HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 19, 2011) – Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment jointly announced today that James Cameron’s “TITANIC” will be re-released worldwide on April 6, 2012.
The release, which marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail (April 10th), will present the film in 3D for the first time ever.
Written, directed and produced by Cameron, “TITANIC” is the second highest grossing movie of all time. It is one of only three films to have received a record 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director; and launched the careers of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
Called “A spectacular demonstration of what modern technology can contribute to dramatic storytelling” by Variety upon its release in 1997, the long in the works 3D conversion is being overseen by Cameron and his Lightstorm producing partner Jon Landau who produced the hit movie.
Said Cameron, “There’s a whole generation that’s never seen ‘TITANIC’ as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be ‘TITANIC’ as you’ve never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike.”
“This new presentation of Paramount’s top-grossing film is particularly special because 2012 is the 100th anniversary of our studio. Paramount has had the pleasure of introducing audiences to some of the all-time classics of cinema during that century of moviemaking and we cannot think of a better way to mark the occasion than with this re-release of ‘TITANIC’,” said Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures.
Commented Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairmen and CEOs, Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman: “Our 30-plus year relationship with Jim Cameron and Lightstorm has been enormously rewarding, from ‘Aliens’ to ‘Avatar’, and the global phenomenon of ‘TITANIC’ remains one of the greatest sources of pride in our history. We are pleased to allow a new generation of audiences to experience the film in its brilliant digital restoration in 3D.”

Can’t wait! Titanic is still my favorite movie and The 3D conversion will be awesome!
This makes me sick to my stomach. Cameron is essentially cashing in on a human tragedy. Titanic is one of the top 10 worst films ever made and this re-release is insulting to those who perished.
a majority would say it is one of the best films ever made — it was the largest grossing movie of all time before avatar. It is a tribute to those lives that were lost, not insulting. But you have your opinion.
By your logic every film is an exploitation of some kind. People die from bullets, car wrecks and natural causes everyday. Tragedy is simply part of the human experience, get over yourself. Boo-hoo my girlfriend broke up with me, my puppy died, I got fired, no more milk in the fridge?! Tragic indeed. Are these off limits as well?
By your logic every film ever made is an exploitation of some kind. People get shot, people die in car accidents, people fall off of ladders, people die of heart attacks, it’s part of being human. Boo-Hoo, my girlfriend broke up with me, my puppy died, I got fired today, there no more milk in the fridge?!?!
Tragic indeed.
Try not to be so jealous. Like him or not, like his films or not, Cameron makes movies that sell lots of tickets, get over it. I’m pretty it’s not just Cameron driving this boat to re-release either, you narrow minded doof.
It’s obviously not one of the top 10 worst films…so that’s a silly comment.
But…re-release on the sinking’s anniversary is rather crass.
It sank on April 15th, not April 6th.
If you would just read before writing you would know that was near the set sail date… I happen to be a Titaniac that feels that the movie in all of it’s splendor has shown millions of people of the very tradgedy of what happened to “see, feel and hear”. There were many books written and movies made, but never before in such a real way. I plan on celebrating next April in every way I can to remember the great tradgedy and all of the people that lived and died on that day/days…It colided on April 14th finally went down on April 15th. A funeral that we have for loved ones is a celebration of their lives, and that is what I will be doing as I fress in the period and dine in a wonderful hotel, celebrate the lives….maybe you should rent one of the Titanic films and re-think the release…Maybe read about some of the people, survivors as well as the deaths. Truly some great history lessons for you to have and share with others, friends, chidren or grandchildren. I say all of this with caring …
I know, right? That like sick jerk Steven Spielberg, who tried to cash in on those 6 million Holocaust victims.
Or that bastard Roberto Begnini, who literally made a comedy out of it. Disgusting.
I guess you and I know these two are going straight to hell, right?
Let me guess, the 1953 melodrama however, honoured them? How about the 1996 mini-series? Or the upcoming 2012 mini-series also timed for the anniversary? Will it?
Titanic has been pillaged for entertainment like every other big tragedy in history.
Nice try though.
So by your logic, any movie made about the Civil War, World War II, ect, any tragedy ever, should not have a movie made about it…yeah…ok…rainbows and unicorns it is then. *rolls eyes* While I probably wont see it in theaters, Im fine with the release of Titanic. Its almost surprising they hadnt done it sooner.
i agree James is cashing in on the biggest passenger ship tragedy during peace time
can’t wait to see if the deluxe blue ray 3-D set comes with a drowned baby action figure that floats and sinks every 5 minutes.
And so anything about the Bible must make you sick to your stomach because that book is nothing but tragedy, genocide, evil, stoning, and hate. So basically everything to you is off-limits unless it is completely fiction, huh? Oh, that’s going to make for an interesting life.
I have less of a problem watching movies about tragedies inflicted on mankind by mother nature, and more dissgust over STUPID SHIT like turning car repo’s into a game show.
What?…. “Human tragedy”…. Some people’s interpretations of this film is completely crazy. This film shows an interpretation of an event in world history. Apparently someone is out of touch with reality, since this film is one of the most successful films in history to date. If you don’t agree then “Don’t see it!!” Keep in mind, the story line as far as we know is factitious. The fact is that many people did die when the Titanic sank, however most people will agree that this film pays tribute to those that have lost their lives.
Excuse me, Who the hell you think you are dealing with!
Cameron is the Theatre leader and he always will stay on the top of all movies.
TITANIC will be a success, That is granted.
ummm…. you are like the only person who has said its the worst film ever made! you obviously dont know what an awesome unforgettable film is! This is the most succesful film of all time and your saying its the worst film ever made!? sorry but you are wrong!
Which anniversary is tragic?
The sinking of the Titanic or the founding of Paramount.
Just asking.
When Titanic came out, it was an event. You had to see it. And people liked and loved it for different reasons. I think by now Titanic is a movie you’re a bit ashamed of having seen it, let alone owning the dvd. Generally speaking. It declined in popularity by a great deal, I think.
However it seems it’s James Cameron’s most beloved movie (maybe apart from Avatar), but I don’t think anyone’s waiting to see it again/for the first time on the big screen. 3D or otherwise.
I disagree. Just the other I night I said to some of my friends how much I would love to see it on the big screen again. They all agreed. Opening night, baby!
There’s a whole generation that doesn’t need to see Titanic, 3-D or otherwise.
Calling a decade old movie “restored” is asinine. It would be a fitting tribute if this movie finally sank 3-D.
I love all of Cameron’s works but have never seen Titanic nor his Pirahna film. Well I don’t know how much of the latter is really his film sice I think he quit or was fired. Anyway I will use this opportunity to catch Titanic for the first time when it’s re-released, hopefully in an I-Max screen
Wasn’t Cameron one of the loudest critics bemoaning the conversion of films not shot in 3D to 3D? What a dick.
Won’t this 3D scam just go away?
Cameron was critical on films that converted to 3D on the cheap side. He was not critical of those films that took the time and care to do it properly. Instead of spouting off about something you’re clearly wrong about, think twice and still keep your mouth shut.
Titanic came out 14 years ago and James Cameron is still milking it. Until recently, he was still milking Avatar as well. Anyone who goes to see this is living in the past.
He has got to be the greediest man in Hollywood. All those billions of dollars are not enough for him and he is still not satisfied.
You don’t see Nolan and Abrams milking Batman and Star Trek.
Nolan isn’t milking Batman, then tell me what’s the next movie he’s currently filming, and as for Abrams what movie is he getting ready to start shooting?
Well he obviously took lessons from Lucas.
You are joking right?!
Titanic is my all time favorite movie and I am so excited for the re-release.
The second person has no heart
Hey anonymous: TITANIC is a an academy award winning masterpiece that until recently was the highest grossing movie ever made; only to be unseated by Cameron’s own 3-d game-changer AVATAR. Take ur bitterness to some site like hollywood elesewhere and enjoy ur day job at the soon to be out of business bookstore.
“Titanic” — like Cameron’s other films — advance the art and science of filmmaking. Period. Get over it. Plus this is a more brilliant and clever film than the nay-sayers will ever realize, even as to what they perceive as its shortcomings. Further evidence that Cameron et al know what they’re doing is that it’s being released on the anniversary of the sailing, not the sinking. Plus, c’mon, don’t you want to see the guy hit the propeller in 3D?
Titanic is a horrible movie. When I watched it, I spent nearly the entire time wishing both main characters would die. They were that awful. How did this stinking piece of junk ever win Best Picture and all those other awards? It’s terrible.
Dear Gagging, I couldn’t agree with you more. The friend I saw “Titanic” with was as bored as I was and, after 2 hours, we were ready to leave. Then we decided to stay to the bitter end, hoping at least the last hour when the ship sank would knock us out of our seats with mind-blowing special effects. Hardly, the CGI effects were so tacky and fake-looking they made the forgotten 1953 20th Century-Fox black-and-white feature about the same subject look like a masterpiece–the minatures used for the climax were far superior, the script literate, and the superb performances by Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck, a 22-yeard old extraordinarily-handsome newcomer Robert Wagner et all made the movie a heartbreaking tragedy and did it in a swift hour-and-a half (exactly half the running time of Cameron’s bloated 3 hour disaster). Two fatal script deficiencies no on else has mentioned: why, at the end, does Gloria Stuart toss that expensive bauble overboard? It’s hardly a gesture of her love for her long-deceased young lover since it was given to her by her much-hated, villainous fiance (with Billy Zane doing everything but snarl like a rabid dog to convey his character’s vileness). And there was more than enough room to accommodate Leonardo DiCaprio on Kate Winslet’s raft. The layers of petticoats, ruffles and Victorian finery she was wearing must have weighed a ton! Instead of weeping and moaning goodbye to poor Leo as he slowly drifted away in the freezing waters, why didn’t the dumb bitch strip down to her underwear (she still could have preserved her modesty, while poor Leo climbed aboard). The fact that this insaanely overrated tripe is now being re-released in 3-D just proves what a fraud its maker James Cameron really is. The earlier version was released in 1953, the year 3-D movies were at the height of their popularity , but Fox saw no reason to film it in that process. Cameron’s decision to unleash his hit yet again in the “converted-to-3-D” process he has already gone on record as hating is all too obvious: simply to squeeze more millions from the moviegoing public he obviously regards as gullible fools. Stay away!
Too soon?
I wish people would stop spreading the myth that this film is the second highest grosser, it isn’t. You must factor in inflation – there were million upon million more people who went to see films like Gone with the Wind and Star Wars than Cameron’s films. If inflation is adjusted, I don’t think he’s even in the top ten.
Can’t wait for World Trade Center and United 93 in 3D in a few years!!!
Outstanding. Brilliant. Cameron’s core competencies still ablaze. I love it. bb
Terrific! What’s next? A 3-D reissue of “Schindler’s List” or “The Pianist” on Holocaust Remembrance Day? Or how about a 3-D version of “United 93″ or “World Trade Center” released on the 10th anniversary of 9/11? I’m with you, Anonymous. This is one shitbag move by Paramount, Fox and Cameron.
Lighten up, Francis!
IT WILL BE INTERESTED TO SEE HOW LONG AFTER THE 3D MOVIES IS RELEASED WHEN WILL THE 3DDVD WILL BE AVAILABLE. I GOT A FEELING I WILL BE ONE OF FAN WILL SEE THE MOVIE AND BUY THE DVD. GOOD LUCK TO THE FUTURE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
James Cameron is overrated I don’t care what you fan boys say .. why re-release this in 3D?!? Money is the root of all Evil and this bastard is evil. Avatar is was shittiest movie ever made. nuff said
*Love of* money is the root of all evil. Get your pretentious quotes right when you’re trying to blast someone.
Really?! THIS makes you “sick” to your stomach?! Did you have to run to the restroom half way through reading this post, because you couldn’t stomach reading about a movie that was already released more than a decade ago?
It’s funny that Paramount states Titanic is their highest grossing film of all time when all they did was come in and help Fox when Fox got worried if the film flopped it would cripple them. They had nothing to do with the movie or its creative process.
You’re absolutely right. But they did make $600 million out of it. I guess that makes them the smartest guys in the room. Doing absolutely nothing and making every domestic penny of the highest grossing film ever? I wish people laughed at ME for that!
Didn’t like the movie when I first saw and will sure as heck not be buying its DVD. I also see this as another money making ploy studios use to make money without being original. Remastering old movies, making books into films, sequels, and remakes of old classics all fall into the laziness arena.
People seem to forget that a Star Wars prequel is going to be released 2 months prior in 3D which will definitely drain interest. Cameron doesn’t have a shot in hell of making coin on this turkey. Maybe 10 million at the b.o. And I’m just being nice for that estimate.
Umm hate to break it to you, you will be sorely disappointed. The movie will make money, though it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, many people love it. And I highly doubt the star wars movies will “drain interest” for titanic, they are in no way targeted at the same audience.
I think the Star Wars rereleases were the exception to the rule. Look at other hugely popular classics that were rereleased for their 20th anniversaries:
Grease in 1998 — $28 million
E.T. in 2002 — $35 million
Titanic was the most popular film of all time, but all these years later, it doesn’t have the kind of fanatic support of Star Wars. I believe we’re looking at perfectly decent, but fairly modest release here. $50 million tops.
