EXCLUSIVE: You remember Brendan Fraser, right? Whose movie career has been in the witness protection program since CBS Films’ Extraordinary Measures and hasn’t had a major hit since 2008′s Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3D and The Mummy 3. But whose roles remain as eclectic as anyone’s in Hollywood? Well, he hasn’t changed his ways even though he’s been absent from the box office recently. Fraser will star in what’s being billed to me as a “sweeping epic historical drama” that starts production in Toronto in August. Four Kings is set against the French and Indian War that essentially divided North America. Executive produced by Todd Moyer and James Holt, the film is produced by Jeff Sackman (American Psycho) from a project developed by Telefilm Canada. Fraser, himself a Canadian-American, stars as Colonel Lord Francis Nicholson, a vastly wealthy Brit who self-finances the war in the hope of creating a utopian society in what is now Canada. Writer/director Damian Lee of Alchemist Entertainment is attached.
Fraser will also voice the role of Scorch in The Weinstein Company’s much-delayed 3D animated film, Escape From Planet Earth, about a group of aliens plotting to escape that top-secret Nevada compound popular with conspiracists known as Area 51. It was first announced back in 2006, no kidding! The film is being produced by Catherine Winder, Donna Gigliotti, and visual effects whiz Luke Carroll, from Cal Brunker who segues to director from the storyboard artist on both Despicable Me and 9.
Fraser kicks his career into overdrive this summer when he stars in several films shooting between June and the end of August. Fraser’s currently on location in Belfast shooting the fish-heist comedy Whole Lotta Sole, co-written and directed by Terry George, and will start on Gimme Shelter in June directed by writer/director Ronald Krass. He’s repped by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment and attorney Patti Felker.

Fraser is awesome. He just didn’t go with the drippin’ hunk persona of “Gods & Monsters” and spent a lot of time makin’ studios money with kid friendly green screen fare, like “Center of Earth”. I think he’s just hungry for recognition as an actor, even though I don’t understand why.
Really? You don’t don’t understand why he doesn’t want to make “Furry Vengeance 2″? Good actors like to be challenged, and Fraser is a good actor when he wants to be. He made “Gods & Monsters,” didn’t he? He should be taking his cues from that movie. It’s because of movies like that one, or “Crash,” or any of the other serious work he’s done, that his career is still given the benefit of the doubt.
I’ve always liked Brendan Fraser’s smaller films such as With Honors, The Last Time, Journey to the End of the Night, The Air I Breathe, etc over the big blockbusters that he is in. These are the movies that no one sees or they go straight to DVD. No one appreciates those films and the only movies that he is in that get publicity are the godawful huge blockbusters like The Mummy films, Journey to the Center of the Earth, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Inkheart, etc.
He needs something to turn things around for him, but none of these sound like the vehicle to do it.
Fraser will always be C level talent hence the list of projects in the article. He doesn’t have the movie star good looks or machismo bravado like a Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman or even Matt Damon so he tends to find generally dopey roles to play. The Mummy, George of The Jungle, a dad journeying to the center of the earth, etc.
His best bet at this point is to head out for pilot season next year.
Well there’s 3 films I will absolutely not see. This guy is not a good actor. he’s boring as hell.
He used to stay at a hotel I worked at for years and he is an odd man. He always used an alias of Mr. Markson, which we all found hilarious. Dude is nuts!
I wish the industry was as lenient on directors as they are on actors. A film that doesn’t work always puts the director in jail, while an actor can continue on with 9 lives. Case in point here…
its his voice. his voice is just annoying, especially when yelling which he does often in the mummy films. its funny. i bet he was desperate to do mummy 3 but Rachel Weiz not so much. the difference? Oscar nomination
@Greg,
I don’t think Brendan needs ANYTHING to turn things around for him. Hollywood has always been amazed by the fact that Brendan comes with a fan club. People love the guy. He’ll be fine with or without the Hollywood snark.
Anybody who can do both “The Mummy” and “The Quiet American” within breathing room of each other is immensely talented, plus he’s a wonderfully likable bloke. He’ll probably be one of those guys like Jeff Bridges, Bruce Dern, Sam Elliott, Ben Johnson and who-knows-how-many others who dignify every film they’re in yet only get recognized, if at all, in their later years.
I hate to say this , but I think his ship has passed. Brendan should have been very picky about scripts & directors after the mega-success of the first ‘Mummy’ movie. He has the talent to follow a Matt Damon-type of career.
Brendan is a fine comedy/action actor but he is not a dramatic actor. It’s understandable that he wants to try and prove that he can do drama but he just doesn’t have the chops. Anyone who saw EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES noticed the night-and-day difference between Harrison Ford and Brendan.
Dig him lots. Thinking woman/man’s hunk. Even his most silly films are entertaining because of him.
“Gods & Monsters” is a masterpiece.
@Fraser haters: wahwahwahwahwah! Get a job or a fanbase or both. Buncha stupid hippies!
“Long Delayed” and “The Weinstein Company” is so cliche now isn’t it???
Ship has passed? C-level actor? Maybe on pay scale, but not on talent. He is a success. He is a working actor who earns a living from doing what he loves. He can chose to work on studio films or Indie films. He will continue to work the rest of his life.
I wish I was so lucky.
So, he’ll never take over the Bourne Identity franchise. So, what. I also enjoyed his Indie films. He is more talented than he gets credit for. He just makes choices to satisfy himself without chasing that “It guy” thing. I agree with one of the posters above. He’ll turn in something incredible in the next few years and everyone will be all over his stick.
Good for him.
Hey, Seriously, completely agree with you. The man has talent, especially if we are talking about him. That film he’ll do about Canada, so f-ing awesome. I’ve literally been dying to see him step it up a bit, he is a very talented guy, he just hasn’t showed us his “fireworks” ya know his “boom, boom, boom”. Go Brendan!! To the haters, what hoobastank have y’all been drinking!!LOL
I WANT THE MUMMY 4!!!!!!!!!
As a few people already mentioned, Brendan Fraser is a good actor who has appeared in some bad movies. Anyone who has seen the terrfic films, “Gods and Monsters,” or “The Quiet American” would have to agree. Brendan is now 42 but he is still an immensely likable fellow. He just needs to get into the gym with a trainer, soak up a few rays and get picky about his future projects.
Brendan is gorgeous, funny, extremely talented, and very well followed, and I look forward to anything with him in it. He’s also a very good dad to his children. If I am EVER lucky enough to bump into him, I will make sure he knows how I feel
