EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed Will Smith and son Jaden Smith to star in an untitled futuristic science fiction adventure film that will be directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Shymalan wrote the script with Gary Whitta, and Overbrook’s James Lassiter, Smith, Ken Stovitz and Jada Pinkett Smith will produce with Shyamalan. Shyamalan talked about the project some last fall when he was promoting The Last Airbender, when the project went under the title One Thousand A.E. Back then, Will Smith was only supposed to produce, but now he’s set to star as well. He’s currently starring in a third installment of Men in Black 3, a film that halted production for rewrites and just got started again.
The story takes place far in the future where a young boy has to navigate an abandoned planet on a space ship that has crashed. On board is his estranged father. Will and Jaden starred together in The Pursuit of Happyness at Sony Pictures. CAA repped the deal.

Will + Jaden + Shyamalan. I can’t run fast enough away from this.
Did Will Smith see, “Lady in the Water”? Shyamalan said he wrote it as a bedtime story for his kids, but it seemed more like his kids wrote it for him, instead.
Remember the days when M. Night scripts used to be printed with invisible ink and the loglines were kept completely under wraps…and then they all turned out to be craps!
Exactly! Will Smith alone, with a good script and a great director, sure, I’d be there. But add in his son and M. Night, forget it.
Does Jaden see Dead People?
At least M. Night doesn’t get sole writing credit…
Is this a sign of the apocalypse?
Haha. I literally spat out a packet of biscuits from laughing so hard at your comment. Still laughing.
Why would a mega-talent like will Smith put himself in the hands of a director who’s every film is worse than the one before? There must be only about, say, twenty A-list directors who would love to direct a Will Smith film. Why Will?
will is a mega talent? or just charismatic? i think they are perfect for each other. both believe they are much more talented than they actually are.
Agreed, it is an odd choice. The guy had one great film that made a great impression but it’s been a string of crap for the past ten years, surprising that he gets anything greenlit, much less a Will Smith pic.
Whilst I agree that M. Night has been crap for the last ten years, his films still get greenlit for one simple reason: Believe it or not, they still actually make money.

That’s right. If you click on the link, you will find something which is completely illogical, but true: Last Airbender made over $319 million worldwide.
Because those 20 A-List directors would tell Will what to do. Whereas a director desperately needing a hit like Shamalamadingdong can be “handled”.
every film was worse than the one before ??? dude go back and watch some m. knight before air bender dumbass
craptastic
Couldn’t have said it any better…
Smith’s (mostly) golden touch paired with Shyamalan’s leaden fall? This looks to answer the immovable object/irresistible force question, Hollywood style.
The Pursuit of Happyness in Space? Will it also be in 3-D? Maybe they’ll crash on Pandora and Jaden’s character sees dead people who control water, air, and whatever? I used to love M. Night Shyamalan but his last few films have been smelly air-bending bombs. I still love Will and Jaden. I hope this new film will bring out the best in all of these people
Couldn’t have been said any better or funnier. Still laughing from reading your comments.
Avatar (not Airbender) was James Cameron…not sure if you were trying to keep true to Shyamalan movies or not. Mayhaps they crash into a very large reserve with a small village?
The corporatism of culture extends in Hollywood + nepotism. You want to say your happy for them but then again – how hard is it when you can get any meeting in town at any time and dream about anything and have anyone pay up to see those dreams happen. It’s just blah for some reason. Am I crazy?
Your comment is very true, but I am also wondering why these people, in particular (the Smiths), get all the work. They are really hard-pimping their kids to get into Hollywood and manufacturing their “brand.”
Q: Why do they get so much work?
A: Because they can deliver box-office. I think Jayden Smith’s 2 movies grossed $500m+ worldwide.
and P.S.
when was the last time M. Night made a movie worth going “wow” about? Oh yeah, the first one that was the kid that saw dead people. All the rest? Forgettable, they might have had “solid” openings, some were piss poor films, like awful, but every time these films came out they had a mega-Hollywood-marketing-campaign behind them and we distributed WIDE.
Will Smith’s involvement is the best thing that could have happened to this dude. Kind of like Bruce Willis in 6th Sense.
lady in the water was pretty decent stop bashing the dude can you direct??
amen! m. night is a great director. period.
We know it is now the Smith family saga when it comes to filmmaking.
The family choice to have M.Night direct anything is at best…RISKY.
Good luck to the Smiths.
Danger Will Robinson! Danger! Danger! Will Smith and his son Jaden are coming to this planet with M. Night Shamalamdingdong! They are doing their own version of Lost in Space!
Oh woe is me! Woe is me! Where is Dr. Smith? Where did he go? He is no relation to Will Smith but a Smith is a Smith correct?
I am all alone on this forsaken planet the Robinsons left me here and soon the new Smiths will arrive with that crazy director.
Will Night he give me a part in the movie? I am a very capable robot I follow directions well. Danger! Danger! Oh woe is me.
YIPPEE!! Well..it’s guaranted another bomb from M. Knight. But will it be a big enough bomb so we don’t have to be subjected to these Smith kids for too many more years? I have my fingers and eyes crossed!!!
There are times where nepotism has paid off. The offspring are really talented. These are not the times. Jaden is wooden as they come. Absolutely no personality. Comes into a room thinking people will like him because the execs. have to in order to keep working with Will.
Will Smith is a great talent. He’s funny, charming, cute can act pretty well. His son lacks all those qualities and if he’s putting his son out there then it is our right to comment.
Sorry, but too many offspring with too many opportunities.
M. Night – he’s a talent. This is not boxing where you are only as good as your last fight. When he wrote Sixth Sense you all licked his vomit you were so proud. So he’s done some less than Sixth Sense work. It hasn’t all be that bad. Some has been okay. Why don’t you look to the writers and directors you hire who have done nothing of quality and still get the best gigs. Now that is nepotism and that is bullshit.
Thank you.
M. Night has _been_ needing to either do someone else’s script or adapt books. Insisting on being an auteur has not done him any favors, to say the least. And his talent for the eerie would be perfect for any horror/science-fiction/steampunk novelist you can name.
Will Smith has conquered everything in showbiz (movies, music, tv) except direct-to-video. Working with M. Night gives him his shot. Winning!
I hope this film is a hit, only because I’m tired of seeing white men succeed in Hollywood. A high profile project where all the major players are of color will do this overwhelmingly white industry some good.
hate to wake up from your (racist) dream but some key players will always be white in big projects. that is just math.
Bingo.
You’re totally right; let’s keep our fingers crossed that this is the hit that helps Will Smith and family break the color barrier in Hollywood.
Haha. Perfect.
The Smith’s know no boundaries as they drown their children in the spoils and entitlement of Hollywood excess and banner waving nepotism.
Hey Will and Jada, just because you CAN doesn’t mean you SHOULD. What a child WANTS isn’t what a child NEEDS and Hollywood is a big toy store of hollow affirmation play things. It’s called limits/structure. Look into it.
Thank you. Why isn’t this something more people are talking about?
Best post I’ve read all day.
JJ – I must have missed your earlier post about you being in the business of raising other people’s kids. I’m sure you know what’s best for Will and his family. Hopefully you’re providing that same advice to all the other kid stars out there in hollywood like Chloe Moretz. Who by the way happened to kill, torture and stab over 50+ men and women in her last two movies. All at the tender age of 12.
All you people co-signing this inane post are worst than the inane poster himself.
Will & Jada aren’t just handing their kids money like the Hiltons of the world. They’re making them earn it. They go to school and WORK for their money, something I seriously doubt you did when you were 9-13. What exactly is wrong with that? Jaden pushed himself mentally and physically for Karate Kid and it paid off.
Yet this is something to be criticized?
Far in the future, a young boy born and raised in West Philadelphia has to defend the playground where he spends most of his days from a couple of guys who were up to no good
And started making trouble in his neighborhood. He got in one little fight and his mom got scared, sent him to live with his aunty and uncle in Bel Air.
Dear Captain Obvious, Thanks for sucking the life out of that joke.
So M. Night is hoping Will Smith can take the stink off him? This pic will prove if Smith is indeed teflon and bad movies can truly bounce off him.
Seven Pounds proved they can’t…
How Night gets his movies greenlit is a mystery to me. So sad that there are so many film makers out there whose scripts/film ideas will never get made because people like this one-hit wonder keep making big budget stinkers.
This must be an incredible script. I am shocked that Will Smith would subject himself to M Knight’s direction considering his recent track record.
This is why I laugh when people say that you should take projects to Overbrook. That company is strictly based around Will and his family. They don’t have time for your outside projects. At least people will finally realize this.
Night let someone read a script he wrote?
Fucking unbelievable!
*shrugging*
what could possibly go wrong?
Good. Maybe this will be the end of all three of them.
Please let this be THE HAPPENING 2! That has to happen!
I would go see The Happening 2, but only if it’s 90 minutes of Betty Buckley bashing her head against a brick wall.
…or 90 minutes of the fake-est ramming-a-car-into-a-tree action ever…;) It’s really a shame about THE HAPPENING–someone like Roy Ward Baker or Val Lewton could have made that premise seriously scary.
That. Just. Happeninged.
