E! has renewed After Lately, the mocumentary set behind the scenes of Chelsea Handler’s late-night show for the network, Chelsea Lately. Production on Season 2 of the reality/improv series is set to begin shortly. After Lately wrapped its first season April 24, averaging nearly 1 million total viewers each week and improving the 11 PM slot by 50%. “This series is comedic to its core and showcases Chelsea and her hilarious team in a fun and innovative way,” said Lisa Berger, E!’s president of entertainment programming. In addition to Handler, the cast of the show includes Chuy Bravo, Sarah Colonna, Brad Wollack, Chris Franjola, Heather McDonald, Jeff Wild, Johnny Kansas, Steve Marmalstein and Chelsea’s brother Roy. After Lately is executive produced by Chelsea Handler and Tom Brunelle.

Yay!!! I love Chelsea. She is more entertaining than those whiny Kardashians.
Listen up – they have to keep Chelsea and her staff working and happy. But, to make this work, they should turn this show into a female version of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” … make the characters stronger and clear. Do some “writing” since it’s improv mostly w/ loose story lines. Hire some Curb writers and above all make Chelsea a unique, funny and driven character.
This show got a pickup in the first place BECAUSE of how Chelsea is. Herself. Changing it would be inauthentic. We can’t have two different versions of her (one on her talk show and one on AFTER LATELY). So glad it was picked up! The Reese Witherspoon episode was particularly hilarious!
I too was feeling trepidation about A.L, but it really is slyly funny. The writers are half-actors tis true – there’s still something funny about them ACTING like they aren’t. And the g-stars are clearly having a good time there. And Chuy is the same hapless & smart assistant here as he is on the Live show.
“After Lately” portrays a Bizarro World of “The Office”: Strong women, weak men, actually FUNNY situations.
Chelsea’s a mean “Michael Scott”, Sarah her ass-kissing “Dwight”, etc.
In real life, Chelsea’s just a mean-spirited as Seinfeld or Larry David-though hardly as funny.
“After Lately” proves one thing: Like Seinfeld and David, it takes a self-loathing, miserable, egocentric person to make a great TV sitcom.
