EXCLUSIVE: CAA is about to have its retreat in Ojai this weekend. And there are some personnel
moves being made ahead of it. Motion picture talent agents Tony Lipp and Kelly Tiffan announced today they are exiting the agency (separately) in what has been a long and amicable process. They’ll both become managers. There’s a going-away party tonight for Tiffan. Both agents are finalizing where they’ll be going and with which clients. Lipp, a 15-year CAA veteran, already has commitments from Matt Bomer, Simon Russell Beale, John Cleese, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Lane, Max Minghella, Jonathan Groff, Patrick Wilson, Mamie Gummer, Jack Quaid and others.

So after all these years of these clients not needing managers (since they are repped by CAA after all), suddenly they now need one? Well then they ought to be at 360 or Untitled.
Hilarious. I will use this post, and your genius response every-time I sit down with a CAA client who is being told he doesn’t “need” a manager.
TeeHeeHee read the article carefully or learn how to think.
kelly tiffan=the greatest. funny, classy, great taste, great clients, great future.
Great clients, huh? Who is she bringing with her? Her amazing roster of Jordana Brewster… Jorda.. ummm… *crickets*
At least she got a party out of the deal.
hmmmm, clearing out
totally predictable here. tony lipp runs around all day saying his clients don’t need managers but we all knew for years tony was just buying his time so he can exit with an immediate client list. He was never cut out to be a strong agent and will probably flounder as a manager as he isn’t strong unless he ends up at some bigger company to support him.
i find it very curious that Lipp is becoming a manager. On more than one occassion he remarked that a great agent is all that’s necessary, and managers have been redundant…typically many of his clients didn’t have managers for just that reason. Time will tell..
yeah but…he had a job back then as an agent. dont you think he was protecting that job when he had it, like hes protecting this job now that he has this one?
Thats a defensive play that agents use to cover themselves if they need a golden parachute – management is always a backup so they keep them manager free!!
Lipp has been approached throughout the years to partner in mgmt. I always wondered when he would jump at the opportunity. Here it is. Dying to find here he is going…..
If i were a betting woman i would say Schiff Co.
Hey, without managers who would get the unnecessary EP credit? Think about it.
Tony is an excellent representative – passionate, intelligent, caring and honest. He has fantastic taste and will undoubtedly find success as a manager.
Perfect-now there are four companies that CAA exclusively feeds clients. Way to spread the wealth……
Kelly Tiffan’s clients will be fortunate indeed!
Managed and honored by the amazing
Kel !!
Lipp is an awesome agent who actually takes his clients calls and is involved in their lives. he’s much more cut out for management than the frat-vibe agency life anyway. any mgmt group would be lucky to get him–and many have tried!
Tony Lipp is a wonderful person. I knew him before he was an agent and he is honest and kind. It has been years since I have seen him and am happy to hear he is doing well!
Wait, I’m confused. Don’t agents just always do what’s best for their clients no matter if it’s in their interest or not. Next you’re going to tell me there’s no Easter Bunny…
I think the town just got a glimpse at what its like to be a mid to low level player at a big shop like CAA. You don’t get to be there.
Last time CAA went on retreat they came up with the genius slogan “100% market share”. Maybe Walmart called and wanted it back.
I’m dying to hear what pearls of industry wisdom come from their next meeting of the mind-less.
“winning” is taken
Does 360 need more talent managers? They are already kind of talent heavy already…
Managers can do more they bring the whole package. Agents join the party usually after the managers has done all the leg work. I had a client who even after landing a big deal CAA passed. Why because they didn’t think the studio would support the project and the fact that I wasn’t a big enough manager and a latino to boot.
The project was very successful and my clients ended up at William Morris. Agent only wants you when you are worth the commission the bottom line its all about dollars.
wow. that’s insightful.
Tony was a very good boy. Did everything he was told and did the job that had to be done and no one else wanted ( those Nathan Lane % of the house deals don’t come close to a Desperate Housewives renegotiation). He helped client’s remember their “art” and gave us the joy of listening to Katie Holmes speak the words of Arthur Miller. The clients loved him until they loved Joe Mahota more…When Scarlett took Joe to the Oscars, you could here them starting to paint over Tony’s parking spot from 3000 miles away..Scarlett trumps Maggie therefore Joe trumps Tony. It will be interesting to see where Bryan arranges for Tony to announce ” is a perfect match for him, though he will miss agenting, blah, blah, blah…”. It will also be interesting to see what Maggie and Peter do. The power struggle is already legendary, who will be the last man/woman standing could be epic…My money is on Tony with the full backing of the CAA machine.
Good managers are your career couselors.
Most agents are pimps. Good agents listen to your manager.
TLipp is the one they should be throwing the party for. He will be sorely missed at that miserable place. One of the few truly nice, honest, patient, caring people at the place. The CAA path to becoming the Borg continues.
Tony best of luck to you. I KNOW you will be a kick ass manager for/of your clients, and a great partner for film makers looking to tell wonderful stories.
This is sad for the theater community. Tony Lipp was a great supporter and help for getting his clients involved with theater on and off broadway. A good guy all around.
so it was Anonymous all along for Lipp!! Tiffan can’t say the same lol–unless there’s more to come?
