Sony Animation has picked up Instant Karma, a live action/CGI project previously at New Line. Paul Hernandez wrote the script and will direct. The plot: a misguided safecracker from New Orleans survives a near-death experience only to find himself reincarnated as a fly. He needs to perform good deeds to up his karma rating, and when he does, he moves up the flood chain by becoming such animals as a frog, raccoon and dog. His goal is to redeem himself enough to reclaim his human body and the woman he loves. Shrek and Pirates of the Caribbean scribe Terry Rossio has boarded the project as producer.

This project has been kicking around since Digital Domain had it 10+ years ago.
Well, that took eight years. This was once a Digital Domain production with Pre-”Dwayne” The Rock as the safecracker.

Well, it’s great to see that Paul will finally have the chance to make his film (with Terry Rossio attached) after getting so close, but never greenlit by New Line. However, with SPA picking up the rights, it will likely have an animated look and feel — rather than being photoreal, which is the path it was on at Digital Domain.
As @Hacky Hackerson highlights below, it will be interesting to see whether SPA (and those involved) will let the film portray actual death (since it’s going to be animated, rather than photoreal, at a Japanese, rather than American, owned studio) — or simply “near death” — between the various incarnations.
Congrats to Paul and Terry!
Wow, I was pitched and probably read this script 6 years ago at least…Congrats!
Terry Rossio made this one happen. Paul is a friend of his and Terry’s a good enough guy that he never gave up on this script and finally now after 10+ years it’s getting made. This business could use more guys like Terry.
So true! Terry is someone who loves creative energy, and when he attaches himself to a project, he throws himself into it. We DO need more like him in Hollywood!
There’s nothing more interesting to kids than movies about karma and reincarnation. Kudos to the new SPA management, I smell another “Open Season” level success!
Maybe SPA is trying to stand out in the crowd by producing adult-oriented movies.
Yeah, that’s it. Good call. Because adults LOVE adult-oriented animation, like “The Illusionist” or “My Dog Tulip”. Box office GOLD!
Both those movies got small releases and good reviews.
Haha I don’t know if you’re being funny *intentionally*, ILDC.
ILDC,
When I read this, I laughed so hard I Smurfed a little in my pants. At least they aren’t making a talking bird migration movie.
Reincarnation is a central tenet within the majority of Indian religious traditions, such as Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism; the Buddhist concept of rebirth is the same.
My point:
Since Christian family audiences are the backbone of the domestic success for most animated films, if this one gets made “shoving that blasphemy down their throats”, the Moral Majority types will be picketing the theaters.
Good luck with that.
Oh, and I originally heard this pitch Pre-9/11.
“survives a near-death experience only to find himself reincarnated”
If the movie is going to start out with that kind of contradiction I’m out.
Does the film get reincarnated as a turkey?
only if terry rossio “produces” it.
With this director it can’t miss.
This is great news. I worked with Paul years ago and it couldn’t happen to a better human. He’s also immensely talented. Terry’s a good guy too.
So what’s this then, a compensation to a couple of guys for being good guys? You know it doesn’t take a genius to see this film has no appeal for kids, and possibly very little appeal for adults.
You’re right. Big releases and big P&A budgets will put adult oriented animated films over the top, just like…wait, I know…hmm, just like — well dammit, I guess just like nothing before it. So SPA has just discovered a whole new market that no one else (besides you), has ever thought of or considered before. Such a clever guy. I stand corrected.
