Angelina Jolie’s much-discussed feature directing debut now has a title and a distributor. Graham King and his GK Films partner Tim Headington, who financed it, have placed it with their FilmDistrict shingle. FilmDistrict CEO Peter Schlessel will slot In The Land Of Blood And Honey, the Bosnia-set drama that Jolie scripted, for a Dec. 23 release in the US. The film is set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War in the 1990s and, according to a statement, “illustrates the consequences of the lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict. “The film is specific to the Bosnian War, but it’s also universal,” Jolie said in a statement. “I wanted to tell a story of how human relationships and behavior are deeply affected by living inside a war.” Said King: “Working with Angelina on this film and story has been a great collaboration and I am extremely proud of this film. The filmmaking is impeccable, and signals the arrival of a visceral and compelling storyteller.”
Jolie doesn’t appear in the film, and the cast is comprised of locals, many of whom were children of the war. Jolie shot the film simultaneously in English and their native language, which was called Serbo-Croatian and is now referred to as BHS. Zana Marjanovic, Goran Kostic and Rade Serbedzija star.
“The former Yugoslavia has a rich history of dramatic arts. The cast was extraordinary. I was privileged and honored to work with them, and I am very excited for everyone to see their immense talent,” adds Jolie.

Wow.
I hope it plays in my area.. I so want to see it. I like how she kept the title quiet until everything was worked out and the release date set. Hope to see a trailer soon. December is a great time for this kind of film. They must really have high hopes for it..
Nice to see her grow and try new things.
I’d hate to see the McDonalds Happy Meal tie in for this.
Can’t wait to see it..
Interesting project i just hope she didn’t hollywodize it!
She has visited those areas..
and the cast was from that area too.. I think she will be very true to what she has seen. And unlike many she knows a lot about these cultures.
I think she will do it justice.. December is too far away.. I wonder if all those that thought the title was United Love Story will fix their silly mistakes. Sad that the media is never required to only print facts and when they are wrong.. print the truth.
that would be too Right I guess.
That doesn’t seem likely. It is contraindicated by the subject material, the non-casting of her self, the regional casting and the use of two languages. Sounds very un-Hollywood to me and undoubtedly will have limited appeal and exposure. One thing it will have going for it is the curiosity factor of it being a first and major work of her’s. That might be the most important factor for an “encouraging” box office return.
Is Lara Croft gonna be in it? If not, pass…
Amazing. I have a feeling this is going to be very solid and better than people expect. Maybe it will get some awards’ buzz.
With all the hoopla surrounding Jolie’s debut I find it incredibly generous for her to point a focus towards her actors. She’s really something else altogether.
Nah, I don’t think she’ll “Hollywood-ize” it. As a UN refugee ambassasor she’ll want to tell a story full of realism, I’d suspect.
If Jolie were going to “Hollywood-ize” the movie then she would have made it within the studio system. Instead she chose to go outside of the system and went directly to Graham King with the script (and she says she and Pitt also put their own money into the project). She could have shopped it around Hollywood and turned it into a big circus with studios fighting over the not necessarily the script, but her services. They would likely have tied financing to Jolie starring in a movie for them. Jolie’s smart and knows how Hollywood works. She said she wanted to make an authentic film and she has. Also, she deliberately chose to use local actors and after the war they’ve been through those actors were highly unlikely to help her misrepresent their people.
Jolie as always, has done things her way. She promoted her movie Salt all of last summer and she never said anything about a finished script that she has written and did not leak until she was ready to start shooting. How unlike most in Hollywood where it would have been leaked to Nikki months ahead of time.
She is definitely very different in this industry and I hope she continues to succeed on her own terms and continue to blaze a trail for women that will come after her. I will definitely be supporting her efforts at the box office.
Who cares? Angelina Jolie has become so irrelevant as an actor that she suddenly thinks people are going to be interested in her ‘directing?’ It won’t take much longer before Hollywood won’t have anything more to do with her and she can learn how to be an actual, real mother to her clan of Benetton children instead of letting everyone else raise them. Angelina, you’ve got all the money you’ll ever need, go raise your children that you’ve supposedly cared so much to adopt from around the world. It’s time to let go of your ego and become a mother!
Ang and Brad are getting married, their children will be just fine and she is going to win an award for her film. He is so proud of her, we all are.
I sincerely hope this doesn’t get swept under the rug, because of the lack of sensationalism !! I would love to see Rade Serbedzija be in another huge sucess….
Angelina is proving that she is a multifaceted talent. All of the negative anti-woman commentators can go see Spiderman 4. Grow your minds, expand your horizons and learn something. I can’t wait to see this film. The rest of you are jerks
It will probably be another one of those one sided movies again telling a story of how the poor bosnian suffered and not the other 2 sides so sick of those kind of movies!!!!!!! I just wish someone would tell the truth!
Mirjana;
You sound like you know the truth. Why don’t you share it with us?
Mirjana, you might like the movie “Savior” with Dennis Quaid. My ex husband (who is a war-refugee himself) introduced me to this movie, saying that this is the most realistic movie made about the war so far.
I’ve been in the former war-zone myself and no movie or news report could ever show the amount of destruction, a lot still not repaired, even after 15 years… And don’t even get me started on the long-term-effects of PTSD… I’ve seen people being destructed completely by this war. My BIL was in a concentration camp during the war – he committed suicide last year… RIP, J. – you won’t be forgotten…:-(
I’m anxiously waiting to see this movie…
Did Angelina Jolie use (steal) this book (The Soul Shattering in English) written by the Bosnian-Croatian author James J. Braddock a.k.a Josip J. Kneževi?, as the story platform for her movie In The Land of Blood and Honey?
Did she totally miss the truth and core of that genocidal war against Bosnia and her people?
Why was she banned from filming in Bosnia by the most influental organization of women – victims of the war?
Did she rewrite history and offended thousands of women and other innocent victims of the Serbian aggression on Bosnia & Herzegovina?
Should American women and human rights organizations get involved?
