It is not last year’s bloodbath when CBS canceled seven series, but the network did some bloodletting today with the demise of freshmen The Defenders, $#*! My Dad Says and Mad Love. They join midseason drama Chaos, which was canceled after a couple of weeks on the air. From the freshman class of 2011, still fighting for its life is spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, while Mike & Molly, Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods are locks to return. Not being featured on the cancellation list today is certainly an encouraging sign for the chances of Suspect Behavior, which may undergo some retooling if renewed.

No great loss.
Agreed. It’s too bad that SHIT MY DAD SAYS was such an embarrassment, Justin Halpern’s Twitter and book are funny as shit. David and Max, along with CBS, had to work really hard to screw up that kind of built in audience and hilarious source material.
I’m a big fan of the show ‘shit my dad says’ and ‘criminal minds suspect behaver’ were 2 of my favorite shows, this is very upsetting to me please don’t take my shows off the air.
Mad Love is a great show and it is a shame that they are cancelling it before it ever had a chance. If it didn’t get the ratings that they were hoping for then they should have put it out there more! I rarely saw any previews for the show during the week. I know if I told anyone about the show, their response is that they had never heard of it. I think that CBS is making a huge mistake by cancelling this show! Honestly, Monday is the only night of the week that we watch this network and we loved all of the shows from the 8:00 to 10:00 time slot. Who knows, maybe we will just switch all of our Monday night shows since you took my favorite!!!
I definitely agree. This was a great show with potential. I was so shocked to see it cancelled. It was more interesting than How I Met Your Mother (which we watch but sometimes the storyline goes nowhere) Watching the last episode was very sad- I want more of this show!! Whatever show they’re replacing it with, I’m definitely banning it.
There are very few shows worth watching these days. The Defenders was entertaining. The network screwed around with their air time and then cancelled it – bad decision. I’m disappointed!!
I agree about the comment made on The Defenders. I enjoyed the show very much. It was a great line up on friday nights. You never really gave The Defenders a chance. It’s a shame.
Me too. Seems like they don’t give these good shows a chance.
I am so upset about the cancellation of THE DEFENDERS. I loved it and love Belushi. Just don’t get it and really upset.
Then you obviously don’t know him that well. He deserves it – he treats the crew like absolute $%@#. He has no respect for anyone. I feel bad for the crew members who are now out of a job and need every check to support their families. Jim doesn’t need anymore money to blow up his head more than it already is.
I agree. The defender’s were far better than it had a right to be. I really enjoyed it. I also wished they would have kept Mad Love on for one more year. I watched it at the start of the year because it was on next. Now I watch it because I really enjoy the show.
Bummer. I liked the Defenders.
I think I’m going to quit watching new shows and just download them off the internet if they don’t get cancelled after one season.
Using Ms Griffin in the last program really did the series in. She is hated by far to many and the story line had a bad ending in the mind of many viewers.
What the fuck are you talking about…Ms Griffin. There was no Ms Griffin in the last show.
Once again body parts and sex outweigh a good fun script with lots of twists and turns that the whole family can enjoy together. I could actually recommend this show to anyone knowing they would love it. Bummer.
Weird, thought SHIT MY DAD SAYS was doing well in the ratings.
I agree I really liked the defenders, great scripts, great actors,I wonder what these execs are lookn at,give the damn show a chance!!!!
They sure don’t give shows on network TV time to bloom like cable do.
How can they cancel The Defenders?! That show was so fun, fast paced, nice twists and great ” chemistry” between Belushi and O’Connell. I don’t get it…
Sadly the numbers just weren’t there. Unlike certain other networks, CBS is all about the numbers.
I just hope The Good Wife makes the cut.
I loved the defenders. My guilty pleasure. It was bad but it was soo good. I’m sorry they cancelled. The two of them made a great team!!!!
Sounds like you Hollywood nurds are spoiling it for all us viewers, loved the Defendents but I think these exutives are running their busness like the Democrates are running our country (TO THE GROUND) TV sure isn’t what it used to be.
Well said! Agree completely.
wowww i coulda bet they would cancel $#*! that thing looked like it had no potentialll but they coulda let it have 1 more season??!??!!
What about The Good Wife?
I hope that no news is good news in this case.
I give up. These networks promote, promote, promote their ‘new’ fall series line-ups, but have no patience in allowing any new series to get a toe-hold. Whatever CBS, ABC or Fox dredges up this year, none of them will be given time to succeed. It’s a good thing all of these network bosses weren’t around when ‘Seinfeld’ was struggling.
It’s maddening. ‘The Defenders’ hasn’t been on for weeks, neither has ##@ My Dad Says, so how can they prove their worth? NBC put “Law And Order: Los Angeles” on Saturday night! Isn’t that where they put TV shows to die? But ABC has to be the worst for putting a show on for a couple of weeks, yanking it off for 3 months, putting it back on, etc. “V” never had a chance.
I’m not going to fall for this crapola anymore.
Defenders and $h*! My Dad Says both aired 18 episodes, which is quite a few. And CBS supposedly has “no patience”? Both shows sucked butt. I think it’s a wonder those stinkers made it on the air in the first place, and you’re whining that they didn’t get enough time? HA HA HA HA HA!
As for LOLA, it aired RERUNS on Sat. night while it was on hiatus. Its regular time was originally Wed., where it crapped out. It was retooled and relaunched to give it another chance, and it immediately crapped out on Monday. Other shows that aired in those same time slots did much better.
V ran straight through Jan. 4 to March 15 this year and had every chance to pick up viewers. It didn’t. Cry me a river, babe, it deserved to get canned!
Blue Bloods! Glad it’s returning, it definitely deserves a second season!
What was Mad Love? Did it air more than once?
It aired about ten times. The fact that you didn’t notice it, ever, speaks to its ineffectiveness.
Whether they admit it or not, when J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman came up with the alternative reality idea, they automatically came up with a way to include William Shatner in the Star Trek film series. As this is an alternative reality, this new James Kirk can go on to live a long, full, rich and happy life, get married and have a family. A flashforward of an old James Kirk played by William Shatner would suffice just like when Harrison Ford made a special guest appearance on The Indiana Jones Chronicles television series.
Take the Defenders to some other network. Surely someone can position it to win.
Who would want that dud?
Happy to see SHIT cancelled. Kohan, Mutchnick, and the CBS team behind that show screwed up every step of the way. For the writers who couldn’t get their voices heard, for the two actors recast from the pilot for no reason, for fans of the Twitter feed, for Will and Nicole who had to carry the load, and for tv viewers across the country: JUSTICE AT LAST!
Schadenfreude perhaps, but not justice. Justin Halpern’s book was great, it should have made a terrific series, so it’s a real shame that the show was so botched.
Except for that whole impressive ratings thing. The original cast was a bore and Kohan/Mutchnick handled the transition like pros. Had they not changed lead actors it probably wouldnt have lasted the season. They’ll be back with more.
Impressive ratings? I believe the show just got cancelled. Yep, just checked again, it’s cancelled. Kohan/Mutchnick haven’t had a hit since that one show they did a decade ago that was based on their own lives. The term one-hit-wonder was tailor made for those guys. Bring on better TV!
You’re delusional. They have over 100 hours of TV under their belt. They’re two of the most talented writers available with a rich overall. And that ” one hit” you talk about, just how many have you had exactly? You sound like a bitter fired actor.
You’re so hilariously in the pocket of Max, David, and CBS it’s only mildly entertaining to engage in this conversation with you, but what the hell, I’m bored. You never refuted the fact that they’ve only had one hit. A decade ago. Believe me, I’d take that money in a second, I’m just saying that they’re having a really tough time recreating anything near that, and it’s made them bitter. Those guys have made many enemies and very few friends in this town. Ask around. And to squander such a gift like the Twitter feed that Justin Halpern laid at their feet… well, that’s just plain pathetic. They need to get back to what they do best (Will And Grace Part II perhaps?) and treat their crew better. Otherwise they won’t have a chance to ruin much more television because nobody will agree to work with them.
Truthman, it doesn’t matter how many “hits” another commenter has. He or she is still allowed to criticize showrunners for their inability to have more than one, despite being given numerous opportunities. I guarantee you that the previous commenter never had a major studio give him or her a pilot based on a brilliant, hilarious Twitter feed. They’ve had their chances.
It doesn’t matter if the previous commenter has a “hit” or not… he or she is still entitled to criticize ineffective showrunners who’ve been given numerous opportunities to produce hits, and only succeeded once. Even if the previous commenter never had a hit, he or she probably also never had a network hand him or her a hilarious twitter feed to make a pilot out of.
What about The Good Wife? I hope it won’t be cancelled! This waiting is killing me
Hopefully The Good Wife will be renewed
. I’m waiting for the good news! I don’t watch many TV series due to lack of time, but TGW is among the few chosen ones.
Are we witnessing the fall of network television as we know it right before our eyes? The last 10 or so years have been the most chaotic years, probably since the early days of TV. The network television industry as is just isn’t working in the best interest of it’s consumers anymore. How do they expect a show to become successful if they don’t develop it and give it time to grow. This is exactly what happened to the music industry, they’ve thrown out the traditional methods like talent development and grooming and now they just through anyone out into the mainstream in hopes that it sticks. The Defenders wasn’t great but it definitely had legs and could have easily gained in popularity after a few adjustments here and there. The industry just doesn’t get it anymore. Things are changing… and I love it!
Networks don’t give shows time anymore? That is all NBC does. OUTSOURCED got a whole season and it was bad. 30 Rock still has weak number but they keep getting more and more seasons. Yes, the successful networks like CBS don’t have as much patience, but why should they? They want top show and are in a position to cancel average shows. Yes, the industry has changed. But what Network has lost cable has gained. Most of my favorite shows are on AMC, USA, HBO, etc.
Does that mean that CSI NY has been renewed?
Yeah!?!? What about CSI-NY, Les? There are only a couple hundred people waiting to see if they have jobs. Nothing like waiting ’til the last minute.
Good riddance to Sh*t My Dad Says. This poorly executed series should have been cancelled long ago. If I was Justin Halpern I’d pretend this travesty never happened.
I kinda liked Mad Love. ok, It wasn’t an exceptionally good show, but still, I thought it was entertaining…
I agree, I thought mad love had potential to grow and develop characters.
The Defenders was one of a short list of shows on my DVR. What happened to the days when executives would let a show build an audience? Great scripts and chemistry between the leads, I hope they can find another home for this show.
YOU SUCK CBS — you had a potential hit on your hands with MAD LOVE — it was one of the best sitcoms on the air. Big bang theory started with those numbers and you nurtured it. It should have at least gotten a 13 episode order
the defenders did well on fridays, but they won’t admit that and will try something else that will get lower ratings.
Agreed. Thought Mad Love was good and had lots of potential. Bummer.
It had great potential until they cast Tyler Labine, a guaranteed show killer if there ever was one!
He ruined Reaper & that Invasion series.
The guy is just annoying beyond belief!
Poor Judy Greer, she’s been wonderful in everything she’s been in, but saddled with talentless co-stars.
I still haven’t forgiven CBS for canceling “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”
Guess it’s a clean sweep for all my bubble shows which I hoped would get renewed — brothers and sisters, better with you and now mad love. Ugh, I hate it when such great shows don’t get renewed yet shows like chuck with its low ratings gets another shot, not to mention all of nbc’s thursday comedies.
Mad Love was something unique — it was actually Laugh out loud funny.
Now maybe all these Mad Love plants always screaming about a show nobody’s even seen will shut the fu** up.
