even watching walace and ladmo helped me forget my problems of me having epilipsy, and my mom and dad getting divorsed, the laughter they brought helped alot and was a godsend ,now they are gone , and the studios are trying to recreate them but it to me won’t be the same just like if they ever bought back a remake of chico and the man who would play the man and chico or bring back a remake of sanford and son just think whom would play sanford obama and his son the vise president it wont be the same every thing would be messed up i wish they would just run the reruns they are just as good
I love the way you write. Genuinely. If I had a newspaper, I’d give you a daily column. Were you suggesting a Sanford and Son remake with Obama and Biden? I love it.
Right, I get it. Obama and his son, the Vice President.
I agree 100% as a matter of fact where I live in Indiana every Sunday morning they have reruns of the 3 stooges for like 2-3 hours and I faithfully watch them just as I did when I was a kid and I’m 57 years old now. The same apply’s with cartoons they still show Bugs Bunny, Road Runner,Tom & Jerry and a few others to this day and our kids watch them just as I enjoy watching them all over again with them. There are things from the past you can never forget that you keep in your heart and even tell your kids about different things you used to watch and do when you where a child, and those memories no-one can ever take away from you.
Sean Penn would be the perfect person for yhis role. He looks and acts like him!!!
my bf Wanta to be a star and MOE in the movie
leave the three stooges alone…. they were in a class by themselves. everytime someone decided to make a movie about old school shows or group, it just isn’t the same!!!!!!
Steve…I am with you…i am in late 50s and think that no one could replace the 3 stooges..and think the same way with Jerry Lewis. These guys were in a class all by themselves and I appreciate what they did to help a kids get his mind off the difficulties of the time. What a memory!
the fab three,{moe, shemp, curly, larry, joe besser, joe derita}all six are three of a kind, the world will never see likes of again.I am 44yrs young and raised 3 children on “the guys”. “THE LAFFING NEVER STOPS”THE FARRELLY BROS,WILL ONLY INCREASE IT!!!!!!! PETE/BOB THANK YOU!!!
I think you need someone with a similar face to moe, I suggest Charlie Sheen, he is an avid actor and I think he could do it.
Woody Harerlson should play Larry in Three Stooges.
Sean Hayes is an amazing actor. He will be a great Curly, what are you people talking about. Really good and really funny, he has great comidic skills which is what you need to be curly…. I vote for you Sean Hayes
Hey mike you forgot one fact. The three stooges abc movie was the second highest made for TV movie of the year on any network when ABC released it.
The Three Stooges (originals) will never be relegated to the dustbin of history, ever. They’re brand of comedy will always be fresh and funny to new audiences I believe, as long as networks are still willing to show the films.
NOBODY will ever come close to the Stooges. This is wrong in every way and will underscore just how original they were and how what they did might have looked easy…but cannot be duplicated especially by these directors….IMO!
Yer darn tootin’! Don’t go-a-messin’ with anything old or black and white! If these lazy kids today can’t go seek out quality depression-era comedy then they don’t deserve to laugh ever! So stop remaking anything I like… and get off my lawn!!!
Grandpa..your comment hit the nail right on the head…or should I say stooges style…the mallet right on the head.
Amen,
brother!
I think the glass closet just opened up a little.
The Stooges as female? Oh yeah, and I wanna see John Malkovich, Sean Astin and Shaq cast in the next installment of Charlie’s Angels.
Nono, akaison was referencing Sean Hayes being gay and the lack of roles available to openly gay actors (in a way that seemed a little bit homophobic, but maybe I’m reading it wrong).
I guess you, Krejaton, misinterpreted the message, and the way you leapt to attack it was amazing. Did you think three women were being hired to play the Stooges? And you seemed so angry about it. Wonderful. Did you read the article?
ZebedeeDooDah, I did not think Krejaton sounded angry at all. I’m not sure you are right about what akaison’s intent was. And you saying how Krejaton “leap to attack it” … the post was 22 hours later, for pete’s sake.
To quote Larry who said this many times, this place reminds me of the reform school. Note to the Farrellys, you need to use that line in the movie, whenever they went someplace big and intimidating it reminded Larry of reform school. He also needs to be shown playing the violin at some point with great skill.
is this gonna be a lifetime movie?
Sam Raimi as Moe. Hands down, buddy.
Sam Raimi is always a SHEMP, not a MOE.
Great article, Mike. It’s nice to get good insight on projects that don’t happen overnight, and Sean Hayes seems like the perfect energy to help push this through.
just what i was going to write
Nice to see Hayes’ comedy talent remembered and utilized. He played Jack so well because of timing and talent and any other insight was just helpful resources.
I’d have pegged him more for Mo (no pun intended) but it’s an interesting ensemble so far.
I think this is an ideal casting move for The Stooges. What better than a true physical comedian with serious acting chops! I only hope they stay in the same vein while securing a Moe. I, for one, am excited to see what they plan to do on this film and think if anyone can pull this off it’s the Farrellys.
The problem is every person in America over the age of 3 knows what the 3 Stooges look and sound like having seen them on TV since forever.
This is something that could be well-written and directed that movie-goers might really want to watch on TV. Given pictures to identify, most people, I believe, could identify them over most celebrities except Charlie Sheen. Many movies like the remakes of ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ and ‘The Brady Bunch’ Movie actually rely on you knowing what the characters look like. This is not the case here.
Maybe this will be as good as James Brolin playing Clark Gable in ‘Gable and Lombard’… maybe.
Great casting and great article Mike. I don’t know why there seems to be so much backlash when it comes to this film. What’s the hang up? We have first, second and third generations of Stooge fans that will be filling the theaters to see the finished product and, in the hands of the Farrellys, undoubtedly a new generation of Stooge fans in the making.
Hasn’t it been in development hell for over a decade? Back when the Farrellys were still relevant?
Never thought of Sean Hayes but I’m liking it. With Sasso and Hayes on board, Stooges is shaping up to be a must see next summer.
You’re kidding, right? This project went from A-grade cast possibilities down to Will Sasso and Sean Hayes? And it’s not even a TV movie?
Hardly a “must see”.
Wow. I hope that’s sarcasm, Jonny. If not, do you work for the production company or studio?
Interesting choice but he can do anything.
i was born in the 80′s and i’ve never laughed at the three stooges. i don’t think audiences have matured because jackass is still popular….but i don’t know anyone my age that thinks the stooges are funny or relevant in anyway. i can’t see how this will turn out well.
That’s because your generation is full of soulless, mindless idiots.
Hey, I resemble that remark!
Soitenly!
C’mon the Stooges antics are timeless.I take it you don’t like slapstick comedy.Who do you laugh at these days.
I really don’t worry too much about what the 20-somethings have to say about anything. And I’m only born in the 70′s, but there are way more mindless morons that don’t think anything is funny unless it includes fart jokes from the 80′s.
I agree. I was born in the 80s, but what I’ve noticed recently are my peer group pulling a boomerang and starting to re-appreciate the stuff (like ‘Stooges’) we used to watch reruns of as kids.
Those 90s-born idiots, though? Soulless to the core. Like vacant-eyed, over-medicated, joyless consumer Children Of The Corn.
im 52 the stooges were funny in r day but stupid to, my kidds did not care for that tipe of comidy, but that does not make them souless, and or stupid.im sure there r many things u dont care for that younger people do and vice verca, and unless you watched childern of the corn how could you possible know what it was about to base your apinyon on someone for not likeing a tv show. just a little harsh u think.yes i know i cant spell, but im sure u get the message, if you r that mean over a tv show i feel for you and your friends, if u have any that is, try not to be so hard on others because of their opion.you know the saying we all have one.
OK LITTLE CHILD!! My daughter who was born in 1996 knows & laughs at the stooges all the time. I was born in 1977 and I love the STOOGES they are the funniest group ever!!! If you dont think thats funny then you obviously DO NOT have a sense of humor!!! That is whats wrong with the world today all the good shows are gone and put on with the stupid crap that we watch today!! And we wonder why our world around us is SHIT!!! TV shows have become just about sex and homosexuality and this is what we want our kids to watch!!!
love the casting! loved sean in W&G, by far he and megan were the stars of that…i mean, c’mon, who didn’t laugh their ass off at “just jack”
Rob Schneider was unavailable?
That made me laugh. Schneider as Larry, Kevin James as Curly, and Adam Sandler as Moe.
You can doooooooo it
The problem with these three actors is that they want to keep the budget below 30 million to make a great profit. It wouldn’t happen with Adam Sandler and Kevin James. I think they’re very funny, but not stooges funny.
The problem, Mike, is that the effort to just “re-do” a series of faux-Stooges shorts feels just like that– fake. I’ve read multiple drafts of the script, and it’s just not that funny. There’s a lot of inappropriate toilet humor, stuff that sticks out like a sore thumb (and this is from someone who likes the Farrelly Brothers). It’s going to come off like the 1991 misfire BRAIN DONORS with John Turturro, which tried to ape the Marx brothers. The biopic based on your excellent book should have been the last word. This is just going to feel desperate. The only good thing that’s come out of the renewed interest in the Stooges is Sony’s fantastic restoration and chronological DVD compilations of ALL the Stooges shorts. I was a little interested in the Sean Penn/Jim Carrey/Benicio Del Toro iteration just because of the novelty factor, but this doesn’t excite me at all. And I am a HUGE Stooge fan.
PS – The best-named book about the Stooges? THE LAST OF THE MOE HAIRCUTS.
I don’t know, I think “Brain Donors” is a minor classic. I tell anyone who will listen to check it out. If this movie at all is to “The Three Stooges” what that movie was to “A Night at the Opera,” I’ll be thrilled.
It will be interesting to see if they can live up to the legacy of the original Three Stooges shorts. I’m just glad Antenna TV is showing the originals again on Friday, Saturdays & Sundays!
I admire the attempt to replicate the Stooges but it would be like trying to replicate Laurel and Hardy. It just can’t be done well enough to satisfy us old timers who remember the real thing. But I’ll try to keep an open mind.
Anyone else notice that the two stars cast so far both are co-stars in Kohan/Mutchnick sitcoms? Hayes from W&G and Sasso from $h*! My Dad Says. Just sayin’.
This may sound a trifle trite, and I really don’t mean it to sound that way, but the Farrellys (Is it really spelled that way? Odd.)for all their “passion” cannot equal the likes of not only the Three Stooges, but people like Emil Sitka , Clyde Bruckman, Elwood Ullman and so many others.
That’s a big part of the understanding that is missing today.
The Three stooges were talented, but they never performed in a vacuum. It was the writers, directors, and most of all, the supporting cast, Like Vernon Dent and so many others. Forget about Moe for the moment. I wanna know who they cast as Christine McIntyre and Emil Sitka.
The point I’m making is that for all the film wasted trying to imitate them, the *chemistry* that was there is missing. You could get De Niro, Pachino, and Jack Nicholson (who can write better than anyone on the production, by the way) to play the boys, but without the chemistry, it would be nothing but a waste of production space. Which is what this fiasco is going to be as well. I’m not going to drop the price of a ticket on this turkey. I’ll just stay home and watch the originals, rather than some half-baked post modern imitations of them.
Roci, totally agree with your comment. The “chemistry” of the Stooges with other actors and the great writing can’t be duplicated in today’s Hollywood.
Hollywood, leave the Stooges alone, they are perfect just as they are and they were brillant and orginal.
I don’t care what actors you get to play the Stooges, you’ll never capture that magic they had together.
Just like the Beatles, the Four were great togeher and you could try to replace one or two of them, but it just wouldn’t have that magical chemistry, John, Paul, George and Ringo had.
For Moe: Joe Rogan? Ben Stiller? Even, Bruce Willis. Good luck getting any of them, though.
now simon helberg from the big bang on cbs is a much better choice then hayes..helberg has the right comedic attitude to play larry and physically built about the same..dont get me wrong hayes is very very talented but my choice is helberg..
What happened to Hank Azeria as Moe? Last I heard that was set. No longer?
Sad that James Marsden didn’t get it. He so talented, especially at comedy, but his looks constantly hold him back.
agreed! They’d need major prosthetics to muck his gorgeous face up enough. So talented, but way too attractive for the part.
