Kate Bulkley is covering MIPTV at Cannes for Deadline.
Beloved British series Torchwood is getting an American makeover in its upcoming fourth season, which will premiere on Starz on July 8. The season, titled Miracle Day, is being largely shot in the US on a much bigger budget. How much bigger? BBC Worldwide Prods. SVP Julie Gardner says the budgets for the new 10-part season is triple what it was when the series was shot in the UK. She is at MIPTV promoting the series with stars John Barrowman and Bill Pullman.
“There is so much more we can do with Torchwood now having made the leap
to America. It’s going to be even bigger and better,” said original Torchwood star and Glaswegian-born Barrowman, aka Captain Jack Harkness. “And,” he added with a chuckle, “for me on a personal level the move to America has been fucking amazing.” The budgets are bigger, the stunts are more dangerous and the sexual chemistry is more explosive, he said, pointing to the opening scene in Season 4, which involves a helicopter. “If we were in Wales shooting, we might not have had that, or we would have had to re-write the sequence.” Overall, “the audience is going to need a forklift truck to pick their jaws off the ground. The stunt work is unbelievable. I used to do quite a lot of stunts except if it was jumping off of buildings but now I’m not allowed to because of the insurance policy. I’m much more valuable in America!”
Among the tweaks on the show, Captain Jack’s iconic RAF coat has been “re-booted” with a lighter weight material and a “slimmer cut.” According to Barrowman, the former was to account for LA’s hotter weather, while the latter was the decision of the designer, not him. Both Gardner and Barrowman said that the new series keeps the heart of the original, including what Barrowman called the “heavy moments of drama” up against humorous one-liners. He also said that the relationships between the characters go on as they always have but are even ramped up a few notches. And the notoriously bi-sexual tension? “Jack will have his little dabblings and the audience will get exactly what they want,” he said. “And I had a lot of fun doing it!” According to Barrowman, all but the 10th episode have been written by Russell T. Davies, who is in LA now working on the final script. Torchwood has been a popular cult show in its original British incarnation, but the move to the U.S. will push it to the next level, Barrowman says. “We’ve going to be bigger than cult, now it’s about world domination.”

russell t. davies writes torchwood (children of earth – I mean come on) with a healthy blend of pan-sexuality on Starz, with a few quid to spend?
I should f**king think so. This will do nicely.
Can you explain to me why after all the hair-raising but ultimately pointless shenanigans it took to finally get Capt. Jack in front of the Alien all he could do was shoot at it’s Bullet-Proof enclosure with a WWII revolver?
Kate, I cannot reveal my real identity without having to, you know, kill you etc. but I am so glad you’re writing for Deadline Hollywood now. Always thought you were many kinds of professionally awesome.
YAY!!!!!!!
Deal w/ it, repressed stuffed shirt Americans!
Deal with it? We bought it. The US co-production is the reason the show is back on the air. Your comment makes little sense. Furthermore, the US doesn’t have the market cornered on puritanical bigots. They’re everywhere (unfortunately).
However, I do concur with your “YAY!!!!!!!”
“We”? Do you own STARZ? Because if you do, I applaud your taste in content. If you don’t, considering how badly the original “Torchwood” bombed when it aired on the SCI FI channel in 2008 because the audience was turned off by Captain Jack’s pansexuality, STFU & consider the point well made.
Any other fans concerned about Bill Pullman’s inclusion? I have nothing against his films (Who doesn’t love SPACEBALLS?!), but Torchwood really hit it’s stride with Children of the Earth, perfectly balancing the humor, action, and drama. I just don’t think he can hit the emotional notes to make the constantly shifting tone genuine. There’s not a cast member who doesn’t get through every season without crying, and all I can remember of Pullman crying is an awkward covering-face-with-hands-but-no-tears for his wife’s death in Independence Day. Consider me… concerned.
Go watch “Zero Effect” to start to get up to speed on Pullman if you’re that out of the loop–follow that up with “Bottle Shock”,
“Surveillance”, “The Killer Inside Me” and “You Kill Me”. I’m guessing you missed Pullman on Broadway in “The Goat” and “Oleanna”.
Word from the “Torchwood:Miracle Day” set is that Pullman is “amazing” so get ready to be amazed.
Don’t forget The Last Seduction! He’s great with great material, so I think this bodes well.
Bill Pullman’s the bad guy, supposedly someone on death row who survives his execution because of the whole “no one can die” premise. His character is undoubtedly not going to be anyone with warm and fuzzy feelings, but will probably be some kind of psychopathic killer.
You’re kidding right?
Pullman is a major Upgrade to that cast!
Mr. Pullman did a fantastic job in “Igby Goes Down.” There were some really heavy scenes of him completely losing it and going over the edge that he pulled off magnificently. That, and “Zero Effect” have me with no worries at all about his inclusion in this cast.
The article implies Davies wrote all the scripts himself. Not true. I know for a fact that he brought in at least one America sci-fi writing heavy hitter.
Let’s hope it’s more like 2 or 3.
As far as I know, there are a FEW writers on it. I have a friend who is the Torchwood writing staff (she’s written mostly tv dramas)… my guess is that he wrote the initial storyline, and he has a staff there to flesh it out.
Of course , I was going to make a negative comment about how Brit Tv Shows remade in the States fall into the viewer abyss with most Americans either misunderstanding or not understanding the translation , and then it galantly jumping the shark . But my views have changed in the last decade . This is based on that understanding of American Shows being broad brush and British Shows being old world . This is still true , although I still find favor in both styles . I like American and British , because they are different . The difference now is that both are more professional , and American television is more mature . I think I will look forward to this new special Torchwood Season of a brilliant Series !!
But this isn’t a British TV show being remade as an American TV show. It’s a British TV show, written/run by the same people, being mostly filmed in America and shown initially on an American pay channel. It’s not like taking the John Cleese “Fawlty Towers” and making the horrendous Bea Arthur “Fawlty Towers”. Ewwww…shivers just thinking about that train wreck.
I can not get enough of Torchwood and this will have to be my Summer treat to me! BBCA has taken it out of the daily Sy-Fy lineup each week day and I am missing it today. Sexual dabblings, bigger stunts and lotsa moolah…sounds like a good time to me. I really am looking forward to this. Thanks Starz…gotta love a network with some guts.
Well this sounds promising. I like that Bill Pullman was added to the cast. I am glad to hear this will stay sexy. I am tired of uptight religious American morons complaining about sex on TV.
and I’m tired of morally bankrupt heathen idiots clambering for sex on TV because they can’t get it in real life.
I like sex both in real life and on TV.
you are free to change the channel
I’m a religious American who loves to watch Torchwood for the stories and the characters, but I don’t watch it for the sex – so it means little to me if there’s more of it or not. I’m not a perv… like you…
Excited for this!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but RTD didn’t write ALL of the episodes. I thought Jane Espenson was at least writing a couple eps?
Did you not see any of Bill’s other films? He’s going to be amazing in Torchwood – just sit back and watch.
I absolutely loved the show on BBC America. Now, however, like a lot of viewers, I won’t be able to see this season, since I don’t have(Can’t afford)a premium channel like Starz. So when do the rest of us poor people get a chance to see this? When it’s done on Starz, and hopefully comes out on Netflix?
This really wasn’t fair to all the fans who watched BBC America to go the money route. I really wonder how many fans you’re going to lose because we can’t afford the premium cable channels.
And if the choice was no more Torchwood or Torchwood on Starz, would you have picked no more Torchwood? You’ll see it the same way other people will – if you don’t have Starz, you can watch it (eventually) on Netflix or wait for the dvd release. Same as the poor people who couldn’t afford or didn’t get BBC America when it was on there.
Thought #1: You can’t afford Starz, but you can afford Netflix?!
Thought #2: Wait until all 10 eps have aired. Sign up for Starz. Access and watch all 10 eps through their on-demand library option within a day or two. Then cancel Starz and only pay the pro-rata rate for your two day subscription. It’ll cost you like 50 cents. I don’t know why everyone doesn’t just do this, it’s the biggest loophole in the cable company subscription model and it’s so obvious.
ya, and then you have to keep doing that all year long, i’m sure they’ll love that. support cable companies who take a chance, it’s cheaper than a few drinks a month
do what I do for anything on premium that I want to see! Wait til it comes out on dvd and check it out from your local library. Totally Free!!! It may take a while to be able to see it, but the wait is well worth it!
“All but the 10th episode have been written by Russell T. Davies, who is in LA now working on the final script.”
Really? Do Jane Espenson, Doris Egan and all the other Torchwood writers know that?
I suppose what JB did say was that writing on all episodes but the tenth one has been completed and RTD is just finishing that one. He is cowriting it with Jane Espenson and he is the sole writer of episode one, but no other episode has been written by him. He also has of course conceived the basic plot, developed it with the other writers, given them notes on their scripts, etc.
Actually several.
Can’t wait, I’m a newcomer to the show, but I caught up with all 3 previous seasons in the matter of a few weeks, now I’m in Torchwood withdrawal. Need…more…Torchwood…NOW.
Is torchwood coming to canada? If so which station. I love the show!!!
If I can stray to the geeky side: Has there ever been a series that jumped overseas while maintaining its original characters and continuity? and even more extraordinarily — within the continuity and universe of the series from which it was a spin-off? Along those lines, I hope there will be at least a brief mention of The Doctor (which was one of the most touching parts of “Torchwood: Children of Earth” in my estimation).
I’m still not clear on what this is going to be. Is it a reboot with new characters and premise, or is it a continuation of what has already happened?
I watched the first season of Torchwood and it’s a great show. I stopped watching because they are practically sticking all the gay situations into your face.
Don’t misunderstand me, I’m all for homosexuals. Life is short enough and get your jollies however you can.
I think I also read that the star is gay in real life. Again, I don’t have a problem with this or a star of a show being gay on tv as well. Just tone down the gayness and bring in a little more heterosexual romance so that us straight guys can relate.
I will be checking out the new season. I hope they replaced the chubby female lead, I mean there was nothing on that show to appeal to the straight man who likes hot chicks. Well, except for the great stories and sci-fi.
It is definitely a better show than the weirded out Doctor Who. That show has to much British humor than I and most American’s can’t stand.
1) If you think Eve Myles is “chubby” you’ve been drinking the Hollywood Kool-Aid for way too long. She’s maybe a size six, e.g., something approaching a normal, healthy, non-starving woman.
2) You’re a bigoted homophobic asshole. If two straight people kissing isn’t “sticking all the straight situations into your face” then neither is two people of the same sex kissing.
That’s all.
THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!!!!
Wow, did you read his comment intelligently or not… lol
I know guys who are homophobic and they would have said that they hate the show and to get rid of the homosexual scenes. He did not say that!! He just sounds like a guy who’s cool with homosexuals and just wants more hot babes from bud light commercials. I love reading comments like yours, because it tells me that there are some moronic people out there.
BTW, she is chunky and so are you from how you are sounding. Stop trying to make delusional and false statements that don’t have any truth in the real world. Their is a new invention and it is called “a diet.” Have you ever heard of “a gym.” Just saying.
so glad Torchwood is back. I really missed that show show.
Well said Lynn. I love how straight guys couch everything in “I’m OK with that” when they obviously are not. Well, I’m not OK with having to see straight characters practically insert their organs into each other in prime time but gay characters can barely hug without a major uproar for so called tolerant straights. Fuck off ‘hetero’
Chubby? Really? That woman looks like a woman, not a lollipop! Nothing wrong with her figure at all. Also the Character of Capt. Jack is not gay, if you paid attention you would see that from day one.
Bravo, Lynn!! I could not have said it better
Yeah, you’re a bigot.
The female lead is chubby?really? Must prefer anorexic women! She is real & definitely not chubby! Also you must not have paid much attention to The character of Capt Jack. He lust’s after ALL! Duh! And as for that crack about the Doctor!pLEASE! Where do you think Torchwood came from? If you don’t get the humor or understand what they’re saying…PUT YOUR DAMN CAPTION ON!I am one American of thousands who GET(understand?duh) & LOVE the Brit shows! Maybe you should just go watch an old episode of Andy Griffith or something ‘eh?????
O & don’t include “most Americans” in your BS tirade! Speak for yourself & only for yourself!Speaking as an American.I & several I know watch shows that require AN OPEN MIND,not to mention something called IMAGINATION!Shows like these are not made for VERY SMALL MINDED People! So embarrassed that your trying to represent “most Americans”!!!!
Wow. I have to agree with Lynn. Yes, based on your comments, homosexuality bothers you. You also have a warped sense of what a healthy weight is for women. Sorry, most often the British don’t force their actresses to weigh 95 lbs. just to be on TV. And I prefer women with curves.
While the character of Gwen Cooper wasn’t my favorite on the show (that was reserved for Ianto and Jack) Eve is a fantastic actress and she is as far from ‘chubby’ as you can get. Maybe you seen her when she was pregnant during CoE. As for the rest, stop being such a homophobic idiot. I’m a straight female and find any kind of love to be beautiful (and 2 men kissing are HOT). So grow up and get with the times.
Judging from that photo it looks like Barrowman put down the Guinness.
He looked pretty doughy last time I watched Torchwood.
As a mother, I prefer my children see naked bodies and lovemaking than bloody bodies and violence. We have to start a global wave of tolerance and unity as mankind, not hatred and division, if we’re going to survive as a species on Earth.
Yeah, Torchwood! We’re ready for the 21st century in the good old US of A!!!
Beautiful.
Your kids are blessed to have such a loving light guiding their way.
You mean the 21st century that already started? Jeez – how great of you to be ready 11 years late. That’s quite American isn’t it?
The best thing to happen to Dr Who was the fact that Russell and his obsession with sexual innuendo interfering with good story was disposed of. I had hoped the move to America would have meant that quality writers would supplant Mr Davies.
Sadly he’s still fully involved it seems, so my hopes for the show have dimmed.
…Ten years late. The 21′st Century started in 2001, not 2000. It’s pretty easy to figure out how that works. Count to 10. Did you start at 0? No. The 10, 100, 1000 or what-not ends a sequence, it does not begin it.
john…You watch Torchwood, but you don’t Like RTD?? If it wasn’t for him, Torchwood wouldn’t exist…
“Tone down the gayness”… really, really? that’s what give the show its edge! Man up people!
I hope Torchwood never sucomes to hetero’s bigoted ideals.
I wouldn’t say there is any blatant gay scenes there more straight scenes, anyways dude its modern times, if you can’t cope just don’t watch.
Its insulting to the show and its fans to have someone like you as a fan yourself.
I’m glad Torchwood has a bigger budget (does that mean non of our licence fee went to it?), more drama and madness hopfully.
Exactly. There are lots of shows with no “gayness” for this guy to watch. Torchwood is different, and vive la difference!
Someone actually expressed doubts about Bill Pullman’s acting? Not seen Lost Highway, then? From comedic in ruthless people, ludicrously gung ho in ID4, to manically comic/sudden shift to dark in Zero effect and the totally monstrous, genuinely unnerving performance in the David Lynch I mentioned first of all, I’d be amazed if anybody else in the cast of Torchwood ever has or ever will show so much ability to act in totally the right way as dictated by the material in whatever script is put in front of him.
