EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed Will Smith and son Jaden Smith to star in an untitled futuristic science fiction adventure film that will be directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Shymalan wrote the script with Gary Whitta, and Overbrook’s James Lassiter, Smith, Ken Stovitz and Jada Pinkett Smith will produce with Shyamalan. Shyamalan talked about the project some last fall when he was promoting The Last Airbender, when the project went under the title One Thousand A.E. Back then, Will Smith was only supposed to produce, but now he’s set to star as well. He’s currently starring in a third installment of Men in Black 3, a film that halted production for rewrites and just got started again.
The story takes place far in the future where a young boy has to navigate an abandoned planet on a space ship that has crashed. On board is his estranged father. Will and Jaden starred together in The Pursuit of Happyness at Sony Pictures. CAA repped the deal.

Why Hollywood why? I love the Smiths but Shyamalan? Was winning Worst Picture of the Year not enough to prove this guy is done for? Signs was his last significant film and he has made one bad movie after another. Dumb, just dumb.
Those who know more will correct me, but I believe M.Night Shyamalan has access to significant funding of Indian origin. I am guessing that funding is maybe now wanting to see a return on its investment following the cruel and unusual punishment that was The Last Airbender. As for who wears the pants, better yet, cracks the whip in the Smith-Shyamalan partnership, that’s a no-brainer. But just because people have great affection, respect even, for Will Smith doesn’t mean that holds true for the kid as well. I am with JJ above: limits and boundaries are sorely needed here. But even if other people lose a lot of money, the Smiths will have secured themselves very nicely whatever happens.

No worries Reliance is an obedient puppy that barks when CAA wants. Smith will get paid, Shyamalan will get paid a bit less, and another dummy investor in Hollywood will get the shaft.
Well I will watch it since I love science fiction movies and TV shows. But seriously – they should not let Shyamalan write script. He would be a good director when he will shoot the movie by other people’s script.

Yes in Hollywood M.Night Shyamalan is on a self destruction path by having films that suck. Middle america still think M.Night Shyamalan is the shit. Will Smith knows that, If you guys think one of the highest payed actors doesn’t realize that M.Night Shyamalan’s movies suck. Then your crazy. my parents who live in the midwest arent going to talk about how bad “the happening ” was their going to talk about how good the “i see dead people ” movie was. People love Will Smith, i don’t know yet my opinions on Jaden & Willow i think Will & Jada can keep them grounded.

I would bet my back teeth that M. Night doesn’t have final cut on this one. He’ll be the director but Will Smith will get the ultimate say. No doubt the entire thing has been extensively story-boarded and no deviations will be accepted, a bit like Hitchcock but with the producer in charge, or else no way would Smith have signed on. Look, this could work. Viewers have been saying for years that Shyamalan has fallen for his own hype. He’s a talented guy with an enormous ego to match and he desperately needs somebody big enough to tell him when his work sucks, because he seems to have no self-awareness at all. That College Humor sketch was spot-on. I’m completely sick of the kid though, isn’t he way too young for all this attention?
If Jaden was even somewhat genuinely cool and likeable, it would be one thing, but the kid acts as though it’s a complete given that we all simply must hand him our respect and admiration. In other words, yuck.
I hear Jaden is the screenwriter on Men in Black III!
Regardless of M.Night’s past failures, Will Smith + sci-fi + special EFX = blockuster. This film should be interesting especially since its new material. The only thing I see hurting this pic is Men In Black 3. If that tanks, then Will maybe knocked down a notch or two.
Can SOMEBODY tell me what J. Smith has done to tee so many of you off? It must be pretty bad for you to be so angry at a 12 year old. And saying that he is trading on his family/connections is pretty vague because EVERYBODY from movies to widget manufacturing trades on their connections. Give me something SPECIFIC.
Any and every interview he’s been in. Particularly with Jackie Chan. He’s “playful” with Jackie Chan but it is REALLY disrespectful the things he says and does.
The problem is, he tries TOO hard to be cute and charming like his dad and say those super confident things, but he doesn’t realize that coming from the mouth of a 12 year old, it comes off as arrogance and conceit. Plus, because he is 12, he doesn’t yet understand the humility Will brings to an interview, even when he says things like “yeah, I can be the president if I wanted too.” With Will, you believe him, because he has that sense of humility. It shows when he defers to his wife or take a back seat in his career to push his wife and kids.

I read elsewhere that this movie takes place not on another planet but on earth after an apocalypse. So it’s basically I Am Legend with some Mad Max Road Warrior and The Postman and Planet of the Apes thrown in for good measure. Cheer up everyone, when the USA falls apart a thousand years from now and everyone dies from the bio-warfare germs and radioactive fallout we can take solace in the fact that Will and Jaden are going to still be here to make things right again with M. Night telling them how to react.

I don’t understand the constant browbeating of Will Smith’s kid. He’s not great, but he’s got charisma and did a decent job in the “Karate Kid” reboot. It’s like y’all are surprised that there’s nepotism in the industry.

Re: M. Night. I saw The Happening and The Village, and I don’t see the problem. I even saw Devil, which he produced, that wasn’t bad either. The only real flop he’s got to his name is Airbender, IMO.
There are some names where a few peeps bitch and then people think it’s open season. Tom Cruise is just coming out of such a phase where everybody piled on him even though his movies made money (like MI:3).
Then again maybe a brown guy with a funny name needs to be put in his place?
