David O Russell is no longer developing Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. He’s stepped out of the project. Since getting the Oscar accolades on The Fighter, Russell has been juggling a number of projects. Sony Pictures is getting a new writer to work from the draft done by Thomas Dean Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer. Studio’s still keen on the picture.

Honestly, they should hire Sean Flanagan.
He’s written two great scripts and he’s only 25. He just needs to get his big break and I think Uncharted could be it for him.
If you had a better agent, their assistant would post these comments for you.
I cunt seem to find any credits on imdb for Sean Flanagan. What produced scripts does he have that a studio would hire him on a multi-million dollar film?
@^ Umm, who the hell is Sean Flanagan? Besides, obviously, you. Stop doing a crappy job self-promoting.
2 scripts at 25 is not that impressive, Sean.
Well put John, I mean Sean
Let’s hope this means that rumored star Mark Wahlberg is exiting too.
Good, maybe this means Mark Wahlberg will exit and then Nathan Filion can take his place
I was about to post the EXACT same thing word-for-word!!
Ruh-roh, who let the LA Film School students like Sean who? Post on here? Must be free Internet day.
David O. Russell is a mad genius.
Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are such amazing, amazing games – not only in terms of gameplay, but also with story, dialogue, and even character. Always seemed difficult to translate that into the film genre, in the sense that it’s already a realized cinematic experience. Will be interesting to see how the new team does it.
YES!
Now just bring Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion!
So true, that would be an amazing match up for this!
Too bad Whedon’s busy with the Avengers. But I’m all up for Fillion as Drake!
Time for Fillion.
This is kind of good news. I can’t say that I am disappointed that David O. Russell is not directing. He’s better than some videogame adaptation. Although I am sure he would make it awesome, I want another David O. Russell original movie like “Flirting with Disaster.”
Too bad, I like David O. But I’m one of those who didn’t like the Mark Wahlberg choice.
Hopefully David drags him to whatever other project he’s developing.
Fillion would be interesting. He’d have to get in shape.
Could be a nice chance to make a star of someone new perhaps…
Russell exits so a new writer must be hired. Love how it’s always the script’s fault.
Best news I’ve heard all day. Hopefully he’ll take Marky Mark with him.
Huzzah! This beloved videogame series still has a chance at greatness!
Terrific news. Russell’s take on the source material was offensively off the mark.
Thank god. His idea of having Wahlberg. DeNiro, & Pesci going around treasure hunting was a joke. Why even call it Uncharted. Now they can get a better Nathan and bring Sully in as well. Maybe then we can have a movie that has the essence of the old Indiana Jones movies minus old man Lucas and his crazy insistence of an alien plot-line. This could be good after all.
Michael, why do you have such a fascination with David O. Russell? In his illustrious 25 year career, “O’Russell” has directed a total of only 7 full length films (including one documentary), and one of the films (Nailed) was so bad that it was never finished or released despite being 95% completed (had it been half way decent another financier would have paid to have it finished, so don’t blame the lack of financing for its failure). He is very far from a box office sensation. And ask anyone involved in the first of his two commercial successes, and they will tell you it was the stellar cast of Three Kings that made it was it was, despite “O’Russell’s” temper tantrums and fighting on the set. As with Three Kings, the fact that The Fighter turned out pretty good is the result of an amazing cast (one of whom lived this film for a decade), not “O’Russell’s” efforts.
He is a B- talent and an F- human being. He should crawl back into the cesspool from whence he came.
“O’Russell” is a complete low life, physically fighting with one actor (Clooney) on set; having a complete melt down and screaming at Lily Tomlim over and over again, who was 65 years old at the time for God’s sake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMVILMo1Cq0); having actors quit in the middle of films he was directing; and the list goes on and on. And that is just on set. The stories of his off set behavior make his on set activities look like those of a choir boy. To the extent people know him, he is one of the most disliked people in Hollywood, and rightfully so. Yet Michael, you have this strange fascination with him, and write about him whenever you have the chance — do you look at car crashes on the freeway as well? You have always been such a great writer, so I just don’t get it.
Russell does great work, but his altering of the source material worried me. Ideally, he could have strayed from his take of the story and stayed on to direct. Hopefully a talented director can take the helm. Some games deserve great adaptations. Max Payne was one, but it was directed by a hack. Someone that plays and understands the tone and mood of the games should be brought on. Give the fans what they want. I also want Nate Fillion, but realistically, the studio will want someone with some star power to carry the picture. I don’t have a really good suggestion. Any ideas?
Everybody stop it with the Nathan Fillion. Yes, he’s a super-nice cool guy. He’s also a slightly doughy forty-year-old TV star who will NOT GET CAST IN THIS. Back to reality…
You do realize that Pierce Brosnan was 41 years old when Goldeneye was being shot right?
Fillion is also not that out of shape. He was in good shape for Firefly and as Captain Hammer he wasn’t bad looking. Just saying there is precedent for him looking in shape. If he got the role, he’d have plenty of time to get a personal trainer.
His muscle gain could even provide new material for Castle episodes. There’s a good deal of upside here.
Awesome news. Give the fans what they want for this brilliant video game franchise. A good script DIRECTLY from the games and Nathan Fillion, couldnt hurt either.
Yessss. I’m LOVING all of the love for Nathan Fillion. He would be so great.
Sean Flanagan? Wasn’t he in Boondock Saints?
As regards Russell: Buyer beware. Sony et al should have known he’d never follow through. He took the job for the pay day and then jumped ship as soon as he was elevated by Oscar. Par for the course with this guy.
fuck joss whedon buffy is some tween shit firefly dollhouse they get cancelled cuz they are bad boring shit fanboy shit.
Russell got too busy juggling other projects? Elsewhere the reason stated was ‘creative differences’ whatever they are. Arguing over the script already?
(Will Mark Wahlberg go too? Was he even hired in the first place? There seems to be contradictory things being said.)
Go for a new guy right across the board. They won’t let you down.
I’d like to see Joe Flanigan given a chance for the role of Nathan Drake. He’s the new Harrison Ford but no one seems to see that. Early forties and too old? But he don’t look it! Action? Piece of cake…
It would be good to see Joe Flanigan as Nathan Drake. He’d be perfect for this role – and he looks like this guy from the computer game
I have recently watched Joe Flanigan in Good Day For It – he truly made his Deputy Brady’s part into an Oscar performance.
Joe Flanigan would be perfect in the role. Perfect.
I love Nathan Fillion, but not for this.
