ABC Unveils 2011-12 Primetime Schedule
We may have the first head-to-head faceoff of two-hour comedy blocks in years this spring. ABC, which is launching a new Tuesday 8-9 PM comedy block with the Tim Allen starrer Last Man Standing and Chris Moynihan’s Man Up, leading into the Dancing With the Stars result show, plans to extend the block to two hours between the two cycles of Dancing, ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee announced at a press conference this morning. In what could be dubbed “men vs. women,” the two comedies with male leads will be followed by Courteney Cox’s Cougar Town and freshman Apartment 23 starring Krysten Ritter. Fox, of course, already has a 8-10 PM comedy block anchored by Glee at 8 PM and announced yesterday that it will convert it into a four-show block in March when Glee goes on hiatus. Since Dancing usually returns at the end of March, there is a good chance for the two four-comedy blocks to go toe to toe for a couple of weeks, a return to the old times when comedy ruled primetime with blocks on virtually every night of the week.
As for choosing modestly rated midseason comedy Happy Endings to replace Cougar Town in the post-Modern Family Wednesday 9:30 PM slot, Lee called the freshman “the new buzz show,” adding, “we think has a huge potential.” He also echoed NBC’s Bob Greenblatt’s sentiment about putting equal emphasis on fall and midseason. “We’re just as ambitious about our midseason launches as we are about the fall,” Lee said, singling out midseason shows Good Christian Belles and The River.
Lee called newbie Charlie’s Angels “pure candy.” When he was later asked about the overall escapism theme in ABC’s crop of new shows, he said: “It’s a time in which we’re looking for pure entertainment. It’s a balance between comfort and escapism.”

Viva la aging population!
ABC should have moved Grey’s and let something else have the 9 pm slot. Grey’s is going down and they need drama hits.
There should be a rule that a show can only be called a comedy series if more than three people have laughed several times an episode.
LIKE!
I can’t decide if Angels at 8 on Thursday is bad for Community or not.
This dude Hemingson can’t catch a break. Three years in a row his shows are midseason additions. I could have sworn Apt. 23 would go for the Fall. Cougar Town isn’t going to be worth much as a lead-in.
It’s not about catching a break. There are obviously a lot of factors that go into it, but if the show was a stand out show it would be on the fall schedule instead of midseason.
Also, from what I’ve heard, Cougar Town has gotten better. I couldn’t make it past the first two episodes.
r u kidding? he didn’t create it, he ep’d it. he’s created one show (although i’m in the minority, i liked it) and now keeps getting to EP other people’s shows. don’t worry, he’s going to be okay.
What is the appeal of “Cougar Town?” Why does ABC stick with it? It’s just not funny in the least.
Actually, it is.
Seriously. Cougar Town is the most pretentious show I’ve ever seen. They try way too hard, they glorify alcoholism and they’ve turned every actor on that show – many of whom are respectable and have been funny in the past – into pure jokes. It actually makes me a little sick that this show will still be on the air next year.
Seriously? Seriously is right, I bet you like Two and A Half Men, one of the dumber shows I’ve ever seen. Cougar Town reminds me of scrubs and I haven’t laughed that hard at a show in awhile.
Men 18-38 play video games and watch sports. Their wives watch reality shows – older men still watch sports while their older wives watch reality and soapy trash and horrible comedies. All of these shows were chosen out of research and viewing patterns … Women watch more scripted than men. So to compare Greenblatt to Lee is wrong – it just looks their research is on par with American viewing habits…. Welcome to the suck.
All the research in the world does not a schedule make. It is all still a big roll of the dice.
Interesting making Sunday all drama with the exception of the video show, which one could confuse with a drama, because the writing is horrible.
I am missing “Good Christian Bitches” on the schedule. I guess Paul doesn’t want any controversy.
Confused that he kept “Happy Endings.” Not funny, period.
That’s my two “yen” worth.
the demise of network telivision continues.
sorry that’s television!
The new men-centric comedies on ABC Tuesday seem like an odd lead-in to Dancing with the Stars. They’d be a better lead in to what will likely be a male-skewing Charlie’s Angels (Hot chicks kicking ass with little plot).
ABC should have put the Dancing results show on Thursdays at 8 (it would raise the ad rate for the show, it’s proven to be formidable competition for Idol, and it would be a more compatible lead-in to Grey’s).
@ The Right Coast – Cougar Town is funny. The humor is different than some other shows.
Glad to see the networks are getting back to comedies & fun shows. I am so tired of all of the Law & Orders, CSI, Criminal Minds, NCIS, etc. So over all of the “ripped from the headlines” crap. I live in the real world. I want to escape it!
ABC wins that battle against Fox.
Well done, OldGauard. “Welcome to the suck” – Damn straight. My husband works, watches sports and still plays video games while I enjoy reality and humorless comedies. You see, TV comedies don’t have to be funny anymore to stay on the air (look at NBC) – America’s expectations have been lowered since Seinfeld went off the air.
I really wish ABC would revisit changing the name of Cougar Town. People really do think it’s a show about cougars/older women after younger men and it’s nothing like that at all. Change it, make a big push for Courtney Cox to win the Emmy (she’ll get it given her marital troubles and never winning for Friends) and you’ll get more viewers for this hilarious sitcom!
Cougar Town is hilarious. I think it appeals to the post-30 set and the title of the show holds alot of people back as well, but anyone I know who has given it a chance absolutely loves it.
Happy Endings is trying waaaaaaay too hard. Thanks to DVR, though, I can keep Modern Family and Cougar Town back-to-back in my house. It’s the funniest hour on tv these days.
Cougar Town is hilarious. I love that show. However, I wish they would just leave it in its normal time slot on Wednesday.
