EXCLUSIVE: The majority of deal buzz at the Cannes Film Festival market is where the Megan Ellison-financed Wettest County in the World will be dealt for distribution, I’m told the next big deal to come together will be a Sony Pictures acquisition of Great Hope Springs, the David Frankel-directed Meryl Streep comedy from Mandate Pictures. I’ll have to get back to you on whether the studio bought more than domestic distribution rights, [UPDATE: I've heard in the neighborhood of $20 million for North American rights] but it’s being made in Hollywood and I’m told it dwarfs any deal that’ll be made here in Cannes. It’s a film Amy Pascal really wanted on her release schedule.
Streep and Tommy Lee Jones play one half of the troubled couple and Steve Carell plays the marriage therapist who tries to help rekindle their loveless relationship after 31 years of marriage. It’s their last shot before divorce. Vanessa Taylor wrote the script. Escape Artists’ Todd Black and Film 360′s Guymon Casady are producing. Shooting starts in August.
It is the second deal in recent days for a Meryl Streep film, after The Weinstein Company won a bidding battle Friday for Pathe’s The Iron Lady, shortly after buyers were shown five minutes of the film. Streep stars as Margaret Thatcher and Harvey Weinstein intends to make the film a focus of TWC’s Oscar season release schedule. Streep re-teams with her Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd.
Considering Hollywood’s fixation on young talent, isn’t it nice to see such a fuss made over an actress in her 60s, one who seems to score in just about every project she graces these days? In Great Hope Springs, Streep reteams with Frankel, her Devil Wears Prada director.

I agree, it’s always nice to see the kind of sough-after actress she has become after her sort of come back with The Hours and Adaptation, a comeback she pretty much solidified with that brilliant turn in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.
This news make me worried about AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY though, what’s going on with that? Is that still on the boards? Last I heard, from this website, that was scheduled to shoot this summer. Is this ever going to come together or is this one of those that’ll stay in limbo? I’d love to see her play Violet Weston.
Wake me when this shit is over
Meryl Streep is a sexy, talented woman. Good for her!
What I love hearing about this is she’s hotter than all those young anorexic wanna bes that think they’re actresses. Meryl is the best .She just keeps coming back better and better .And she seems to pick things that with someone else wouldn’t be a hit. And what did happen to AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY ?
Love me some Meryl.
Meryl Streep is no ordinary film actress. She personifies greatness, dignity, and prestige in any role she portrays. She also doesn’t take herself too seriously. I can’t wait to see her in “Iron Lady.” A film role she can really sink her teeth into. Her best acting years are ahead of her which is scary for her contemporaries. Master class all the way!
“Streep and Tommy Lee Jones play one half of the troubled couple ”
who plays the other half?
edit hurriedly much?
Why does a bottle of 1982 Petruse cost over $10,000 a bottle? Because it is the best red wine you’ll ever taste in your life….why does a bottle of Merlot 20011 cost about $ 20.00? Because it is the worst red wine you’ll ever taste in your life! So some of us age like ” fine wine ”
and Meryl Streep is the fine wine, she’s beyond talented and respected in the industry for her craft….you’re talking quality verses youth, it doesn’t matter….a young actor or actress can lead a movie right into $$$$ losses….but the great, talented, and quality make people $$$$$, age doesn’t matter! Look at Anthony Hopkins as well, how long his career is and how much he still works, no one thinks about all the young , un talented actors with hard abs, the second Anthony Hopkins appear! The same for women! Meryl Streep enters and no one notices the young dingbats with no talent! These are real actors, not wannabe actors or ” made products ” of Hollywood! Just like picking a doctor, you wouldn’t pick someone so green to help you with your problems, but a seasoned doctor, probably older with more experience who can do the job right!:)
Speak for yourself…..give me Daniel Craig in a bathing suit anyday!
Can someone please tell me why this deal would be made at Cannes instead of in the States where deals such as this are usually made. Has the movie been independently financed and this is a pick-up? I thought Escape Artists was a term deal at Sony. Why wouldn’t Sony have a first look at a project like this since they’ve supported the company for years? Can someone explain?
Why do we take these actors so seriously that we have to pay them millions of dollars. This is not what its all about. Wake up.
