EXCLUSIVE: Fox’s Bones spinoff The Finder is still very much in contention for a series order at Fox. But with shelf space at the network so tight, I hear the network and the series’ producers are exploring a way to give the project presence on Fox next season. The pregnancy of Bones star Emily Deschanel is expected to sideline her for as many as 6-7 episodes from Bones‘ upcoming seventh season. Fox, producing studio 20th TV and Bones creator Hart Hanson are discussing the use of Finder-flavored episodes as a filler during Deschanel’s maternity leave. Those will be Bones episodes with The Finder star Geoff Stults and his sidekick Michael Clarke Duncan appearing in them, giving Hanson an opportunity to further develop them. The future of the third Finder lead, played by Saffron Burrows, which has drawn polarizing reaction, is unclear, but I hear that the producers felt it was hard to service more than 2 new characters on Bones. Sources stress that this is one of several scenarios in contention for Deschanel’s hiatus.
The Finder was introduced in an episode of Bones last month, which got traction with the veteran series’ fans. However, Fox already has Terra Nova and X Factor on tap for fall and Touch penciled in for midseason, so the network will probably pick up as few as 2 new series. With the Ethan Hawke starrer Exit Strategy and medical drama Weekends at Bellevue gaining momentum, it is probably smart to look at alternatives for The Finder. Keeping the show alive with a short order would make it easy for Fox to give it a full-blown series pickup if any of its other new series fails.

That Finder episode was painful to watch.
OMG, they really are trying to make season 7 the last for Bones. I wont be watching those eps. Just ugh!
Geez Mr. Hanson give it a rest and let us see Bones and Booth together. Bite the bullet and show us how good the writers are on the show. We already know they are, just show us more. It won’t kill the show and I swear the fans will stay.
I agree with K….it was painful. It just tried too darn hard to be quirky. And there were whole chunks that seemed to have been lifted out in editing.
I wholeheartedly agree! They spent too much time trying to be quirky and not enough time making me give a damn about any of the characters. When I watched that episode, all I did was wait for anyone from the Bones cast to relieve me of my pain.
And did anyone else find Michael Clarke Duncan’s delivery a little wooden?
I actually liked The Finder’s backdoor pilot. *shrug*
So did I. I didn’t realize I was almost the only one! I found Geoff Stults to be very entertaining and didn’t even mind Saffron Burrow’s Ike.
Same here. I actually really liked it. But then I grew tired of Bones a long time ago, so it was a nice change of pace for me. Haters can hate, but I’d watch it.
So did I.
I can understand Deschanel leaving if she was 5-6 months along — but actresses have found ways to hide their pregnancies onscreen (like Jane Krakowski and Marcia Cross). I’m curious why they haven’t tried that instead.
Charisma Carpenter was pregnant on ANGEL, we shot with her right up almost to the day she gave birth.
if you look closely. they are already hiding her belly.
i would guess she might already be around 5 months along.
So, would The Finder have a 9 or so order and then Bones would come back, or would the Bones episodes be with The Finder?
The Finder was a horror. I will not bother
watching Bones if this Finder crap is used as
a fill in.
Come on…. The FInder/Locator was just plain
BAD
No real bones fan liked that episode.
Not so! I love Bones and I liked this episode.
I’d rather see Finder than either Terra Nova or Touch.
Everyone I know liked the Finder backdoor pilot, and really liked the Burrows character.
Regardless of the length of a series order [seven eps to fill in for Bones, or full season order], we likely won’t watch it without her – unless they come up with a truly amazing character to take her place.
“The Finder was introduced in an episode of Bones last month, which got traction with the veteran series’ fans.”
It did? Who are you kidding Nellie? Take a look at the fan board over at IMDB and Television Without Pity… both are full of nothing but bile for that ep and the new characters. There was also a lot of confusion, as many weren’t aware that it was a backdoor pilot at all, and thought Saffron was replacing Emily or something, which really got their short hairs raised. So far, the negative to positive fan sentiment has been about 20 to 1, so perhaps you should speak with a few of these “veteran fans” before you decide to describe their reaction to The Finder.
Posters at TwoP and IMDB didn’t like the Finder episode?
In other news, water is wet.
I wonder if the next season of Bones is going
to be the last.
Since Hart is pushing for this Finder. He may
have this as a replacment for Bones after season
7.
I disliked The Finder and have no interest in
watching it as a filler or as a series.
Maybe on SciFy…. but not on FOX.
Consider my viewership revoked during those weeks. Ugh, do not want any more Finder.
I liked The Finder pilot too, but they concentrated on the dynamics of the relationship between Geoff Stults’s character & Bones to make it work. However I believe they did reconcile his relationship with Booth enough so that they would be able to work together if they had to. They will have to explain her absence however. A possible scenario would be that she & Booth do start a serious relationship & it gets too much for her & she needs to take a break (go on a book tour or something) but they’ve done the running away thing & she’s supposed to have grown from that. Alternatively, Booth could get reassigned to Florida when the FBI uncovers Bones & Booth’s relationship, however that would take everyone else out of the mix, so they would gave to bring Walter to DC somehow. Regardless, I’m excited for next season. I’m looking forward to a new tone. Season 1 was establishing the series & their friendship. Season 2 was establishing sexual attraction. Season 3 proved their love & loyalty. Season 4 went backwards a bit & solidified their friendship, setting the scene for Season 5 which changed everything and Season 6 was angst & heartbreak to the max!
I liked it. I feel like it could be a lot of fun, however, I dont know how long you can draw it out for television… The kind of items and the locations of items I would want to see him travel to would require longer production schedules. I dont want to see him search NY for some lady’s missing broach… or Detroit for a missing Hood Ornament.
I want him to be traveling to exotic locations hunting down real missing treasures, and sure if along the way he can stop off and find a lesser item (like Bones’ 1st place ribbon or whatever) then thats fine too. But if the whole show was about finding the ribbon, I would have yawned and turned it right off.
Its a good idea… but I want it to be more like Tomb Raider/Uncharted and less like Blues Clues.
Hell to the no!! Thats it that is all. Hide her tummy its been donw befor
I’m a bit surprised that Emily is going to be missing 6 or 7 episodes. I thought it would only be like 4 or 5. I actually had this whole storyline played out in my head how they could write Bones out, but not with that many.
Anyways, I liked The Finder and wouldn’t have a problem supplementing it while Bones is on hiatus. I figure they can play Bones all Fall, then after the winter holidays they can play The Finder episodes for the 7 or 8 weeks needed. Then in March or early April, show all the rest of the Bones episodes straight through.
Iliked the The Finder Backdoor pilot. Noticed it too was based on a book that has been changed for telly. Book is called The Locator, has more characters. meh They Better Keep Saffron Burrows. I liked her a lot. Then I’m from the UK and like seeing our actors in the States. I thought the dynamics of the relationships between Finder Folk & Bones Fook, dead on.
What are people kveching about? Something intelligent amusing quirky and action, Whaat they’re scared because it’s different? Change the channel, that’s what the remote is for. Leave the rest of us to enjoy.
“Its a good idea… but I want it to be more like Tomb Raider/Uncharted and less like Blues Clues.” I second this and if they can make this happen I would watch The Finder over Terra Nova.
lets hope fox says no to this idea [no way]. finder was not good.
Why not let her pregnancy be written in. I think it would be great to have a baby booth. they ciyld do daycare with with baby hodgins and I just want the show to go on!
Omg, me too, it would be awesome and ill definatly be watching. I’m really hoping for a season 8 as well:)
I really don’t want to finder to be incorporated in season 7, I really didn’t like the episode and if they use it while Emily is on leave, I really don’t think Ill bother watching those Bones episodes. I love bones, my favourite show but those episodes, I don’t know!. Also Emily may be away for 6 to 7 episodes, wow that is alot, I can understand like 4 but she is a main character, they need her in like every episode. I really hope she isn’t away for that long, I really want a good season 7. But yeah I didn’t like the finder stuff so I really don’t think that this is a good idea to replace Emily while she is away. I’m sure they could think of something better and a way for Emily to be away for less time.
id rather see the finder than touch or terra nova aswell and @Maggiemay it would be a disater putting them together just look at house putting house/cuddy together turned out to be a complete mess thats the way booth/bones together would go imho
No, no, no, no, and NO! Just make season 7 shorter or something, or start it later and make it last later, I don’t care but why introduce characters into the show who don’t have anything to do with it? Bones is Bones, The Finder is The Finder. Two separate shows who shouldn’t have to cross over. The Finder episode was a disappoint. Why not make a REAL pilot instead of shoving it in a popular show to make sure a lot of people watch it? Seriously, season 6 was a total PAIN! Don’t make season7 its identical twin in boredom and bad scripts.
Better idea: Cut the BONES order to 13. Renew HUMAN TARGET for 13. 26 weeks of original programming. Everybody wins.
