EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Gosling is set to star and direct a remake of the 1980 movie The Idolmaker for MGM. It would be the Oscar-nominated actor’s directorial debut. Idolmaker, directed by Taylor Hackford, starred Ray Sharkey in a story about the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Gosling — in Cannes this week for the premiere of the competition film Drive, co-starring Carey Mulligan and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn — has been shifting his focus from indies to more mainstream fare of late. He’s co-starring alongside Steve Carell in Warner Bros’ Crazy, Stupid, Love, which opens July 29, and he is starring in Logan’s Run and Gangster Squad, Warner Bros’ big Will Beall-scripted crime drama that also will star Sean Penn and Josh Brolin.

Ryan Gosling #winning
I think I am in love with him. No, I am.
Ugh…He’s really nowhere near as good as people keep hyping him up to be and he needs to stop getting involved with remakes.
Um…have you seen THE BELIEVER, HALF NELSON, or BLUE VALENTINE??? He’s one of the best young stars, like James Franco, of this generation. He was also good in THE NOTEBOOK (yes it’s sappy, but both him and McAdams make that film work, ALL GOOD THINGS, and THE UNITED STATES OF LELAND.
You’re crazy to call him overrated.
I remember Ryan Gosling on the Mickey Mouse Club. He was singing & dancing on that program. Yes, he is one of the best actors ( young or old ) in Hollywood. I wouldn’t put James Franco in that category.
Me either. I’m pretty outraged that hack poser Franco is being compared to Gosling. Young Hercules is the real deal.
Yes, Yes and YES! And I agree with Overrated. Gosling is OVERrated to an annoying point! But then again, he’s not the only one!
I have to agree. He’s too mannered and too much of a show-off as an actor that I never buy him in his roles nor do I forget that he’s “acting”. I found him irritating, hammy, and inconsistent in Blue Valentine. The way his character “aged” was ridiculous and not believable. Maybe working in more mainstream projects will lower his annoying “tics” though.
idiot
Who is he making this project with? It’s a UA property so is MGM financing or taking a rights fee? Have thought this would be a great theatrical remake or television series for a long time.
I love this idea! Gosling actually has the chops to dance and sign. With Idol, The Voice, Beiber, etc… the time is right to tell this story. Yeah!
Yet another loser in hollywood who can’t think of any of their own ideas and has to remake someone else’s work. I’ve just lost all respect for him, not that I ever had much for him in the first place
Why so serious?
Yea just give every good looking actor a budget and let him direct. Let the crew make the film and his face sell tickets. That’s fucking art for ya. Hollywood is trash.
Gosling is unquestionably a real talent. He proved that in a number of films, although Blue Valentine was a relatively weak perf for his standard. Michelle Williams had a degree of in the moment truthfulness that was phenomenal and revealed some actorly moments by Ryan. But directing is a whole new deal, and many actors fail miserably when they direct. For every clooney, there are 100 nic cages. Personally i hope he hates directing and sticks to acting.
sell out.
¡Yo lo adoro!
Such an unnecessary, horrible idea. These remakes are getting more and more pathetic. Gosling wouldn’t have been fit to shine Ray Sharky’s shoes.
The people hating on Young Hercules better step off! He is talented and beautiful. He is the future of the industry. We need young men of his generation to step up and fill the void of the middle aged A-listers and Young Hercules is doing this admirably. When Depp is too bloated and broken to be wheeled out there anymore, who do you expect to be carrying movies? It will be Young Hercules and his peers.
