The move follows a legal wrangle that took weeks to unravel about negotiating his exit from Disney, some money owing to Sony, and a new pact with New Line to host his production banner that took weeks to unravel. Adam Shankman’s Offspring Entertainment with producer Jennifer Gibgot has a first-look deal at New Line, where he did Hairspray and 17 Again. The banner was housed at Walt Disney Studios for eight years. Meanwhile, New Line says Alec Baldwin has not pulled out of Rock Of Ages. The studio says he has a personal issue that is expected to resolve so he can do the movie, which begins shooting May 23.

So how did THR pick up the wrong story? Thanks for the info, Nikki. I’m glad Baldwin hasn’t pulled out.
I’m still not sure of the cast of Rock of Ages. Can anyone besides Catherine Zeta Jones even sing?
Paul Giamatti, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, and Russel Brand all have great voices. Giamatti’s is actually pretty fantastic.
Then of course there’s Mary J Blige… duh!
Nice spin on this as an overall deal when it’s really just a way to put money against his fees on the movies he’s making for New Line / Warnes like Rock of Ages.
Either way, he’s a hack who makes movies that make money and I’m shocked a real studio didn’t swoop him up.
Isn’t New Line itself basically a vanity production banner at this point?
How is New Line, an entity that by all accounts is being phased out by it’s parent company Warner Brothers, in a position to hand out a first look overall producing deal?
And why prematurely leave the stability of a deal at Disney for a deal at speciality division that may not exist in a year or two?
This doesn’t make a lot of sense and suggests there’s more to the story.
Bad move…New Line will shutter within the next 2 years anyway. The only good thing about this move is it will let Adam do less “Disney-esque” projects.
And to JJ – seriously? Everyone in the movie can sing. Umm…that’s why they were cast.
But can they rock?
Why are you referring to New Line as a studio?
Buying scripts, making deals. Is there New Life at New Line?
Good! Disney is becoming a terrible place to be associated with. The new executives in charge seem to like spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt. That’s what I think, anyway. Adam’s string of successful projects means he will have plenty of work whoever he decides to associate with. You go Adam.
Disney never gave Shankman the respect he deserves. Good for him and better for WB.
