Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2011)—The National Association of Theatre Owners does not and could not encourage its members to engage in any boycotts of any movies distributed by any company. Recent press reports to the contrary are completely false.
In an article published on April 13 in The Guardian, it was suggested that NATO indicated that cinema operators were prepared not to screen movies, and specifically referenced the coming Harry Potter film. No one from The Guardian contacted NATO before the original article was published. At our request, The Guardian did later change the article to remove the erroneous reference to the Harry Potter film.
Then later on April 13, the blog “Business Insider” entitled “Harry Potter 8 Dropped From Theaters?” suggested that NATO “is threatening to drop some of this summer’s biggest blockbusters” and that “screens under NATO are threatening to boycott upcoming studio releases, starting with Warner Bros. sure to be box office-gargantuan Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.” Again, these stories, and others that have followed, are completely false and no one from the organizations responsible for the stories contacted anyone at NATO.
NATO has often articulated our concerns about the possible release of “premium VOD” movies in an early window. Our association issued statements on June 16, 2010 and again on March 31, 2011 regarding those concerns. But as our 2010 statement made clear, “individual theater companies must and will make decisions about release window changes in their own company’s interest.” NATO cannot and will not make those decisions for them.

Can’t blame them.
The basic problem is that the movie-going experience is so off-putting to adults. It is inevitable that eventually digital on demand will show films on the same day as the theaters. Perhaps this will be good news for theatregoers who want more intelligent films. But it will not be good news for theatre owners.
Uhhh…. the movie going experience is off-putting?? This sounds like a comment from some PR rep at a studio justifying why their movie just bombed (see: Arthur, Your Highness, Sucker Punch, etc.)!
How about releasing better movies aimed for adults AND younger crowds – instead of the latest vampire-zombie-superhero-found-footage-reboot-vapid-vacent-teen-star-who-can’t-act-POS aimed at the 20-23 year old males who are at home playing Call of Duty anyway?
Perhaps something with an intelligent script and captivating performances? There’s nothing like enjoying a great film in the cinema with an audience – it’s a communal experience that can’t be replicated at home, unless you have a 200 seat home theater.
I know the point has been made ad nauseum, but audiences will go see movies like Inception, True Grit, The King’s Speech, The Fighter, Toy Story 3 in the theaters. So you can have personal films and event films – and both can make a lot of money – IN THE THEATERS – if they’re cinematic experiences.
Yes, movie-going is frequently off-putting. They only have crappy/unhealthy food and very few theaters offer beer or wine– and that’s assuming you want to wait in monster lines to buy the stuff. Then you have to sit through 15-20 minutes of commercials. After that, you have to endure all the talking and moving around during the actual movie.
All these press pieces mean nothing right now – as do all the threats and boycott conversations. BOTTOM LINE: WHY IS ATTENDANCE DOWN OVER 20% THIS YEAR ? FURTHER, WHY WAS ATTENDANCE DOWN OVER 6% FOR 2010 – WITH HUGE BLOCKBUSTERS RELEASED DURING THAT YEAR – INCLUDING AVATAR. BAD NEWS LAST YEAR – WORSE THIS YEAR. THESE FOLKS NEED TO STOP DILLY DALLYING ABOUT VOD AND ALL THAT JUNK – DEAL WITH THE ATTENDANCE FIRST – THEN DEAL WITH THE REST. NOBODY IS ADDRESSING THAT. YOU CAN COMB THRU ALL THE BLOGS AND SITES AND PAPERS – NOBODY IS ADDRESSING ATTENDANCE. IF THESE FOLKS DON’T DO THAT – THEY’RE NOT GONNA HAVE A BUSINESS TO WORRY ABOUT
Attendance being down is one thing (ie, we can “always” put the ticket price screws to our remaining customer base…) but this year *box office revenue* is down over 20%!!.
*That* means massive head chopping…
Yes because of a thing called PIRATEBAY
Go to the: Arclight, Grove, etc.
NATO and it’s illustrious members are such a bunch of pussies! Let’s send out some strongly-worded press releases and then, nothing. That’s how it has always been and always will be. As an independent theater owner, it makes me proud NOT to be associated with this group of spineless turds. For Gods sake, put your foot down about SOMETHING! ANYTHING!
When it gets to the point the studios demand a percentage of your concession stands, NATO will not only give it to them, but probably serve it to them with a smile.
Heh, it just costs too darn for the “movie experience” now which is like others have mentioned, has become nothing but an overcommercialized, over-priced, HASSLE with incredibly poor customer service.
We’ve tolerated the megalopoly “corporate” multi-cinema nightmare for too long. Time for it to DIE…I support the small, local screens (The Capital in Laurens, SC and the Sylvia in York, SC) that offer first run movies, in an intimate setting for 5 and 6 bux respectively. (I can actually buy a MEAL and ENJOY it along with a reasonably priced adult beverage for a movie that opens just a couple days after the multiplexes do!).
Sometimes a bad economy roots out the “bad companies” and I am personally HAPPY some of these corporate sharks are finding out the hard way that we the CUSTOMER don’t put up being treated like cattle to slaughter. Ditto for Hollywood!.
Support your independent screen!
