Here is a first look at Cartoon Network’s ThunderCats, a reboot of the 1980s action classic. The series, about Lion-O and his battle against evil in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans).

When will Hollywood stop raping my childhood?
This was a tough show to watch when I was a kid…
boring as shit.
no thanks.
Yes, a bastardized version of the legendary Thundercats. This doesn’t even come close to Ted’s vision for his creations. A teen Lion-O: NO! Their home on Third Earth: NO! Stones of Power: NO!
Legendary Thundercats? Are you serious? The original Thundercats cartoon was awful. With the trailer alone the Thundercats reboot has already cemented itself as the better version.
Agreed! I remember as a kid wanting so much to like Thundercats but it was so disjointed. There was no clear storyline.
I have no problem with rebooting a cartoon series. Why not? Thundercats can only get better.
Yes, please!!
No Snarf???? No Panthro???? No viewership. At least not by me. Hate when they simultaneously steal from and bastardize the original. Plus, the animation was better in the 80′s! Looks like cartoon network just rushed this out for the ratings and buzz. The franchise was huge in the 80′s (the highest rated saturday morning cartoon of it’s era, beating out “Transformers”, “GI Joe”, “He Man”, etc…) and this looks like a cheap and boring exploitation, not an exciting re-imagining. Oh, and thanks for making Lion-O into a teenager. Don’t we all just love when adult superheroes are turned into teens for ratings. Note to producers of comic based fare: Teens and kids want to root for and look up to adult, strong male and female characters, not kids. The whole idea of a pre-teen relating to a teen Lion-O (or spiderman, or superman) is absolutely preposterous! Not mention quite lame. So disappointing for this lifelong Thundercats fan.
they are in it, just not in the trailer for some reason
Snarf and Panthro are in the show. And Snarf is one of the most despised characters of the series, so I don’t think his absence would turn away viewers.
The animation in the 80′s was nowhere near the quality of the current series. You’re actually the first person I’ve seen actually make that statement.
I disagree that it looks cheap and boring. It actually looks kinda epic to me.
You clearly not as big a fan as you claim to be.If you were, you would know that Lion-O was a child/teen in that series, too.He was 12 years old when they left their planet.Because the journey was so long, they had to go into suspended animation.Lion-O’s pod was damaged, and his body aged. When he awoke, he had the body of an adult, but his mind was still that of a 12 year old, having been unconscious the entire time.So the new version is actually older.
And do you know any kids? They like watching shows with characters who are like them.Sure, they like adult heroes, but they prefer younger ones. They identify with them more. They can actually put themselves in their place. You say it’s preposterous for a pre-teen to relate to a teen hero. That makes absolutely no sense to me.Of course they can relate to it.
I’m also a lifelong Thundercats fan, since I was 4 years old in 1985.And this looks really good to me.I am looking forward to it.
Thank you, cindercity. I thought I’d gone completely delusional with my memory while reading these other comments.
- Snarf sucked.
- Animation looks FAR better than the original.
- Lion-O was a kid who became big, now he’s a teen to begin with.
- The new story looks like it will actually make some sense, the old one barely resembled anything logical.
- Last but not least, MUMM-RAAAAAAA motherfuckers!
I got a bit worried until 1:43…
then finally, it was confirmed…
That little fucker Snarf is back, baby!
Panthro and snarf ARE in this version, and if I must nerd out: you do realize in the 80′s Lion-O was a 12 year old whose suspension capsule malfunctioned in “exodus” giving him an adult body, yes? He’s always been a pre-teen in a larger body. It’s called “wish fulfillment.”
What? Snarf is in the trailer and Panthro is listed on IMDB as a character.
Wow, when did Cheetarah get a boob job? Not that I’m complaining…
Looks awesome.
And Snarflover, go cry in the corner somewhere. I’m a dedicated TC fan, probably moreso than you and I’m loving what I’m seeing. Snarf and Panthro ARE in it, so you look and sound like a fool. That was some stellar animation, and I’ve always wanted to see what life was like on Thundera and now I get to. You’re complaining just to complain.
err since when was lion-o an adult? he was a boy in a adult body due to their hyper sleep or something.
Yeah, I saw Snarf in there (ugh) but where is Panthro??? He was my favorite – and I agree with the above comment – No Panthro, no watch.
Not a fan of the “anime” look of the animation.
Whomever is voicing Lion-O was the wrong choice; needs to be deeper; and when Panthro hits the screen his should be even deeper than that.
I was looking forward to this being released; but as I don’t care for the anime look I likely won’t watch…bummer for me…
“I only ask that you fight like cats!”
Bwahahahahaha – Can Not Wait.
Sorry, I couldn’t tell if this was a remix of the old show. I actually thought the beginning was a setup from the old footage. Yikes.
Seriously.
Will Friedle, who is great, is voicing Lion-0.And he is a teen in the trailer, so the voice is appropriate.
Here’s some of the other cast:
Emmanuelle Chriqui as Cheetara
Kevin Michael Richardson as Panthro
Matthew Mercer as Tygra
Larry Kenney(original voice of Lion-O) as Claudus
Clancy Brown as Grune the Destroyer
Robin Atkin Downes as Mumm-Ra
Another tidbit is Lion-O and Tygra will be brothers.
Needs more Panthro.
I know he is in the new version but the marketing of this show has been really odd if they’re trying to tap into original fan base. You wouldn’t leave Wolverine out of the a trailer for a show about the X-Men.
It looks like they’re going hardcore with the whole “re-imagining” thing. Are they even on third earth? Jaaga died in like the first 5 minutes of the original but it seems like he’ll figure prominently in the series. And I’m assuming Lion-O’s father dies leaving Lion-O to take the throne of Thunderra?
If you’re going to remake it then tell a different story don’t take the same characters and re-write their histories. Why would I want to watch this Thundercats if to do so I have to pretend that the original show didn’t happen.
Panthro better be in this or let the massive boycott begin. If he is not I hope they cancel this after the first episode.
Jeez, you guys are acting like a bunch of nerds. They didn’t make this show so that a bunch of 30 something adults would watch it and buy the DVDs. They made it so that a bunch of 10 year olds would watch it and buy the DVDs, and toys, and clothes, and lunch boxes, etc.
Just because you guys watched the original when you were a kid, it doesn’t make you the target audience or mean that your input is worthwhile at all. It’s a cartoon, made for KIDS, so just accept it for what it is and stop complaining.
I was always against a remake of the classic but this doesn’t look that bad. It sounds like they got the original voice of Lion-O to be the King Thungercat…and Cheetara will yet again guide young kids to puberty. YES! Emanuelle Chriqui is such a fitting choice for the voice of Cheetara, hopefully she will be at the top of the list when they start casting the feature film.
I don’t like the anime look either. Cartoon Network did the same thing with Transformers Prime. It’s interesting when you think about all the great shows in the 80′s that were original. Almost 20yrs later everything is just a reboot. Next up Bravestar.
