EXCLUSIVE: Nothing’s official yet, but I’m expecting Cameron Diaz to have a deal shortly to star in Lionsgate’s What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the Kirk Jones-directed romantic comedy adaptation of Heidi Murkoff’s bestselling how-to manual. The pic has a script by Heather Hach and Shauna Cross. Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and David Thwaites are producing, and Doug McKay is co-producer. Murkoff and husband Erik Murkoff are exec producers with Alan Nevins. The idea is to take a book that has sold north of 16 million copies, and turn into a pic in the vein of Love Actually, where five couples experience the surprises that happen when a stork visit is imminent.
Diaz just started production today alongside Colin Firth in Gambit, the Michael Hoffman-directed caper comedy that was scripted by Joel and Ethan Coen. Shooting on What To Expect When You’re Expecting will begin in July. Diaz is repped by CAA and Rick Yorn.

This movie will not make $$$$$! It sounds more like a semonar for lamas class, only pregnant women would have interest in seeing this, a chic flick, you cannot drag male audience into the theater for this one unless they were tortured! Diaz will pocket the salary, but studio, producers will lose money on this! I would drop this script and send it to be made into ” health video ” for expecting women would make more sense! This movie is a loser already! The subject does not appeal to both sex and mass audience! It’s business, nothing personal! It costs too much to make a movie that bombs badly!look at Uma Thurman’s last movie about a single parent, young professional….remember how painfully bad it was ? And how badly it tanked at the box office….study the trends guys! Good luck:)
Technically if they were to study the trends they would have a decent hit on their hands, seeing as how the movie follows the likes of He’s Just Not That Into You, Valentine’s Day, and the to-be-released New Year’s Eve… which all opened up at #1 (minus New Year’s Eve, which again, hasn’t released yet). Maybe next time you should think about what you write before you step off your high horse…Idiot.
The project is a whole lot less risky than stepping off a high horse.
Honestly, when I hear Cameron Diaz; I think “woman who decided to never be a mother.” I hope she’s the last single girl out of a group of friends and only serves to propel the story forward, otherwise it’s a really bad casting decision.
I don’t know. Mommymovies are a tough sell to me as a parent ’cause if you haven’t had a baby, why would a story about having babies interest you and if you have a baby you ain’t goin’ to the movies.
So true!
So, let me see if I understand: Hollywood is desperate that they now want to turn a non-fiction reference manual into a movie. How very “Lifetime: Television for Women” of them.
Doug McKay is awesome!
I second that! Doug McKay is awesome! A production like this needs a person like Doug, who’s untainted creative input can help keep it from going astray.
Love the DMC.
This Doug may be a nice guy, but there is no way in which this will not go “astray.”
Worst. Movie. Idea. Ever.
I love Diaz to death … She might be a bit long in the tooth for this by now though …
Snarky comment about how washed up and ’90s Cameron is in 5…4…3…2…
You guys are really wrong on this one. That’s a great book and quite funny (which you would know if you had shut your pie-hole long enough to check the book out. You all seem to jump in with inappropriate comments to “Zing” the stories. Why is that? Are you in a race to see how stupid you can appear to be? I can think of several ways this can be a really funny story. I’d bet that a story about Heidi Murkoff could be funny. What about her journey to write the book that started it all? What if she is married to a Jerry Lewis or Dick Van Dyke character and wants to see how she can deal with both him and the new kid? Not too original, but it could be funny… Afterall, the big comedy last year was “The Hangover.” Where was the originality there? Well, it really was funny, but Who’da Thunkit? Oh, one more thing, “Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.”
It’s a terrible idea. Cameron Diaz is the last person people think of when they think of motherhood. She can’t open a film and for a production company to just buy a title and think they can turn it in to something, well, that’s just plain lazy. Who is this McKay person? Doesn’t seem to be much info on him out there, so I’m thinking he may be over before he started. And the director? I guess no one else wanted to touch the material. Big. Fail.
