Since Glenn Beck’s pending exit as Fox News host was announced last week, media attention has focused primarily on Judge Andrew Napolitano as a potential replacement for the 5 PM slot. Further fueling speculations, Napolitano, who has served as a guest host on the program before, was tapped to sub for Beck, who is on tour, three days this week. But Napolitano’s ratings came in below expectations. Monday through Wednesday, he averaged 1.66 million viewers, down 19% from Beck’s March average, and 345,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo, down 32% from Beck’s average. Fox News still won the hour by a comfortable margin, largely because of its overall strength throughout the day, but the network may hesitate to go with someone who drops so much from Beck’s March levels, which were already dramatically down from his heyday in the slot. Fox News is expected to continue to try out hosts. Last night, Fox News/Fox Business Network’s Eric Bolling anchored the program. Ratings for that show will be available later this afternoon.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Move Red Eye w/Greg Gutfeld to the slot. It will take off.
That show is an absolute tragic joke, even for FOX News. All they do is insult.
I have actually never seen it
but based upon its popularity it
would likely work in that time slot.
The afternoon is not 3 AM though and
it would probably have to be toned down.
Brett,
Very similar to DAILY SHOW & COLBERT REPORT, just for the right. Go RED EYE!!
And without any wit
says the guy who came to the battle of wits unarmed…..
Similar in that they are both TV shows which comment on the news. Unsimilar in that Red Eye is hilarious while Steward is unhilarious bordering on seriously unfunny.
I think Judge Napolitano is absolutely fantastic, but with his Libertarian views he might be a little bit too exotic for the Fox News viewers who are used to a more conservative POV.
He’s a Snoozefest. I champion either one of the following:
RED EYE
John Stossel OR
LOU DOBBS
Certainly Lou will beat CNN & HLN combines.
9/11 Truther, are you? Because Napolitano is. On record, on tape.
I’m familiar with Napolitano’s 9/11 comments, and I think they are completely without merit. Having said that, if we stopped listening to anyone who makes a comment with which we disagree (even vehemently), there would be no news commentary, no political discourse at all.
Hopefully, Fox News will put a real Libertarian in there, but someone who uses reason as opposed to Beck’s insane apocalyptic prophesizing and fruit cellar, Islamic caliphate, gold hoarding paranoia. The more Libertarians we see on TV the more people will realize we don’t have two parties in this country we have one big government party— 1)a Republican wing that likes endless overseas wars, deficits, assaults on civil liberties like marriage and drugs, and expanded surveillance, 2)and Democrats that like the nanny state, assaults on free enterprise and excessive taxation. (On second thought, BOTH parties like invading other countries…) Simply put, both parties want to use their power in the government to force their notion of personal behavior on the rest of us. Both sides claim belief in ‘personal freedom’ up until the point a person does something that violates the morals or values of an individual. For some it’s abortion or gay marriage, for others it’s eating fatty foods and making too much money. In both cases, groups use law as a means of forcing their moral beliefs onto other people.
Are you certain of you’re assessment of Glenn Beck? Have you looked into the information & evidence about Islamic caliphates? Are you aware that Glenn Beck was correct about the direction of Egypt, among other things?
I’d love love love for Glenn Beck to be wrong wrong wrong, but, so far, his arguments are well supported and reasonable in the current environment. Sadly, his bell ringing predections are proving true (e.g. Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt) .. stay tuned, I pray not, but you may need the information Glenn Beck is providing.
The last 3/4 of your comment is right on!
There are a lot of fans that would love to see Red Eye moved out of the unholy hours. Gutfeld is brilliantly funny – way better than Daily Show or the other one – but is he too edgy for 5 pm?
As for Napolitano – nice guy but dull. The whole problem with Beck was that he started off very sharp and entertaining and dulled down his show. You need to be extra lively to hook people at 5 pm.
I agree with John. Napolitano is a fairly odd fit for Fox and he disagrees with many of the other anchors/hosts much of the time, so I can’t imagine the bread and butter conservative/tea party/earth is flat regressives, tuning in to listen to him. Beck flared out because conservatives with a brain are tired of his craziness. Conspiracy insanity is played out and has no traction, no matter how many chalk boards you write on.
Let’s see who doesn’t run for the Presidency from the right. Fox has them all under contract already. As much as I think she’s a wingnut and probably wouldn’t want to work that hard, Palin could become a media queen for Fox. She’s gotten much more media savvy, she’s attractive, Fox would protect her and she could save herself from becoming irrelevant which she takes a chance of becoming if if she spends a boatload of money to run for the Presidency and doesn’t get the nod from the Republicans, many who hated that she took down McCain and many who hate her because she’s wrong most of the time which isn’t a crime on Fox.
Ron Paul is not under contract at Fox.
Your commentary is more the liberal crap we read in many of these threads. Name calling, vitriol, whining, hate speech. But if it comes from the ‘elite’ left it is considered in depth commentary.
-REDEYE
-Dobbs
-Megan Kelly
-Some new format roundtable. (The View, on a roller coaster, minus the hags)
Well, whoever takes the slot doesn’t have to top Beck’s RATINGS; they just need to top his PROFITABILITY- which should be easy, because no major corporation was willing to advertise on Beck anymore.
But, from a purely RATINGS standpoint, Fox would probably be smart to put on someone very UNLIKE Beck, simply because a wannabe wouldn’t please Beck’s fans OR draw in new viewers. (I know Fox THINKS they want “Glenn Beck Lite”, but that just won’t work; more than anyone else on that network, Beck was all about “personality”- people either hated him or loved him).
I agree that RED EYE needs a better time slot and more publicity by the network, but as much as I love the show, I think it might be a hard fit for a 5:00 pm time slot.
I’m hoping Megyn Kelly gets the job. She just gave birth yesterday and should be back within a few months. If they can’t work that out then my second choice is Lou Dobbs.
Personally I don’t really care for Napolitano. He’s a better analyst than host.
They should replace him with Howard Beale. Oh, wailt…
What’cha talking about Olbermann for? LOL
John Stossel and after Greta Red Eye.
Here come’s the judge!
Wait, people not only watch Red Eye but actually enjoy that show? What?
You think any host is going to the same ratings as Glenn Beck? 19 percent is not the bad, but I doubt any replacement will get anything close to Beck’s ratings, but I’m sure they’ll still be double MSNBC or CNN’s ratings at that time slot. As of now Beck has higher ratings than the combined ratings of MSNB, CNN, CNBC and CNN Headline News at the 5 PM slot.
FoxNews would have to get one of the big name free agent conservative hosts if they wanted Beck type numbers. Otherwise the new host should be on par with John Gibson’s ratings, the guy who hosted at that timeslot before Beck. Again, the noon hour Fox shows get higher ratings than anything on MSNBC or CNN on primetime.
I nominate Michael Savage, but the dictator who likes to intimidate and over-talk his guest would never permit someone much smarter to outshine him.
Dennis Miller…
Miller ! Perfect way for Miller to break into his own.
The 5 pm est slot is a loser anyway – and anyone Fox puts there will not do as well as Beck has. Beck made it his break out op – therefore use it as a break out slot for Miller.
Good one Dave
Yeah, not bad. There are a lot of guys in conservative talk radio that I’d like to see take the jump.
Its hilarious that such a highly rated tea party show like Becks is at a time of day when most people are either still at work or driving home from work. Makes you wonder if the people who watch his show are just big hypocrites. And before people bring up the DVR argument..the ratings still dont include DVR.
Ratings aren’t an issue with Fox. Whoever they put on will beat the other 3 cable news networks easily. Fox has a built in audience despite the other networks constantly attacking it.
I only watched Beck a few times on Fox. His show was completely different from when he was on Headline News. When he was on Headline News he didn’t really come across as crazy, and did some good interviews with people on all sides of issues. I don’t know if he was toned down at HLN, or if he felt he had more freedom at Fox to do whatever he wanted.
To get me to watch, it would be good if they kept Napolitano, or brought in Stossel. They are both real libertarians, not just throwing around the word like Beck did. Both have been critical of both parties, and both operate at a higher level than the “I am right, your side is wrong” nonsense that so many do. They bring up real issues of liberty and aren’t afraid to have guests on who disagree, or who others wouldn’t bring on. Napolitano had Jesse Ventura on for example. Beck would never bring him on his show I would assume.
I want Beck back. Now there’s a big hole in my day.
Failing his return, Michael Savage, or Fred Grandy.
Dr. Savage for sure. Too bad the minority shareholders (Saudis)
would never allow it, they didn’t like Beck, and you see what
happened….
Beck, speaking with a caller last week on his radio show, said straight up that he’s not going away. The lady was pretty upset about him not being on FOX, and he said, “we will be together”. He wouldn’t go into detail, but said he would be making announcements over the next few weeks as he gets his ducks in a row.
Meanwhile, you can see him on the radio …
It needs to be Red-Eye. That show is a gold mine of humor, and both conservatives and liberals can appreciate it. I think it would do very well in that time slot, and it will give FOX News a way to skewer liberals the same way The Daily Show and The Colbert Report do to conservatives.
Why not run “Red-Eye” at the 5PM slot, and repeat it at 3AM? If it works, it saves money and is a simple solution…
Mark Steyn
Mark Steyn
and above all Mark Steyn!
You don’t mind taking the bad news when it’s wrapped up in intelligence and scathing wit!
Thomas Sowell would be an ideal replacement for Glenn Beck.
King Dude, Mike Church!
Thomas Sowell is a brilliant economist, but his style doesn’t fit an everyday tv program. It would be like if Noam Chomsky did a left wing tv show. The individual might be intelligent, but you have to be entertaining as well.
