BREAKING: Sundance Selects acquired U.S. rights to Sleeping Beauty, the Julia Leigh-directed Cannes Film Festival pic that stars Emily Browning, Rachael Blake, Ewen Leslie, Peter Carroll and Chris Haywood, and was produced by Jessica Brentnall. The film premiered last Thursday and is described as the haunting portrait of a young university student drawn in to a mysterious world of unspoken desires. The film will be released in the fall.
Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects, said: “For the last five days, people throughout Cannes have been discussing Sleeping Beauty. We are thrilled to introduce Julia Leigh and her arresting debut to American audiences, and to continuing the discussion.”
UTA brokered the deal with Sundance Selects acquisitions exec Arianna Bocco. UTA reps Leigh and Browning, with the latter managed by Michael Aglion and Catherine Poulton in Australia. Sundance Selects is sister company to IFC, both owned by Rainbow Media.

Would this be the same ‘Sleeping Beauty’ which was given a loud moan/groan/sigh of relief as the end credits finished at the screening I attended? The film with the lowest score to date in Screen magazine’s Jury Grid, with an average of 1.5 points, collecting 6 ‘Average’s, 3 ‘Poor’s and a ‘Bad’? Why, I do believe it is!
Why do they call it “Sundance Selects” if it’s just a dumping ground for documentaries and foreign films?
So people won’t guess it’s a dumping ground for foreign films and documentaries?
The fact that this was never in Sundance kind of gives it away.
Emily Browning is going to be a huge star, and I’m not just talking about this film.
Sucker Punch.
No, she’s bland and her choices aren’t strong enough. If we have to choose the next big Aussie that’s Mia Wasikowska.
Would this be the “Sleeping Beauty” with the sicko premise that a young woman allows herself to be knocked out while men pay to have their way with her? Even the Brothers Grimm never envisioned such perversity. I hear there were plenty of boos at the Cannes screenings.
It is indeed the one and the same. The problem is that despite it offering even a sicko promise, it totally fails to deliver on that as well. Even perverts are going to be bored to death.
Isn’t this movie is about glamourizing ” prostitution “? Isn’t this college girl induced into a coma to be ” gang banged ” by 80 perverts? Wouldn’t that be ” rape” ? And at a time when NY beaches are scattered with ” body parts ” of ” college girls prostitutes ” every where…and the serial murderers are suspected to be ” cops “…killing college hookers….so why would any smart person who watches the news would invest in this garbage type of film? Don’t release it in NY because there are already too many body parts found of all college age girls to be hookers….this will only encourage the killers to kill more! Watch the news people!
There are no gang bangs, body parts, serial killers, murdered college hookers or cops in Sleeping Beauty whatsoever. More’s the pity, because then it would have been interesting. But you have a great imagination and I look forward to whatever films you make.
she’s a great star
