Brothers and Sisters showrunner David Marshall Grant has joined NBC’s new drama series Smash as an executive producer. He will help creator/executive producer Theresa Rebeck, a playwright and screenwriter. “I couldn’t have asked for a better partner,” Rebeck said. Based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, Smash chronicles the creation of a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, written by the successful songwriting duo of Tom (Christian Borle) and Julia (Debra Messing), who was based on Rebeck. Like Rebeck, Grant also has playwright background. Additionally, he has Broadway acting experience and was nominated for a Tony in 1994 for Angels in America. He joined Brothers and Sisters in Season 2 and served as showrunner for the past two seasons. On Smash, Grant will serve as an executive producer alongside Rebeck, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.

There isn’t a nicer, classier, more talented guy out there. Congrats, DMG!
They could not possibly have hired a better dude for the gig.
Congrats to DMG! Smash is lucky to have him!
This is a perfect fit! DMG’s the best – and the greatest guy to work with!
I wasn’t going to watch this because of the participation of Katherine McPhee but the involvement of David Marshall Grant changes my mind. I thought he did a good job with Brothers and Sisters this year and liked the last episode he wrote with David Babcock.
DMG might be the greatest guy in the business but anyone who watched Brothers & Sisters this past year has to admit it was flat out awful. Every character stretched credibility and the story telling as a whole was beyond boring and stale. Hope DMG has been keeping his fastball in his pocket for Smash because if his work on B&S was all he’s got then this new series for NBC is in trouble. The final B&S episode with the entire family doing a Motown song and dance act at the wedding was pure 70′s Brady Bunch! Sorry.
Excellent DMG!!
Congrats !!!
I am excited for you!!
Seb
My first professional job as an actor was with David.
He’s a really talented guy (and smart). If anyone can save the show it’s this guy.
