In a 7-figure deal, Sony Pictures has acquired an untitled royal wedding-themed pitch by (500) Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber that will be produced by former production president Matt Tolmach. Pitch, about a girl from the Midwest who goes to the UK and winds up marrying a prince, is described as Notting Hill meets Meet the Royal Parents. Sale was brokered by CAA and Kaplan/Perrone.

Good for the writers. But seriously Uuugggghhh for that film if it’s greenlit. Is there an audience for sappy stuff like this? Look at the recent flops that starred J-Lo, Jennifer Anister, etc.
I was expecting more from these guys after 500 days. But then again, when you re-visit that movie it’s like watching a long music video.
Um… Wasn’t this movie made a few years ago starring Julia Styles?
yes. but this one will be completely different. This one will be told out of order.
rack ‘em
Yes, and it was GREAT! Fairy tales aren’t just for little girls… some of us big girls enjoy an implausible romance every once in a while too.
And the score will be by? Yawni
oh god, another example of hollywood networking and connections paying off. Jesus Christ, is there ever a writer deal that isn’t based on connections? That question is rhetorical, of course the answer is “No, not for years.”
While connections and who your agent is has always mattered everything is so crony-ish now it’s insane. And Hollywood is paying a steep price for this mindset in lost millions at the box office.
While this pitch sounds soft in logline form your rant is misplaced – by which I mean you are partly right but your post doesn’t belong on this specific article. These guys wrote a critical and commercial success so what’s your problem with this sale?
Not sure about those lost millions – what’s the logline to your query?
Yes, it was called the prince and me, she was from wisconsin and i think he was a danish prince. I heard all three people that saw it, enjoyed it moderately. This turd will not get made
Already remaking Amanda Bynes films… EXCELLENT!!!!
(500) Days Of Summer is one of my favorite films, but this does NOT sound interesting. Then again, (500) also sounded like a typical rom-com. Then again, a lot of what made it so beautiful and differen was the directing.
I could not heart those guys anymore than I do…I am SO
seeing that movie.
I know, right? “Pink Panther 2″ was the BOMB!
How about making this big budget with big names? Could be hot.
Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. Lame. And did I mention it’s lame.
Yeah, this will be really relevant when it gets released two years after the only royal wedding that people are actually aware of.
This is a great idea. The kind of idea we all *almost* had. And no, it’s not as derivative as it sounds. In THE PRINCE AND ME, Wisconsin student Julia Stiles’ character falls for a visiting exchange student who just happens to be a Danish Prince. In NOTTING HILL, Hugh Grant’s humble, everyman character meets an American superstar actress visiting the little town of Notting Hill, and sparks fly.
The reason this idea is so good, and such a stealth idea we all should have come up with, is that it’s got an ingenuous midwestern girl visiting the UK and coming away with a prince, to the eternal dismay of every Royal Chaser in Europe. It’s every young girl’s secret fantasy.
Their agents were especially keen in taking it out the week of the Royal Wedding, so props to them. I’m not much of an insider at all, so I’m a bit puzzled by the nepotism remarks. Just how is this sale nepotism?
All you sour grapes and haterz — you wouldn’t know a good idea if it crawled up your ass and chewed off your balls.
No, I know that if I, an unknown, wrote this, it would be completely trashed as cliche and too commercially pandering. But, industry mandated “talent” writes it, then it’s a brilliant idea. I assure you there are a million prince/princess and pauper stories out there, it’s just they get dumped because the right talent didn’t present it.
If you have the capacity, try reading the book Sway. It tells you everything you need to know about why the label of brilliance the creative arena is totally subjective.
Wah! Wah! Wah!! Oh, poor, poor, anonymous me!
Neustadter and Weber were unknowns at one time, too. But they wrote a clever script, probably exhausted all their contacts and found someone to read it who probably loved it, got themselves representation, and then, maybe a year or two later, 500 Days of Summer was made. Probably not in that order or with as many steps, but they put in the hard work of getting out of the bullpen to begin with and now their careers are soaring.
Half the work of getting a screenwriting career off the ground is in getting read and finding representation. The more connected the better. But I don’t recall Neustadter or Weber ever having “Royal” Hollywood connections.
As for the veracity of their latest idea — yes, I think if you had come up with this idea, nursed it, thought up all the fresh, clever twists you could think of, then gotten in the room to pitch it, it would have sold. If you made a sour face at “and gotten in the room to pitch it,” hey, that’s half the work. But a great idea travels well.
And remember, the other half of the description was “Meet The Royal Parents.” So I’m sure there were a lot of visual gags involving the bride-to-be’s genteel, midwestern mom and dad visiting the Royal Palace and mixing with the stately king and queen, with lowest common denominator guffaws to follow.
Come up with a great idea, then find someone to get you in the room. A lot harder than it sounds, but you don’t have to be Hollywood Royalty to pull it off.
The fact that they were once unknowns doesn’t diminish the fact that this story has been told a million times and in various forms and would not be acceptable from an unknown, unestablished writer.
And, most importantly, it doesn’t diminish the fact it has no appeal for anyone aside from a prebuscent female. I recognize that this demographic is a huge revenue generator – so, it has the potential to garner big bucks, but it also could sink like Maid to Order and other such dreck.
Another example of the entertainment industry fostering “fresh” ideas. Let’s see, commoner marries prince, very unique and so unlike that seminal, never been retold masterpiece Cinderella. Perhaps, there will be a Jane Austen angle, making the rehash totally complete.
LOL. You guys are hilarious….this is exactly a combo of both ‘Reboot’ and ‘Skidz’ comments: Its The Prince and Me meets What a Girl Wants…..
At least it’s not a remake of “Royal Wedding”. Not yet anyways.
These guys are incredibly talented writers and good people and they deserve this kind of success. It’s too bad people have to come on this website and rain on their parade. Congratulations to Neustadter and Weber, and congrats to Tolmach and Sony on a great new project. The guys will surely hit it out of the park.
500 days of summer is a terrible script. what a huge waste of money. i mean it literally ends with a new girl saying my name is autumn. COME ON!!!
Don’t blame these guys just because they were able to sell a piece of shit idea. Good for them. We’ve all had piece of shit ideas we wish someone would’ve paid us seven figures for.
I so want to hate on this remake of two already certifiably bad movies (neither of which, in all fairness, have I seen), but since I loved 500 Days of Summer so much I’ll assume this isn’t as HORRIBLE as it sounds.
Hopefully a bigger success than their yet-to-be-seen sitcom “Friends with Benefits.”
I want to like these guys. I think they have talent. I’m sure they have a cool spin. My problem with them is the braggy stuff. I know you have to promote yourselves in this age but during awards season I kept reading quotes from them like WE REINVENTED THE ROMANTIC COMEDY!! and dissing movies like The Proposal. I’m all for deconstruction and such but I don’t think filmmakers should openly rag on other people’s movies.
I’ve seen their pilot. Has every romantic comedy cliche in the book. Just drek. Karma’s a bitch.
Sony does realize people won’t be quite as excited about a royal wedding two years from now as they are this week, right?
The truth is, even if you got in the room to pitch this the chances of selling it are very slim. Most of the reason this sold and at a very good price is because these guys are hot. They wrote a very good (but not great) script lucked out with a director who totally nailed it and now people are dying to work with them. And that’s how things work here.
Are they serious with that picture? Maybe the rich deal will afford them a new photographer.
