Disney will release a 3D version of its classic 1994 animated blockbuster The Lion King on Sept. 16, 2011, the studio announced today. It follows the trend of high-profile library fare getting extra-dimensional face-lifts (the studio upgraded its first two Toy Story films ahead of Toy Story 3), the latest being Fox’s recent announcement that it will present Titanic in 3D on April 6, 2012.
Disney also said today that its 3D John Carter Of Mars has a new title: John Carter. The release date for the sci-fi actioner starring Taylor Kitsch remains March 9, 2012.

Better jump on the 3D wagon quickly ’cause that scam is starting to fade.
Hey at least they’re bringing back THE greatest animated movie of all time in theaters. I saw it opening night in 1994, and about 12 times after that I’ll probably see it at least four or 5 times. t his time
Yeah I know…..though it’s doing well worldwide, ‘Pirates’ is tanking here in the US because of 3D….awesome concept but man is it killing my eyes!!!!!
This will be a very interesting experiment, because a “traditional animation” film has never been converted to 3D before. It’s one thing for old Pixar movies to convert, since the way they’re created is almost as if they were filmed in 3D to begin with — but very different for a movie like The Lion King which (aside from brief sequences) was not born that way.
I’m not into 3D, but I love the releasing of these movies into the theaters again.
I’d go see all of the Harry Potter flicks, and a slew of others.
Disney renaming John Carter of Mars to just John Carter is a pretty stupid decision. Makes it sound so generic where leaving “of Mars” makes it so much more unique and identifiable. John Carter could be a Michael Caine heist movie, John Carter of Mars instantly tells you that this is a space/fantasy movie. Stupid Stupid Stupid Disney!
Will Katzenberg get any moneys from the 3D version of the LC ?
well this should be interesting… the reason live action 3D movies (like clash of the titans and POTC 4) suck is because they do the 3D after filming. They cut out each character and separate them from the background like in a diorama. Unfortunately, this darkens the film as well. While this process does trick our brains into believing it is a 3 dimensional scene, it just looks weird. Other movies that are actually *FILMED* in 3D (Avatar and Coraline) look amazing because each and every curved and flat surface stands out. Since this movie was completed 16 years ago, they’ll be doing cutouts, but perhaps we’ll be pleasantly surprised? After all, it is 2D animation, so cutting images out should do something towards good.
Whilst I completely agree with the point you are making, you are unfortunately mistaken regarding Pirates Of The Caribbean being post-converted to 3D. The film was supposedly filmed with 3D cameras. However, after seeing it myself, I suspect a good percentage of the movie was post-converted. Even Avatar had scenes that were not native 3D.
As another has already said – Pirates is doing exceptionally well overseas. It currently stands at $624 million worldwide – and that’s after what, less than 2 weeks in cinemas? The only let-down with regards to Pirates is the domestic take. The international total is growing quite well.
this disgusts me
John Carter of Mars is a series of books. He does not earn the title “of Mars” until later in the series, this is the first film based on the first book so it is justified.
