EXCLUSIVE: Justin Reardon, whose highlights in commercials include co-creating (and serving as the art director) on the memorable Wassup! and the Howaydoin’ campaigns for Budweiser, will make his feature directing debut on Convention, a comedy that will be sold at the Cannes Film Festival by Hollywood Studios International. Scripted by Christopher Painter (The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius) and produced by Paul Schiff and Tai Duncan, Convention takes place at a national packaging convention, where an underachieving inventor unveils his latest creation — the 5-sided box. It seems like a game-changing innovation, until the inventor learns that each time he makes the special fold involved in assembling the box, he’s ripping a small hole in the universe. If the invention takes hold, it might end the world. The film will begin production in the fall, with HSI chairman/CEO Steven Saxton and HSI president Eric Christenson exec producing. ICM and Richard Arlook rep Reardon; Painter’s repped by Kaplan/Perrone. Here’s a reminder of the Wassup! campaign:

Needed the reminder, that campaign is so old.
I LOVE that concept. Sounds like great fun. I hope it sees the light of day.
Justin Reardon is so freaking talented. This guy is poised to be the next Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry. He just did a hilarious short film that is making the rounds of festivals called ZOLTAN: THE HUNGARIAN GANGSTER OF LOVE. Check it out if you can track it down.
That will sell like hotcakes: no cast, first time director, no name company. Huge!
Hey douchbag – Justin and the script will attract a great cast, and the people behind this company have been around forever and have great reputations. Don’t worry. There are plenty of generic action thrillers starring Jason Statham being made for you and your limited intellect.
Justin reardon is the best untapped commercial talent around. Just like Reuben Fleischer, he will pop big. Way to go Tai. Relentless and passionate!
Uh… Director Chuck Stone created the “Wassup” campaign, thankyouverymuch. He created it and then sold it to Budweiser, no less. I din’t know the art director gets credit for “co-creating”… Just sayin’.
Sorry. Charles Stone III.
Actually– the campaign was derived from Charles Stone’s short film. I know first hand because I used to work at the advertising agency that did the campaign. The advertising creatives sold the idea of the campaign to Bud after seeing the 3 minute short and then brought Charles Stone on board to act in it and direct it. The first spot that aired was similar to the short film — but all of the rest of the spots were written by Vinny Warren and Justin Riordan. Charles made a very funny short film but he didn’t write the “advertising campaign” that came from it. Sort of like saying that Orwell, the author of the famous novel 1984 also wrote the classic Apple Macintosh Ad 1984.
This sounds like a movie to actually look forward to.
I recently met Justin, at an audition, and I love him already! He has a great, calm energy that makes you feel like he has everything under control! I got cast in a new promo. Campaign that he’s directing for the NFL! It should be a fun gig! We shoot this week. It’s a promo for Thursday night football!
I’m excited!
Did a bavaria beer commercial with Justin a few years back – he is larger than life – what a man – i have the utmost respect for him and wish him well with his journey ahead – VIVA JUSTIN
Justin is amazing to work with. He respects the organic process of film-making by allowing artists (both on and off camera) to bring their creativity to the table. He is strong and focused, yet gentle and open to the things that make film “art”. He deserves great success, and I would be honored to work with him in his future endeavors..
