The nature of a hangover is that it’s dreadful because of the lingering headache. Warner Bros is experiencing just that after mistakenly slapping its trailer for the R-rated Todd Phillips-directed The Hangover sequel on the front of the PG-13 film The Source Code, without first running that by the MPAA. Warner Bros has rectified the situation and issued the following statement:
“In our haste to meet the placement schedule for this trailer, we failed to properly vet the final version with the MPAA. We acted immediately to correct the mistake and removed the trailer from screens.”
The good part for Warner Bros is Deadline readers get to the see the offending trailer again. Here it is:

You sure they’re not pulling it because the trailer reveals the sequel to be a shot for shot remake of the original?
which is exactly why it looks hilarious, there are always high expectations with a sequel like this and they did the smart thing and said “fuk it, lets stick to what worked”
@suicide: Let me guess: creative exec?
Why would you say that? I don’t work in the industry and totally agree. People don’t want this wheel reinvented.
“Clever things make people feel stupid, and unexpected things make them feel scared.”
Funny enough, the version in theaters before Source Code didnt have the Kanye West cue that the online version has in the intro, so even THIS version is not exactly the same as what was seen in theaters . .weird.
Since when can you not show Green Band trailers for R-rated movies before a PG-13 flick? That is pretty much ridiculous.
WB brags about how they can get any ruling from the MPAA they want (Dark Knight, Sucker Punch) so why is this a surprise?
The article doesn’t have the whole story. The practice of promoting R-rated flicks before PG-13 features is nothing new; the first “Hangover 2″ teaser was on “Battle LA”, after all. No, the issue at hand is the “approved for appropriate audiences” on the green-band trailer.
While the MPAA may have approved the pretty damn raunchy trailer for “Hangover 2″ for “appropriate audiences”, they probably meant for other R-rated features – at any rate, it’s certainly not appropriate for anyone who brings a child to see “Source Code” and gets a faceful of Zach Galifianakis simulating oral sex with a live monkey. “Funny People” had a similar situation two years ago, with an “appropriate audiences” trailer that wasn’t quite extreme enough for a red-band trailer, and theaters were specifically instructed not to deviate from what versions could play before what film.
very insightful, donnacha. i totally agree. the trailer is hilarious and i’ll be there opening night, but i would have been put off if i had been in previews for source code with my 10 year old.
WB executives do not “mistakenly slap” a trailer on a picture. Big executive decision costing big money. Doesn’t happen.
It isn’t appropriate for to bring a child to see Source Code either.
looks just as bad as the first one which sucked
oh… i get it… you’re one of those knobjobs who doesn’t find anything funny that other people find funny (not to suggest that i am in support of this sequel)
Spoken like a true asshole. Let me guess, you’re wearing jeans that are black and painted on with a loose tank top and ironic butler hat.
Wow. That looks like shit.
Why did they pull it? It says approved to all audiences.
what they should run in front of source code is a 5-minute long warning banner that reads “LEAVE NOW AND SEE SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T SUCK”
All those warning banners are currently in use with Sucker Punch and Battle LA.
ROFLMAO@Roy. Anyone think this may be a publicity ploy?!?!
Is this some reverse psychology tactic by WB marketing? There isn’t 1 thing wrong w/ this trailer, except maybe the movie is a remake of the 1st. Are they trying to attach some sort of controversy to the movie in order to attract attention?
this looks pretty bad… just Zach G improving cheap jokes… which are funny btw, but for 2 hrs?
This post has been approved for all audiences by the American Internet Professional Posting Authority.
Hangover 2 is the funniest comedy of the year and we will show the trailer whenever we want. The MPAA can go to hell.
Thank you.
I don’t care what any of you think. I laughed and laughed, and yes I saw the original. Oh, and anyone who can watch a film in which hundreds of innocent people repeatedly get blown to smithereens, can watch this trailer.
Jesus. I love antics. I love pranks. I love laughing at out of control characters. That trailer sucked. How can something be so one-note and be so sacred? I think this looks like a perfect sequel to the original. It will probably make a mint. I’m scared. Hold me.
i wonder if WB got this play from the brilliant Paranomal 2 campaign’s playbook– remember when they pulled their trailer cause it was ‘too scary for audiences’.
if so– yay. hangover is an awesome franchise. hope it continues forever. long live hollywood, baby!
“Paging Dr. F-Bomb. Dr. F-Bomb.”
Headline should read: “Hangover 2 ad agency pretends not checking with mpaa a ‘mistake,’ gains 5 days free publicity.”
Exactly. Thank you, Daniel.
Saw the first film; thought it was good, but overrated.
However……the trailer for Hangover 2 was inappropriate for general audiences. A pig being sheared in half and its blood splattered on the occupants of a car is a bit much, not to mention the bestiality/erection joke towards the end.
The first one sucked and made a fortune. The second one will suck way more and make a fortune.
STUNT — Story has gone viral and everyone know HO2 is coming. Great job by PR Dept.
I completely agree and this is the first thing i thought when i heard this story. They did this on purpose, knowing they would have to pull it and it would generate a ton of publicity. But they also hedged their bet and ran it with a movie that is likely to be mostly adult audiences anyway. it isn’t like they ran it with a Harry Potter movie.
Nibbling on a weiner is considered “raunchy”?
Don’t you mean a water bottle?
WB = Great PR and marketing. Whether the MPAA approved it or not doesn’t matter. This was done deliberately. Millions of teens have seen the trailer now.
I wonder how many 14 year olds will get caught trying to watch The Hangover II with a Kung Fu Panda 2 ticket?
I’ll bet that is there plan. They want people to give their money to Dreamworks Animation and Paramount but watch their movie. That’s really smart. I recently signed a contract with Toyota and then went down the street and drove a Ford Fusion off the lot. I don’t think the Ford people minded it all.
Sorry but this whole fuss reeks of a publicity stunt. Which that bloated turd Zach Galifinakis (or whatever the hell his name is) would disappear. Not funny whatsoever and revolting to look at as well.
So… let me get this straight: they all wake up not knowing where Doug is again, and the same thing happens, with the same characters – except it’s in Thailand? Talk about beating a dead horse. Why not at least switch up who gets lost this time?
And why were none of the jokes they chose to highlight funny? Was that their best material?
I’m horrified in anticipation of the Rotten Tomatoes score. Seems like a stinker based on that trailer…
Hey execs – you DO know that QUITE a lot of people across America do gauge which movie to see based on the RT score, don’t you? Does not matter about the franchise in every case…
This, while it may have seemed like a safe bet, is a big risk in this age of Twitter-driven reviews.
By the way, they DID change who got lost this time. Did you NOT just watch the trailer? Timmy gets lost.Doug is back with all the wives and family.
I watched the first one and found it quite hilarious. I will be seeing the second one, even if it looks a little repetitive. I am a fan of comedies, and if you can’t understand comedy, then go watch something else. No one said you HAVE to go pay 8 dollars to go see it. Thats completely your choice. Just sayin’.
The Hangover was not even close to funny. It played out like it was written by slow-witted 10th graders. Zach Galifianakis has more than worn out his one-trick-pony, serious-about-silly things brand of humor. I can’t wait till people see this crappy sequel and fucking hate it. Go waste your money on recycled garbage. I will be the one smh outside the theatre.
Wow this again looks like a lot of lame lowbrow jokes. How much more stupid and tasteless can you get ………..?
