Underscoring the dearth of repeatable new procedurals on the broadcast networks, another CBS crime drama has landed a rich cable syndication deal very early into its run. TNT has nabbed off-network rights to CBS’ freshman Hawaii Five-0 for a license fee just north of $2 million, in line with the recent record-breaking sale prices for CBS’ NCIS: LA to USA and The Mentalist to TNT. Those deals were made in November 2009, two months into NCIS: LA‘s freshman year and The Mentalist‘s second season.
Hawaii Five-0, a remake of the 1960s cop drama, is yet to get a formal renewal for next season from CBS, something that was never in doubt but is now guaranteed, following the big off-network sale. The series, which was sold by CBS TV Distribution, will begin airing on TNT in summer 2014. “Hawaii Five-0 is a top-notch procedural drama that has already built a strong following,” said TNT’s head of programming Michael Wright. Hawaii Five-0, which stars Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, has been an OK, not outstanding, ratings performer in Live plus same day but a big DVR gainer. In Live+7, a January episode drew a series high audience of 19.3 million viewers.

‘Ooh those people at TNT must be mad buying such a ‘failure’ to go along with shows like The Mentalist.’ (Impression of the usual bashers of rabid Castle fans and loopy Moonlight nuts).
If I read one more comment about what a ‘failure’ HFO is it will just become too boring. It has similar demos most weeks to The Mentalist. It has better demos than every single other ten pm drama on any network except Castle – where they are pretty much neck and neck!
This week – it’s worse week yet. It still managed a demo of 2.5 with a 2.0 lead in and Castle post DWTS boost on the opposite side. When Castle had the great Bachelor lead in mid season it consistently only rated 2.3′s ish.
I actually love Castle and watch it every week on DVR but I am sick of seeing the HFO bashing on these sites. It will struggle these last few weeks as it is on a dire night with no other good shows and is against ABC biggest power house night and its own night has collapsed around it but next year it will be back bigger and better and has done well all season with lots of difficulties due to CBS and Mr. Sheens row.
For those who slate it look how well it does compared to a show like Suspect Behaviour. Which can only manage the same demo as HFO this week (HFO’s WORST week) when SVU is in repeats and it has the motherships 3.4 gravy lead in.
“Is yet”?
And what happens when it doesn’t make it to season three?
Personally, I can’t stand H5O and most anything else on CBS. BUT, I am so thrilled for DDK. Glad to see a former LOSTie doing well and I hope he’s getting a HUGE payday from the success of this show. More power to him!
“Hawaii Five-0 is a top-notch procedural drama that has already built a strong following”…
Nice that it sold but I would not call it top-notch by any means. And it had good buzz at the beginning of the season, but I personally don’t know anyone that has stuck with it…except maybe for a few Alex O fangirls.
YAY, I’m so glad to hear that HFO will continue on! It’s the best show on TV right now, and it deserves all the airings it can get!
Jake, you must not know many people, because everyone I know loves it…and we aren’t ‘Alex fangirls’.
Turner says ‘aloha’ to more money.
H50 is well done and Scott Caan is having fun with this role
