Current and former stars of ABC’s All My Children and One Life To Live are mourning the demise of the long-running soaps. “It saddens me that All My Children is canceled,” the series’ signature star Susan Lucci tweeted. “I’ve loved playing Erica Kane and working with (creator) Agnes Nixon & the incredible people at AMC.”
“This is like losing a member of your family,” said Kelly Ripa who spent 12 years on the daytime drama where she also met her husband, AMC co-star Mark Consuelos. All My Children was more than a job.– it was my family. It was there that I met my husband; it was there when my first two children were born; it was there where I met many of my life-long friends. It was the greatest training ground ever. I feel heart sick.” Other famous AMC alums include Josh Duhamel, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Melissa Leo, Christian Slater and Amanda Seyfried.
“A moment of silence for a disappearing genre,” former One Love to Live co-star Nathan Fillion tweeted. “OLTL & AMC, we’ll miss your hard work and talent.” Other popular actors to come out of OLTL include Ryan Phillippe, Marcia Cross, Tommy Lee Jones and Judith Light.

Yawn… this was supposed to happen several decades ago.
Fuck you, Ethan, and your snotty callous reaction to earnest people…
Oh well, at least those of us who crave crummy acting, TERRIBLE writing, and HORRIBLE story lines still have REALITY TV to entertain us….
With all due respect George, you have to look at it from the amount of product they put out. I would argue that most people who turn their noses up at daytime dramas would not be able last a week working on a soap opera (try 264 shows per year, 47 minutes of television a day, 70 pages of dialogue written in less than a week, frequently in only one take).
Major films and prime time series that have higher budgets and much more time and still don’t always make the bar.
Daytime is the most challenging aspect of our business, essentially one of the last bastions of regular upper-middle class living in the industry. It is for people who really like to work, day in and day out. Overall, they do an darn good job.
I have watched these soaps for 41yrs in labor with both of my sons
who are 13yrs apart while watching AMC.
When you see actors come and go and even die in real life it hurts.
I still don’t understand why ABC would think people want change.
Between 1 & 3 ABC will NOT be on my tv and after Oprah leaves
I’m happy to say I will watch OWN.
If it isn’t making money then it’s gots to go! I’m sure the next daytime emmy’s will make sure Lucci will win…
Ripa almost seemed sincere until her “training ground” comment. Honey, if it’s that simple, then why did it take you 12 YEARS to master it. When the majority of the shows were based in New York, they used to be populated with really good character actors, who were often in theater on the side. That definitely changed in the 1990s and went downhill. Hey, things change. Oh, and Kelly, just remember you were a recast for KLG. LOL
Looks like all the alcoholic, divorce Beverly Hills mothers who live off their ex-husbands need to find something to do during the day.
TV Soaps are a 1950′s invention to sell soap, a hold over from the glory days of radio, they have little place in 21st century media. Good decision by ABC/Disney
Really you sure don’t know what you are talking about everything is not always internet and texting. sometimes you need to remember what television is for. not everything has to be a reality show bullshit,
you are an idiot, everything is not always internet and texting people are out of work, what if it was you. you are an idiot
Get a life stop trying to be cool know facts before writing nonsense
I am gutted! I’ve been watching these shows for 40 years. I bought Tivo so that I could record them to watch at night. Life long fan– very sad to see these shows disappear only to be replaced by more annoying lifestyle shows + product-pushing talking heads. The writing was so clever and even tho ridiculous scenarios at times, always, always entertaining. This is a disaster!
yeah a disaster. now you have to get a life!
I take it that you’re recommending Olivia should replace her beloved ‘stories’ with another alternative? Perhaps, she could follow your lead and devote her new found available time to being an amateur internet troll?
Good post
I agree with you Olivia, The younger generation just don’t get it. Always the need for instant gratification!
I agree wholeheatedly with all the viewers that has spoken out about the cancelation of ALL MY CHILDREN AND ONE LIFE TO LIVE. We don’t need any more food or reality shows. I have been wathing these soaps since 1989 when I moved back to Alabama. I think it is a disgrace to cancel these 2 soaps. Like one person said, there is no baby alive to watch tv at 3 in the morning. I am a faithful and loyal viewer of these soaps and I won’t watch ABC for anything else. Please reconsider about canceling these soaps. I don’t like MODERN FAMILY , it is STUPID and so are all the others that are suppose to be funny. If you want something funny, then do reruns of AMOS AND ANDY or something else like that , THE REAL MC COYS. I know there are alot of AMC-OLTL viewers that are very upset about this and you ABC are making a HUGE mistake, after all we, the viewers are what pays your salaries by watching these soaps on ABC.
I am in agreement with you 100% all the way
These shows did 250 episodes per year, scripted, acted, and produced by people who made television enjoyable.
What will they be replaced with, Judge Somebody?
Another Jerry Spring-like festival of dysfunction?
One more grinning talk show host interviewing the same B-list celebrities?
Or more paid programming infomercials showing us gadgets and dubious diet products?
I love OLTL – seriously, anyone who works in this industry who watches this show everyday will see that there is some amazing story telling there. The challenge to put on original content every weekday for years and should be commended.
What makes this worse is the decision to replace it with food and lifestyle shows. Seriously? How sad that the Network would replace these traditional shows that have lasted years with programming that has already been mastered by 8 different cable channels for the last 10 years.
Its not just the end of an era for soaps – its the beginning of the end for the networks. Clearly there is no vision and no creativity to sustain these behemoths and they will crumble. NBC is already on its way, this decision from ABC is the next step.
I haven’t watched AMC for (gulp) 30 years but it’s sad to see it go.
And, there’s nothing sadder than a snob…soaps have been entertaining people for decades, and not just working class housewives in curlers. It was an art form, albeit a fairly low brow one, but you could say the same for a dozen different popular entertainments. Doesn’t make it any less valid.
Not to mention it’s been both a training ground for thousands of actors, and provided good steady paychecks for those actors and thousands of crew members. The New York based soaps had dozens of theater actors in their casts who made good money during the day, and got to perform on stage at night.
Eventually, all scripted television is going to die because “it isn’t making money”. Looking forward to my “golden years” and 24 hours of reality tv and talk shows…
I’m so sad to hear this tragic news ANCE sucks . I pray for all these stars to get fab jobs that we may see them again or on other soaps. I love each and everyone of you. You have made me so happy and complete. You are my family . Please don’t give up ..acting careers I wanna see you all on tv soon with all my love .
Ditto same from me
Daytime Soaps brought familiar characters into the home each day. Funny how ABC can look at this medium as a “dying” breed when the telenovelas are making Univision the top network in many major markets. AMC should have stayed in N.Y.retained the writing and storylines that had it’s ratings at 36% higher than before moving to California. The real question is if ABC can retain the viewership in those time slots with a different kind of show that is avialable on many other networks. Daytime Soaps are not training gounds, they are a medium that provides a definate niche in programming to a large viewership. CBS and NBC were delighted with this move.
I grew up watching these shows with my parents. I say parents because my dad loved the show. He worked 12-14 hours a day on the farm in the summer and mom recorded it for him to watch after the 10pm news. This was from before I was born until I left the house almost 15 years ago. Though I haven’t watched it in years, (hard to follow when only a small number of characters I remember) this is a sad day to see those shows go. I remember having my first celebrity crush to Joey Buchanan (Fillion) when I was 17. I’ll miss the storylines to both shows as these were the only ones we watched. When so many things have changed, the soaps were there. It is truly a sad day to see this change. I understand the reason but I don’t have to like the change. And I still won’t watch the crap they think I’ll like better.
SO these shows had good run. Grant it Brian Frons is an idiot an is about talented as a piece of Chalk. However you never here of night time actors running around like chickens when they ar elet go from a show tweeting and screaming I was fired or my show was cancelled. Unfortunately they were cancelled. And although it sounds cold Susan Lucci took it in Stride. She has played the part for 42 Years almost and had said she has enjoyed her time playing the part and looks forward to new and exciting opportunities.
Moving on……
This is a very sad day for me I loved watching AMC OLTL same as evening shows, the scums that are glad these two shows are leaving, must not have a life, all they can do is read these messages and be negitive YOU GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!
Thank you to everyone in front of and behind the scenes on both shows for entertaining me for 40 + years I love you all!!!
BJB
What awful responses. I can only imagine they are very unhappy people in real life. I doubt those who mock the genre of daytime serials have much HIGH ART in their own lives. These “Stories” have been the first tv shows to bring – abortion, inter-racial romance, gay issues, breast cancer and mental illness , into peoples homes and demystify scary social issues for 4 generations of people. Every book printed need not be “David Copperfield” and every tv show made doesn’t have to be “good for us and high brow”.
I’m sad about AMC leaving only because at times in my life it was part of great times. Losing AMC is like re-losing those times in my life. It make me think of my grandma and my great aunt who took such delight in watching Erica Kane. They are both dead and in a way I lost them again when I heard the CNX news.
On another note, I feel so bad for the hundreds and hundreds of crew, actors and casting teams that are without jobs.
Why on earth would people who just want to snipe and say mean stuff be on “Deadline”. Go troll Perez and Dlisted. You’ll be more in your element in the “lower thinking blogs”.
This is not only the end of an era, but changes the landscape of television forever. Also, don’t forget the estimated 600 to 700 people on both shows that will lose there jobs, maybe never to be replaced. Not to mention all the ancilliary business associated with soap operas that will suffer. This is very very bad news that has wide ramifications in our culture. We are watching the demise of scripted television in our lifetime.
I heart one life to live. So sad they won’t be able to tell their stories anymore. The acting gets a bad rapp but has been superb at times and to be all taken away for food and talk shows is a bad move. There are while networks dedicated to that already. I feel bad for all those people out of a job.
“The Chew”? That sounds like a monster. It won’t get better ratings than AMC, just like “The Talk” doesn’t get better ratings than the soap opera it replaced, “As the World Turns”. It’s just cheaper to produce. The nets are just giving up on daytime, and throwing in the towel and putting on cheap programming. Pretty soon it will just be payed time slots with those half-hour ads for rip-off products that don’t work.
This is what happens when Wall Street and shareholders own your entertainment. They ONLY look at the bottom line. That’s it.
Wow – I’m not a soap watcher myself but I see no need to be cruel about a bunch of people losing their jobs. Ultimately this will be better for the networks’ bottom line, but I think the fabric of American culture (such that it is) will be a little weaker for it.
No one cares how “hard” these soap people work…Trashmen work hard, and don’t make half the money a soap actor does!! Some of you people need to get off your couches and LIVE YOUR LIFE. This is just a business move, pure and simple. Get over it. The soap actors/crew will be fine…I’m sure they have a VERY advanced skill set to fall back on…oh wait..shit.
I am so upset over this. How could you ABC? What in the world are you thinking? I have watched AMC since the beginning and I have loved every episode and look forward to the next. Contrary to popular belief, there are those who watch soaps that have a brain and a life. I am retired now, but when I worked, I always recorded AMC and watched it later. I watched Susan Lucci grow up – hell we grew up together. In all the years that I have watched this soap, I have thoroughly enjoyed it; I’ve laughed, cried, and cheered for the cast. It is a SAD DAY indeed!!!! And the shows planned to move into this slot, well good luck ABC. I wonder if you will even have close to 2.5 million viewers a day for the new shows.
God Bless each and every member of the cast, writers, producers, directors and staff of AMC. I am going to miss this soap so much and all the actors and “charactors” that I have come to know and love. mj
I am at a loss of words. I will NOT be watching the new shows. They do not interest me at all. I want One Life to Live and All My Children to stay. If I wanted to watch a program about eating I would go to the food network and if I wanted to watch loosing weight or anything like that I would watch the Biggest Looser and shows like that. Leave our soap operas alone. Some of us watch them religiously and me personally I have watched them since I was in diapers. Recording them when I was not at home. Come on now… Gimme a break.
If OLTL is not saved, just consider the Soap Opera officially dead. GH and DOOL will go next, undoubtedly. Then YR and BB will be the last to go – likely at the same time. Brian Frons will have single-handedly eradicated an American institution – for reasons NOT GOOD ENOUGH. How foolish? How sad? And as Robin Strasser describes his genius maneuver: “…a cavalier and utterly irresponsible decision.” SAVE OLTL !
