The Hub, Hasbro’s joint-venture kids network with Discovery Communications that launched in October, didn’t do much for the toymaker’s first-quarter earnings announced today. Although Q1 is usually a slow time for toys as it comes after the holidays, the company missed Wall Street expectations as it reported its net income fell 71%, from $58.9 million a year ago to $17.2 million. Costs related to launching The Hub were cited as part of the dragging-down. The bright side is that Hasbro has a slew of toys tied to summer tentpole movies like Marvel properties Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which are expected to goose revenue for the full year.

The Hub is a terrible channel and will fail like 4Kids recently did. I give it one more year, then Hasbro will look to sell.
I am biased, I know people who work there, I am even writing an episode for one of their shows… THAT ASIDE– as a Dad, and someone who consumes lots of kids animation–I really think The Hub KICKS ASS. They are doing so much so right.
John Fogelman should cover the debt. After all, this is “his” baby.

Exactly. Quite a legacy, John.
The HUB is awesome! GI JOE and Transformers back to back weeknights, The Wonder Years, Barney Stinson, MD…
Oh c’on. G.I Joe and Transformers are the worst cartoons I’ve ever seen. You can tell its all a bunch of crap that they rushed into production just so they can sell toys. I was excited for that channel then disappointment kicked when I realized the whole chanel is just one giant infomercial. Check out BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD on cartoon network if you want good shit.
Ouch… what a terrible proposition this was from the start. Marketplace is waaaaaay too crowded.
Dan Vs. is awesome!
Any network that shows the 1966 Batman deserves a place on the dial.
At least Discovery Kids covered a niche. Some of the shows are still awesome though.
I agree that the Hub is an awesome channel and is doing a lot of things right. I think their problem right now is that their schedule is a bit manic. They play some great shows but need to block it up a bit. Does it really make sense to have the 60′s Batman show be followed by the 80s Transformers cartoon? At midnight no less? They should take a page from the Nick at Nite formula. I really do hope the channel lasts, and I say that as a 28 year old with no kids.
Also, more MLP reruns.
how is this even news?!? Lol, Hub has been saying this entire time that the first few years on this venture would be a loss. Everyone know launching a new channel is at least a 5 to 7 year pay off. Duh – you have to put money in to make more money.
