EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Mandler has been set to direct Die In A Gunfight for Media Rights Capital, the Gabriel Ferrari/Andrew Barrer-scripted film that has Zac Efron attached to star. Mark Gordon is producing with Jennifer Todd. Mandler, a photographer, music video and commercial director, is separately attached to direct Vlad at Summit Entertainment, with Plan B producing. UTA and Management 360 reps the director. The scribes wrote Die In A Gunfight right out of NYU, and it made the 2010 Black List. Efron is attached to play a fight-prone and death-obsessed young society man who pursues a romance with the daughter of his father’s enemy.

Girls think Zac is too feminine & pretty. He should just do musicals.
I don’t think they do, a lot recognise his potential and his talent. Do not judge people with the same measure.
This girl agrees.
i’m sure it’ll look good, but audiences demand good story-telling more than visuals today. hopefully, mandler has the chops to add dimension to the film. i’m kinda over the “let’s hire a commercial director cause it’s cool agenda”. i’m much more interested in people who can deliver smart sophisticated storytelling that makes you care about the characters. i’d rather see studios taking chances with “old timers” than “first timers”.
couldn’t agree more. just because you’ve directed Rhianna and Beyonce based on a treatment doesn’t mean you can direct a picture. How many commercial directors out there actually translate to good storytellers – minus catfood blomkamp – not many. Mandler does wear a nice Hasidic hat though as a fashion statement, so that makes him hip. way hip.
Yeah it’s a shame they let Blomkamp have a shot with that film sinec he’s only a commercial director. It didn’t even get nominated for Best Pic-oh, wait…what was my confused argument again?
You’re kidding right? If you take the time to watch any of Mandler’s videos, you’ll see he’s a great storyteller. Every one of his videos is a mini-movie.
like Fincher? like Lawerence? Verbinski?
Like the Scotts? Ridley AND Tony… Right, Right. Right you are. What a friggin’ maroons, gstar and Ashley. Sheesh. What are you both twelve?
and Jonze? and Gondry? and Romanek?
I agree that we need story more than visuals and that has been problematic in recent cinema. But old timers can screw up just as badly as first timers. Or sometimes it is just sell-out. Do I even need to name examples?
No matter where they come from or how old they are we need smart and sophisticated storytellers both in the form of better directors and better writers.
Some great commercial directors probably cannot handle the larger scope and duration of a feature film. But that doesn’t mean any should be ruled out automatically because certainly some will excel.
I assume these fights that the character is so “prone” to are over who stole his mascara and tanning oil? If not, I suggest a massive, page-one rewrite, pronto!
I think its a great way to showcase efron’s talent. Liked him in 17 again before which i thought he was another pretty face. I hope the director does justice to the plot coz it seems the plot is good one since it was black listed in 2010 and efron is a good find.
He has stopped doing musicals since 2008 and girls think he is handsome guys think he is feminine. And zac was amazing in csc.
1. Girls want to see this kid in romantic films and musicals. They will not travel into a male-targeted/violent movie to catch a glimpse of a kid they can see pictures of all over the web.
2. Men– like me and every guy I know– couldn’t care less about this kid. In fact we will choose to steer clear of him in a movie such as this one. I can’t respect a kid I can break in two over my knee.
The Bottom Line – I’m a 31 year old petite heterosexual female, and *I* could break this height-challenged poof-boy in half.
Efron has his niche – after all, somebody has to star in maudlin treacle Nicholas Sparks-genre pablum – Efron might as well bank some earnings before his looks give out.
Mouse,
The real Bottom Line is that you are awesome.
Please take your brain and install it in every woman you know.
Wait… is there a high concept there?
Best,
TBL
Mandler is amazing. He has done some amazing work in the past, and he one of the next big helmers of feature films. G Star you obviously dont know whom or what your talking about. Do a little research on people before you start making ignorant comments. What? You want Randal Kleiser to come ride his white pony off of Grease to direct again? C’mon man. Get with it!
RH
Romeo and Juliet. Starring Zach Efron. Way to go Hollywood.
Speaking of Mandler, how’s Vlad looking these days?
OMG a director is attached to a film that hasn’t gotten made yet. He must suck. Good snark ttol!
I am excited- not
should be alden ehrenreich
Don’t really care for him as an actor, not really impressed. An it’s not because I’m jealous, there a billion people richer, better looking, and more popular than I am
I know he’s trying hard to become the
Next Leo, but I really think he should stick to becoming the next Mathew MacCougnehey(I couldn’t bother looking it up). It will work for him.
So why don’t you go and post comments on the posts of one of those billion richer blah blah…and leave him to the people who care abt him ,recognize his potential including the critics. Also what is trying hard in doing movies?? Thats his job he is an actor.,besides he is 100 times better than u and doesn’t even know you and u are actually taking time to post a comment abt him when u openly say u don’t care.
