UPDATE: It’s official, there will be no sixth season of ABC’s family drama Brothers and Sisters. And V won’t return for a third season either. ABC just made the calls.
PREVIOUS: Barring any last-minute miracle, it looks like this is the end of the road for ABC’s veteran family drama Brothers and Sisters. There had been a serious effort by ABC and producing studio ABC Studios to find a price point at which they could bring the show back for an abbreviated sixth and final season. There have been talks with star Calista Flockhart to return for six episodes next season. Last May, Brothers and Sisters clinched a last-minute 18-episode order that was subsequently expanded to 22 episodes. But the indications are, with so many drama pilots scoring high in testings and screenings this year, ABC is ready to say good-bye to the Walker clan.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

ABC’s making another mistake? Shocker. They are turning into another NBC in the bonehead moves department.
Testings and screenings are no substitute for stability and an existing fanbase.
This is the problem when the balance between creative and business shifts too heavily on the side of business.
I respectfully disagree. Creatively, this show is exhausted.
I agree….how many different ways are there to fight at the dining room table
Agreed. How many divorces or illegitimate children can one family really have?
Sarah got divorced the first season, and this season started off with the military brother’s wife having left him. I’m completely blanking on any illegitimate children, except maybe Sarah? Were we watching the same show?
At first, they thought Rebecca was William’s illegitamate child. Then a year or so later, there was Ryan who IS William’s child from an affair.
Yes, creatively the show IS exhausted and the actors looked bored – except for the fantastic Sally Field. Great cast but it really has been all over the map past two seasons. It is too bad though this show was a utility player for the network and one would hope they could have ended on a better note. The last episode, sorry guys, looks ridiculous.
I really think you have all lost your mind. This is the best family drama on TV. The Walker family draws you in. There may be a few issues of reality in the story line but for the most part it’s right on. I guess you all live in a different world where nobody argues or has drama! The point is no matter what happens in an episode, good or bad the Walker family (cast) manages to make you feel like you are invited to watch their lives as it happens. I Love ABC’s Sunday Line-Up but most of all I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
I COMPLETELY AGREE. AM REALLY GOING TO MISS THE WALKERS ON SUNDAY NIGHTS AS IS ALL OF MY EXTENDED FAMILY BOOOOO TO ABC
I also agree. I loved Brothers & Sisters and looked forward to the Sunday Night show. ABC at the very least you could of given them a chance to say good bye to the fans.
I am so upset to hear that this show is going to be canceled. I have watched it everyday and have enjoyed it immensely. The actors are fantastic, especially, Sally Field.
This was the only show I watched on ABC guess its back to all CBS not gonna watch a stupid show about stewardes you blew it ABC I loved the cast oh well
Yeah right, this show is just warming up! You’re a fool as well as a lousy critic. I’m sorry, but you must be a Jeopardy watcher..lame and exhausting. PLEASE get a life and stick to your lifetime TV show
your comments are not needed here.
LOL, an “existing fanbase” that has dwindled to just a few million viewers. I love B&S, but it is time for the show to go. The audience has fled, and the quality has gone downhill. ABC is better off trying a fresh show that has a stronger chance of doing well. B&S just won’t pick up lapsed viewers at this stage. Doing so is very rare for any show of its age, historically.
A few? I don’t call 5 or 6 a few. Most of broadcast TV these days is delivering comparable numbers. I’ve been happy with most of this season since they ended the Justin/Rebecca blah blah.
It’s not about picking up lapsed viewers, although it is possible and if “Housewives” had a resurgence, “B&S” may also benefit.
At any rate, I find “trying a fresh show” to be flawed thinking since they’ll cancel it if it doesn’t do gangbusters by its second episode. The chances of something new doing better is about the same as “B&S” drawing new or lapsed viewers.
Better is going to have to be equaling or bettering “Housewives” or retaining viewers better than “B&S”.
Good luck.
I JUST WANT TO SAY I THINK IT’S TERRIBLE THAT YOUR CANCELLING SUCH A GOOD FAMILY SHOW..THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH GOOD FAMILY SHOWS ANYMORE..SALLY FIELD AND THE REST OF THE CREW IS GREAT I WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO RECONSIDER AND KEEP THE SHOW IT WILL BE MISSED..
FAMILY SHOW?? Gimme a break.
Unmarried couples living together ! Gay lovers everywhere !
Now the unmarried sister pregnant.
Even “Mom” unsure who the father of her 1st child was ( and maybe other children as well).
Maybe it’s real world stuff for adults, but a ” Family Show”?
I think not.
Not sorry to see it go, but I don’t have much hope for anything better replacing it.
Maybe something like Dancing With the Pawn Stars will work.
Family show is a show about a FAMILY….. and by the way…you sound homophobic..or a Right Winged Republican……we are all from a FAMILY, whether white, black, gay…or in your case very close minded. Get a life…share the world with everyone. And Brothers & Sisters was a great show about a family and all the ups and downs that come & go. B&S WILL BE SADLY MISSED…ANOTHER GOOD SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED BY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I will miss Brothers and Sisters. We can so much relate to the lives of Nora’s children on the show. They should not have changed the storyline with Rebecca and Holly and the company they all worked for. They did the same thing with Everwood, a good family show they teased us with for a few short years and then yanked it out of our grasp. I am very sad this is happening. Watching the show gave us something to talk about at work on Monday morning. We could relate with the characters – that’s why we love them. Sad, sad!!
I think it’s terrible as well that ABC is cancelling such a great quality show with terrific actors. The family is rather healthy, and we don’t see that very often. There is soooo much crap on TV. Why not take off some of the reality TV and keep this fantastic show???
I agree….this was one of the best(and there are few) worth watching! Please consider bringing this one back!
What a great show – one of the few I actually looked forward to and watched. Great cast – I think it is a big mistake
I have watched brother’s and sisters from day 1 and I love this show serioiusly! Sally Field is awesome, so genuine and I love David Annable as Justin, he is again so genuine. At times it goes off the reality scale but it makes me laugh and cry and I get them! It is the only show on TV that I watch without fail!
Me too. Save the Walkers Pleez
I have loved this show from day 1. Sally Field, Dave Annabel, Rachel Griffin…all excellent. After a while…they seemed like family to me. I will say that they truly ruined the show earlier this season in their attempt to make it less serialized. They seemed to lose most of their viewers this season as the stories got weaker. I’ll miss this great show.
please dont cancele the show brothers and sisters, that a great show i look forward to sunday night, cancele some trashy show like the bachlor
I am so extremely saddened to have to say goodbye to the Walkers. It is incredible to loose such a wonderful drama when there is so much other garbage on television.
It had a wonderful run, but they should at least end it the right way! Yes, there lacks a little creativity in the last few series, but it needs an ending!
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Send off the Walkers properly! Damn you ABC!
The season finale felt like a series finale. I won’t complain. It had a great run.
Agreed Sam. I have loved this show since the beginning, but you have to admit the last season or so has been stretched thin, and the finale set just the right tone as if we were saying goodbye. It was a nice run, but it’s time.
I agree with you on that. The finale was a perfect ending and left me feeling happy with things. I will miss my dose of the Walkers that is for sure.
Add me to the list of people who think B&S ended beautifully. I loved the last episode; it felt a lot like a full circle from episode one, season one.
I didn’t think this season exactly sucked, but it was clearly running out of ideas (they could only blame so many of the ills of the world on William Walker).
PS – this made sense…far more than, say, cancelling Ugly Betty did last year….THAT was a show that still had juice in it.
I still haven’t forgiven ABC for cancelling “Betty”.
Agreed – will never forgive them for canceling “Ugly Betty”
It was a good time to let the Walkers go. Enjoyed the run but it got tired this season. Kevin and Sarah just were too over the top and annoying. I know something is done when I start fast forwarding through episodes…
I agree , a great ending. Everything was tied up and finished . I’ll miss it, but I had a feeling that was it
Me again.
The first half of the season felt tired & dead but they infused some life into the series with Sarah’s ‘real father’ and then Kevin & Scotty getting their baby back. Most beautiful moment.
It ended on a really good note. In tune with the show, the walkers will fight but at the end we want them to be happy and that was it in the finale. Kitty is preggers though docs had said she wasn’t able to do it. What would have season 6 be about? I don’t see any solid storyline that could have gone forward.
I’m very happy how the show ended and have really really really love ‘Brothers & Sisters’ and there really is no greater family than the Walkers. The Walker clan is one hell of a clan. I’m greatful for the joy this show has been. Thanks ABC.
It had a great run and ABC does not need it anymore. Time to move on. This season has sucked.
No big loss here. Show has always been a bore. Every episode filled with whiny crying and drama. Good riddance.
ABC really does have some good new shows this year!
They’ve been lucky to get 5 seasons out of this and with Desperate Housewives fading far from it’s past glory ABC can’t afford to give up it’s Sunday nights to poor performers like Brothers & Sisters.
The show had a good run, it’s not going to bring in ratings or dollars so it’s time to cancel.
I hope this means Grace has a chance with one more Drama space open
Especially since it’s a family drama at least to a degree. I need that dance in my life each week!!
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE give us some sort of wrap-up season or 2-hour movie, or SOMETHING!!! Not fair!
And I hope that ABC gives Detroit 1-8-7 another chance to succeed. It was quality on every level, had only 18 episodes and a schedule that drove its followers crazy.
just what we need …and yet another cop show…can’t get enough
of people raped and killed….can only hope that you are in
the 15-21 age group and just aren’t fully cooked yet…just like
les moonves
I agree with you. Way too many cop shows with violence as the theme. Makes you want to stay home and watch tv, but hey, there is nothing on but murder and rape!!!
I stopped watching early this season and I NEVER stop watching shows until they are done
good riddance
The show has been nothing but terrible after Jon Robin Baitz left. It’s clear that no one wants to be involved with the show either, good riddance.
Word. The first season was three shades of awesome but once Baitz left, it went slowly downhill. So many places where the show went wrong in small degrees .. ultimately I stopped watching last season and tried very hard to start again this year but only got through one or two eps before removing it from my DVR. How many times can Justin overdoes?? Tired!
I’m not surprised. B&S used to be one of the best written and acted shows on TV. And right around when they brought in Emily Van Camp, it was at the top of it’s game. Then, about a year ago it started going downhill, and then they wrote her off the show. After she left, and they did a time jump after the mass family car accident, it was all down hill. Instead of picking up right after an AMAZING cliff hanger finale, they came back in cop out fashion, and as a joke no less. Organic humor was replaced with slapstick comedy. The show was always HILARIOUS (family dinner scenes) but it balanced the gut wrenching drama with the natural comedy and it WORKED. But not long ago, they started getting just plain silly with the comedy, and the drama was being stretched and ridiculous. Repeating story lines, new annoying characters replacing former awesome ones who were either pushed to the background or dropped altogether, bad acting….not sure what happened but I went from being unable to miss a moment, to stopping watching altogether.
Both Rob Lowe and Emily Van Camp got out in the nick of time!
Well done ABC, b&s this season was awful, the real series ended with the premierè, B&S the soap opera is getting axed. I’m happy that these awful screen writers won’t ruin the sow anymore.
I don’t care about Brothers and Sisters but V ending is kind of a bummer.
Damn, “V” had a lot of potential and a great cast. BOO!
I agree V’s season finale was so intense and such a winner – it made me want to watch next season. Such a shame -
Brothers and Sisters ended well, i’m happy with it after watching for 5 seasons. V had potential, would have liked a 3rd season but hey ho, that’s life!
Bret Harrison can now add this to his canceled show resume… heh
Yeah, poor guy… He doesn’t seem to catch a break… EVER!
I’m soooo sorry to see it go, there’s not much quality shows on, it is a shame..
ABC- All Bout Change.
When something gets good it’s time to dump it.
Really sad about V. The last few episodes have been amazing. I hope ABC finds a place for Elizabeth Mitchell somewhere on one of their shows. She deserves it.
ABC is SERIOUSLY PISSING ME OFF!!! They did this with Dirty Sexy Money and the series about the pie making guy who could bring people back to life for 30 seconds. How many times do they think they can dump on viewers by not finishing a series!! Damn it, ABC! Those of us fans of these shows should be afforded the courtesy of you spending a few more bucks and giving the show a proper ending.
I’ve been hesitant on getting involved in new ABC shows since ABC did this to me with DSM and the pie maker. Now I’m all wrapped up in V, only to have them pull the same crap again!!
I PROMISE I won’t be watching any new ABC shows unless they’ve been on for at least two seasons. Then if I see they’re going to make it that long, I’ll catch up with the series on-line. I did the same with the series HOUSE on Fox by watching a few years of reruns on one of the cable channels, then watched the new ones when they air (now) on Fox.
I say we all voice our displeasure to ABC about this practice! For being fans of the network and of these series, they dump on us. ENOUGH, ABC!!
The show was Pushing Daisies and it was a beautiful little show that should have had a longer life… one of the most charming shows with one of the most appealing casts in recent memory. They did do a short/sort of wrap up in the coda of the final episode but it wasn’t really enough (and man was it a tease!!)
ABC… YOU SUCK!!! V was a great series! I agree with Dan (above). You owe it to viewers to actually complete something you start. V was supposed to be a sort of long-form mini series with an end (like the week long series in the 80′s). And now you leave your viewers “high and dry” without an end??!!! What kind of customer service do you people provide! Do you not care about your viewers? Do you not think you owe viewers an end to this story line? For pete’s sake… it’s like running Roots from Monday thru Thursday, then deciding that the ratings weren’t good enough so you forget about running the Friday conclusion. So what you do is punish those who DO watch your network by not finishing up the series.
What boneheads are making the decisions at ABC?! Disney was always about customer service and leaving a good impression. It’s hard to believe Disney owns ABC by treating loyal customers this way! ABC… You suck!
It’s a soap opera. ABC has made it clear that it wants to cancel every soap opera on the network. DH should be next. Women dont know what they want to watch and most certainly do not want to watch escapism. The male execs have to tell them what is good for them. And if they dont like it, well… they can just go read a book.
If you want to know exactly what the Suits at ABC think about “wimmin’s” place, check out how it treats it’s female characters in it’s daytime lineup. They are all bitches, whores or desperate about a man.
Brothers & Sisters was pretty good in its first season (though the pilot was a mess). Unfortunately, one too many lost Walker children coming into the mix along with Rob Lowe’s inclusion which prompted an attempt to get all West Wing lite and political was boring and took the focus away from the family. Plus everyone left the family business so the entire cast was locked away in their own little storylines rather than interacting with one another except for the all too regular screaming fits. ABC was right to stick a fork in this show. Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths deserved much better than to drowning in the muck those “writers” were vomiting onto the page.
Yeah, on that note I TOTALLY DISAGREE! I thought Rob Lowe’s poltical storyline — and ALL of B&S political plots — are what drew in such a diverse audience to a family night soap/drama. I started watching the show from the FIRST EPISODE on when I was finishing college, mostly on the premise that the character of Kitty was unofficially based on conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham (who is real life has a gay brother).
Later on, the Addition of Rob Lowe made his character and Kitty the only two non-vilified Republican characters on TV (possibly is TV History).
I guess what my point is, is that the show (until THIS season when all the fun political stories were DUMPED) had a wide-net of various audiences and appealed generally to more then just the target demo (Greg Berlanti’s OTHER big show, Everwood, had some of the same charm). Oh well, ‘B&S’, R.I.P. — your were fun while you lasted
P.S. IT also fit in TWO Christmas episodes in the series run (this season a great homage to ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’)
