EXCLUSIVE: CAA has just signed Stephen Gaghan, the Oscar-winning Traffic screenwriter who wrote and directed Syriana. Gaghan, who had been at WME, left right after his 20th TV pilot wasn’t picked up by NBC. He moves at a time when he seemed to have a lot going on. On the film front, he has the Warner Bros drama Dead Spy Running and will direct his script, and he has an untitled project at Lionsgate. He also recently signed a two-year deal at 20th Century Fox TV, where he turned in a pilot script to NBC for an untitled LA drama that was once called SILA. The pilot didn’t get picked up for fall and is being shopped to cable. WME commissions all those jobs.

Here is the bottom line: WME is just not as good at servicing their clients as CAA is. The agents at caa are helpful and work their asses off, while the agents at WME (not all, but enough) rest on their laurels.
Great sing by CAA.
* sign
Ha caa wont do nothing for him
just another on the scrapheap
maybe he can write Jennifer Aniston a average/poor romcom
Or at least that’s what was written on a crumpled up piece of paper discovered at the worst poetry slam ever.
*an average/poor romcom NOT a average/poor romcom.
What are the people at WME telling themselves to cope with this? What’s the company line?
You cast your pilot with not exciting actors and then blame your agency when it doesn’t get picked up. Oh well…
Oh really, CAA is supportive of their clients. I for one can tell you that they are not always supportive if it doesn’t serve the Agency. They are full of it. I am repped by WME now because CAA screwed me when they repped me. So it can happen to anyone.
Great sign by CAA. WME is more like the old William Morris and the old ICM then the old Endeavor and I guess Chris Donnelly blew another one that was handed to him.
You mean WME is more like the old William Morris and….ICM. The old ICM was a powerhouse.
Well, WME is a powerhouse so…
In all seriousness, Steve from Kentucky is the most pretentious hack ever. Hasn’t written anything good in a decade. If being committed to your craft consists of being mostly interested in who you’re having dinner with and who your friends are, you’ve gone to the right writer. Don’t walk, but RUN AWAY when his name is suggested.
Stephen is a brilliant writer. Sure, maybe he can be a little pretentious at times, but he’s got a wicked sense of humor about it. Gaghan’s got the street smarts, the real world experience and the literary pedigree to put most writers to shame. The guy loves his Tolstoy!
And that scene between Clooney and Christopher Plummer in Syriana? The one where Clooney tells him to fuck off in the diner? Are you KIDDING? One of the most badass scenes from a movie in YEARS.
The brilliance and prescience of Syriana will continue to emerge as our economy collapses and oil runs out. Watch it happen.
Gaghan is the real deal, a true artist, and works harder than anyone I’ve ever heard of when he’s in writing mode: guy spends 15 hours a day, 7 days a week WORKING his ass off.
Looks like PT Anderson went first, and now Gaghan. Two of the best writers our industry has.
Guess CAA is truly stepping up their game.
ha. I use to listen to this guy at AA meetings go on and on about his self indulgent travels around the world. One of the partners at UTA brought him there. Guess UTA tries to land the biz anyway they can.
way to keep it anonymous buddy
Mick Jagger looks great!!!
I can see it now: “Stephen Gaghan’s Flintstones.” Brought to you by a cast of dozens (of CAA clients), and 35 different screenwriting teams (and 35 commission checks for CAA).
Stephen is so talented. I wish he would just stick to writing and directing movies…forget the TV stuff. Traffic and Syrania are two great movies….I hope it works out for him.

Man, some of you guys are complete idiots. I know Steve and he’s a great guy and is one of the best screenwriters of all time. It’s infuriating that people can talk smack about individuals they don’t even know. This guy works his ASS OFF and cinema needs Stephen Gaghan. He’s going to make the history books. Will you? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Find you’re passion and stop hating. Don’t hate someone else just because they’ve mastered their craft.
Hey Logan…any word on the Pilot as of August? I agree with you. I was in the Pilot and Stephen was great to work with.
