This year’s “Produced By Conference” from June 3rd to 5th at Walt Disney Studios is finally helping filmmakers: for the first time it will provide access to more than 300 film commissions from 6 continents and 40 countries who have real funds and tax incentives to get projects made. No other conferenc has ever collected $2 billion in available development funds and incentives. It’s the ultimate Hollywood hook-up. You need the Alamo in your film? San Antonio Film Commission can get it for you. In Sweden it takes literally one phone call to close a street. In Scotland you can shoot there without permits. Other countries repped include Panama, Fiji, Morocco, Kenya, Iceland, Namibia, Abu Dhabi, Japan (critical for them to get business back there), Serbia, Czech Republic, Uruguay, and of course numerous cities in the U.S. This year’s ‘Produced By’ Conference is organized with The Association of Film Commissioners International, the non-profit and official professional organization for film commissioners who assist film, television and video production throughout the world. Meanwhile, this year’s panels topics include New distribution models, VOD, global finance options, micro-budget features, digital cameras, etc. Here’s the intel:

Actually, the Locations tradeshow has been doing this for the last several years in Santa Monica for free. Now they’ve rolled it into the Produced By conference so you have to pay the fee for that show, even if you just want to talk to the film commission guys. Not seeing the upside there.
The upside is for the Film Comm’s.
The Locations show is a huge failure for them.
It does not deliver a qualified Hollywood audience for the Commissioners.
The only people the Comm’s want to talk with are real Producers and Location managers.
The rest of the wanna-be’s that show up at industry events like Locations and ShowBiz Expo only because it’s free do not bring any value to their vendor’s.
The whole morph is a fiasco. Location scouts are not going to pay to attend this thing. Some studio based physical production personnel and independent personnel may attend, but I think the FCs will see a drastically reduced level of interaction. They should have continued AFCI but charged enough of a fee to keep out the lookie-loos. Honestly, 25.00 probably would have done it.
I’m not a big fan of producers, but this seems like fun. Just wish there weren’t going to be so many producers there.
..thought we were trying to keep production ‘home’…no mention of section 181..???
Agreed, RandyV. The location expo in Santa Monica was a fantastic way to meet w/ various film commissions, but now that they’ve rolled it into the Produced By Conference, I have no interest in paying $595 to meet w/ people, who are actually looking for MY business.
If you are a member of the PGA you get to go for $295. Affiliate Partners are priced at $495. How can you be a producer and not be a member of at least on of those groups?
Location Expo obviously joined up with the conference because the members were tired of having to talk to people like you who come for free but don’t have any business to give.
There is also a great thing called the internet that you can use for free to contact the film commissions you are interested in talking to.
Why don’t you just post by an appropriate name like Pompous Dickhead Producer-boy? RicB, who while not me, seems like a reasonable, thoughtful guy who might possibly be an indie producer who may or may not belong to any of those groups. You know, producers who might be on a tighter budget that doesn’t really allow for paying to talk to film commissions and listen to pontificating by, oh I don’t know, pompous dickhead producers.
This is the most expensive networking ticket in town. Forget the content…as it is mostly producers blowing smoke up their own asses…and, Location Expo adds more attendees so both events appear to be bigger. Both, also, have trouble existing alone…
The choice is simple…is it worth $500 plus…and, only those who attend can honestly answer this question.
You can tell the interest level of DH readers is quite small as normally there are very few comments on any announcements/stories about this event when posted on DH.
Thanks for pointing out that I can use the internet and phone system to get the info re: locations and incentives. Yes, I can spend days leaving messages and waiting for return calls from various state and regional film commissions until I eventually talk to the right person…orrrrr, I can swing by the free annual locations expo and talk to everyone that I want in a matter of two hours. This is one instance in which attending a convention that is in my “backyard” is much quicker than hours of research online, which begets days of trading phone calls. And at the trade show, if I have a question, there’s a person facing me that can answer that question right away. So whether it’s $595 or a discounted $295, I still find it annoying that someone wants to charge me for information on how I can spend money in their state.
Wow. How much did they ‘Produced By’ pay to get that endorsement?
