UPDATED: What an appropriate title this turned out to be! Despite soft ratings for its midseason freshman run, ABC’s comedy Happy Endings will come back next season after the network just renewed it. This is not a surprise as the ensemble relationship comedy has had big support internally at the network. But while the Happy Endings producers at Sony TV are celebrating, the renewal was not
good news for Fox’s newly picked up comedy series New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel. Damon Wayons Jr. was one of the co-stars in the pilot (I hear he was quite good in it), but his casting was in second position to Happy Endings, where he is also one of the leads. Now he will return to the ABC series, and the 20th TV-produced New Girl will to recast his role. UPDATE: As a commenter pointed out, Happy Endings‘ co-star Adam Pally also did a pilot in second position, NBC’s BFFs, which also will have to recast his role. The dangers of second-position casting …

This show is clever, hysterical, and the characters are INCREDIBLY likable. NICE!!!!
I agree. This is a smartly-written show with likable characters and a great cast. I just hope they give it a better time slot next season.
Happy Endings RULE!!! I love Penny!!!
Awesome news! This is a genuinely hilarious show that could really click with the public more widely than it already has… Now ABC just has to give it a better slot and some marketing.
The show is funny but, I need to see more black women in their world! I am not alone in feeling that way. Therefore, if I don’t see it, I’m out. Sorry.
There’s a black man (in an accepted interracial marriage), a gay man and a mixture of different women and men on there, but that’s still not good enough for you…and the other people you reference in your post, of course. I mean, for real, when will it ever be enough?
I think they need someone that is an addiction recovering black-irish that lost both legs in ‘the troubles’ and is therefore wheelchair bound or I’m not watching either!
This was sarcasm. I love the show.
Nice job Angela and Steve, Tri-Five!
I totally agree with you. As a black woman myself, I am sick and tired of seeing the lack of Black women on tv in a positive light.
Why not instead of focusing on whether the person is black, white, asian, or mexican look at the fact if they fit in the role. I’m tired of this crap that there’s not enough of these people or that messsage is brought up enough. This is what the show is about and it is great, deal with it.
Would it be so hard if you would try to understand where people were coming from before you tried to shot them down? You take it for granted that you see yourself represented in a show that you like and can relate to. I really don’t see anything wrong with others asking for the same thing.
@Lindsay..

Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy is a BAMF. She compensates for a lot of other shows simply by being herself. She’s brilliant, talented, respected, in a competitive and high paying career. Win.
There aren’t any Hispanics either. Maybe a successful hispanic for a change…
I’m still watching it though.
Great people, great show! awesome for everyone truly happy here!
WOOOO HOOOOO!!!! SUCH A GREAT DECISION!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not the greatest comedy out there, but it does have its moments. Looking forward to Season 2.
It really isn’t a bad show for a mid-season replacement. Sad that it didn’t work out for Matthew Perry though.
Me liking that
YES! PLEEEEEEEASE move it to a better time and give this show a shot. 10pm is not the comedy hour folks (just ask NBC).
Good for them! It’s not a great show but it’s entertaining and hopefully will get even better now that they’ve been given a second chance.
In the words of Penny Hart uh-maz-ing!
Yes!!! Yes!!! Uh-mah-zing!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!
Yes. Uh-mah-zing!!!
This show and ‘Cougar Town’ fit like a glove out of eachother. Excellent cast.
Also to be recast, Adam Pally on “BFFs”.
YAY!!!!! Soooo happy about this! It CAN be the next Friends if given a shot. What a funny show, great voice, great cast – my new favorite comedy along with Raising Hope. Thank you, ABC for giving it another chance!!!!
Fox…take a lesson from ABC…and give Breaking In another shot!
It’s a good show, but it has zero chance to be the next FRIENDS. It’s a single-camera show with an overly “sophisticated” (and therefore alienating) visual style. If a network wants to make the next FRIENDS they need to shoot it like FRIENDS, with the studio audience.
I still find it weird NBC and ABC are still chasing the next FRIENDS without realizing that a single-camera show can’t be it.
When people say it’s the next FRIENDS, no one means copy it exactly and expect people to like it. People mean that they feel between the characters are great and that they have good chemistry and interactions in the way they deliver their lines and interact with each other through their actings, like those on FRIENDS.
Why would someone want to recreate a show in its exact duplication and expect the public to receive well to it?? Why does camera works matter when people are talking about the chemistry between characters??
T’Rank is what is wrong with the television world. “overly sophisticated” like its a bad thing smh. C’mon dude, if they never make another studio audience comedy it will be too soon. I don’t need an applause sign to tell me when to laugh at a fart joke.
This is great news! They just need to find a better time slot for it and really promote it. I think it should be paired to Cougar Town on another night.
I’m glad ABC is giving this show a chance, but hope they’ll move it to a better timeslot in the fall. In my opinion, it’s their funniest comedy and I’d like to see it given a chance to find a wider audience.
ABC hasn’t been able launch a successful show in their Wednesday 10 PM slot in quite some time; it’s like the death slot on their schedule.
Hopefully they’ll move Happy Endings and Cougar Town to Tuesdays at 9:00 and 9:30, move Private Practice to the Wednesday 10:00 slot (it loses a lot of its lead-in but has a solid enough base that will likely follow it to another night), then use the Thursday 10:00 slot to launch a new drama after Grey’s.
Great news! Likable, diverse cast and scripts that seem to avoid bad stereotypes on what a “gay” or “black” character “should” act like. Seems like it has the makings of being a real 21st century “Friends.” Fingers crossed.
Wow.
From reading all the positive responses on this board, it’s great to see I’m not alone in my love for “Happy Endings”. It’s a wildly entertaining and clever show. Characters are all strong and likable, and I especially like Damon Wayan Jr.’s and Eliza Coupe’s acting.
Deon Richmond. Problem solved.
You mean “Bud?”
I really wanted to see Damon Wayans jr in THE NEW GIRL! i hope Happy Endings at least gets a better time slot.
While some may like to see this become as popular as “Friends” was (which it deserves to be), I think it is closer to UK’s “Coupling” as far as style and humor go.
I was skeptical about Happy Endings, not exactly skeptical but I just didn’t even have a desire to see it- but one night NOTHING was on so I decided to watch. Within the first 10 seconds, I was laughing out loud, and I didn’t stop laughing until the show ended. Even my husband was laughing. I made sure to see the next episode, and it didn’t disappoint- a new comedy has not made me laugh this hard EVER. So thrilled it is coming back next season!!!
I like Happy Endings. It’s much better than that NBC show – “Couples” something? What was it? Dunno. Don’t care.
Casey Wilson is terrific.
What’s the word on Mr. Sunshine?
Yes yes yes yes yes yeees. Ringer gets picked up, Happy Endings gets picked up for a second season, Parenthood is coming back and that international house of lazy writing Brothers and Sisters gets cancelled.
Life izzzz goood
OK, now for Body Of Proof…
Heard great things about Wayans Jr. – Soooo excited we’re going to see him on a regular basis.
