UPDATE 4 PM: It’s a big start to Summer 2011, with both the Marvel/Disney actioner Thor 3D distributed by Paramount and Universal’s Fast Five such huge hits in their opening week. Both movies opened earlier overseas than in U.S. due to the Easter holiday Down Under.
Friday numbers for the start of the Easter weekend have just come in for Fast Five from Oz and Kiwi. In Australia, Fast Five is No. 1 again with 35% market share. Today’s gross is $2.4M (U.S. dollars) at 229 dates, up 20% over Thursday. The two-day total is $4.6M and the three-day cume is now is $6.7M. In New Zealand, Fast Five is No. 1 again today with 40% market share. Friday’s gross is $230K at 55 dates for a two-day total of $490K.
1:45 PM: Through today, Thor 3D has grossed $3 million (U.S. dollars) in Australia, or 30% ahead of the first two days of the original Iron Man, which did $2.3M. (Of course, IM1 was only 2D, so no higher 3D ticket prices.)

Probably because the star is Australian.
Why do i care about the box office in Australia? That has nothing to do with BO here.
Easter holidays down here in Australia alright! Good Friday off, Monday is Anzac Day to go with Easter Monday, so Monday and Tuesday are public holidays… going to be a lot of “sick” people taking Wed, Thurs and Friday off too, got to make it a 9 day weekend
Went to my local cinema yesterday… was packed. Came back home and did a Mad Men marathon
I guess the Marvel Publicity machine had to get a positive story out there about Thor since Fast Five is kicking it’s ass everywhere.
Kicking it’s ass everywhere? I’m pretty sure Thor’s only been released in Australia (opens April 29th worldwide) and Fast Five is the FIFTH entry in an established franchise.
So it’s pretty unfair to compare it to the first film, even though it’s getting FAR better reviews.
Because opening better than the studios biggest hit isn’t actually a positive?
And “everywhere” would only include Australia, since that’s the only territory where Thor is playing so far.
Nope, Fast Five also opened in the UK on the 21st and is doing well there also.
Exactly! It’s really embarrassing that the FOURTH sequel to Fast & Furious is kicking Thor’s butt. Hardly surprising if you’ve seen the Thor trailer with the crappy costumes, the silly “emoting” of the lead, and the sets straight out of Toys ‘R Us.
Disney/Marvel had to find a silver lining somewhere to try to distract from the fact that Thor is already under-performing.
Actually, the Fast & Furious series does ridiculously well in Australia, if I’m not mistaken.
Thor has been getting GREAT reviews, and it’s open in Australia is good, better than Iron Man.
It’s not that impressive, if you consider the price of 3D movie tickets these days.
Being 30% ahead would likely account for any ticket price increase, but either way I’m sure Marvel would be thrilled to even match Iron Man 1.
It’s because Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is an Aussie
Quick, quick put out a PR piece to distract from the fact that Thor got beaten by the FOURTH SEQUEL to F&F!!!
And let’s not forget that Iron Man had tremendous word-of-mouth going for it. It started ok but it kept running and running. Thor will not be like that. I attended a screening and there were lots of groans, laughs during the “dramatic” scenes, and even boos when the baddie robot (yep, a robot!) shows up. I haven’t see such silly VFX since the old Godzilla movie. Truly sad.
Thanks for proving that you didn’t see the movie.
Alex certainly saw the same movie I did: “The Destroyer” as they call it, is effectively just that – a “baddie robot”.
I watched Thor at a press screening (very large, keen-to-see-it audience) in a very major overseas territory. There were involuntary laughs, moans, groans and sighs and when during the final crawl the words “Thor will return in The Avengers” appeared, there were even boos and local language cries for “No! No!” I kid you not.
Thor’s a mishmash closer to an episode of Xena than anywhere near Iron Man. Given its budget it should have been so much better, and I usually love this kind of stuff. I think it will open well given the subject material, marketing push and certain positive reviews, but it’s not a keeper.
Thor did not improve at all on Friday then… First flop of the summer?
Sure looks like Thor is a flop. Fast Five did almost as much money in one single day as Thor has made in two days (with higher 3D prices). My guess is word-of-mouth will kill Thor.
Hope Thor does OK, for the sake of Avengers if nothing else. Too bad they are pushing 3D so hard, I think the public is getting a little annoyed at the high prices, and stupid glasses.
Great news there nikke. And thanks for info on the aussie box office. Hope this becomes a regular feature!! We lack any regular reports down here.
The f&f5 number is line with expectations here. I must say that Thor is stronger than expected. Any news on how rio or hop is traveling this weekend?
Fast Fife shouldnt be compared with Thor, it has got its fans on toes due to its previous segas. What realy made me angry was 2 find that the cinema was closed on easters after having lunch with ma girl friend. Thor has just made its first appearance in 3D would say its got more umf than Fast Fife.
I’m guessing these superhero movies do way better in the US where comic books have cult status, so Thor will probably do better here than any place else. Since Branagh is directing it, I’ll probably see it at some point, otherwise I don’t care too much.
Because America is not the center of the universe. And it’s only been released down there so far.
Get a clue.
I haven’t seen Thor yet, since it hasn’t opened here…but a friend of mine has seen it, and even if he is not a real fan, he said that it’s AWESOME. The story was simple, but he loved the action and CGI. I will see it the first time it’s released. Whatever the box office take, I am glad we got a live-action Thor movie. I have been a fan since 1989.
