Law & Order veteran Ed Zuckerman, who most recently ran ABC’s legal drama The Whole Truth last season, has been tapped as the new showrunner on CBS’ Blue Bloods, which has not been officially renewed but is coming back next season. Zuckerman will succeed the series’ creators Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green who have exited at the end of this season. Zuckerman’s strong procedural background (he spent 14 years on Law & Order and also worked on JAG and L&O: Criminal Intent) confirms CBS’ desire to take the cop/family drama in a more procedural direction next season.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Unfortunate that CBS made the show so unhospitable to the people who created it and made it a hit.
Why didn’t Leonard Goldberg (on the board of CBS — conflict of interest? I think so…) protect his investment?
This show is NOT like Law and Order which is why it’s a hit.
CBS clearly thinks they can make it a bigger hit by making it more procedural.
Can someone tell Tom Selleck to ease up on the hair dye?
That’s all.
The Show is too much of an procedural already. They should’ve gone in to the opposite direction, because Donnie Wahlberg’s cases of the week, weren’t that good.
Well, that’s one less show I can look forward, too. Television is getting more unwatchable as time goes by. Copycat shows tell us (the viewers) how devoid of imagination these TV people really are. NCIS CSI SUV my ass!
The strength of BLUE BLOODS has primarily been in the family dynamics. This is disappointing news and truly makes no sense. Why tinker with a ratings hit that enjoyed a loyal viewership AND sold well internationally? If CBS brass needs to micro-manage, start with the dreadful CSI franchise. They represent three hours of some of the most poorly written prime time dramas!
Spoken like a wannabe or out of work writer.
You’re a whining idiot probably in love with procedurals. More likely a troll. You don’t have to be a writer to be bored with their exceptionally brain deadening, lazy writing.
I agree with JJSalem. I enjoy Blue Bloods as an attempt at family dynamics, and characterizations. Nice change from the robo scientists/cops/detectives. If this goes procedural, I will not be watching any longer.
I’m disappointed that The Chicago Code got axed as well for the same reason I loved it- people dynamics.
I loved Blue Bloods because it wasn’t just another procedural. So disappointed they’re turning it into one.
Let’s hope they see some thing in your comment.
This is why we watch it.
I also agree that CSI needs new writers.
So I guess they’ll announce the renewal tomorrow which I’m happy about. I just worry this show will come back a completely different show. Not a huge fan of procedurals.
I agree with the previous posts. The family dynamic and the good writing make this show stand out. Last Friday’s episode was the best of the season. Great payoff to a strong freshman season.
Makes sense, take a well written, well thought out show and make it into a copy of every other crappy cop show out there. No one will ever accuse TPTB in Hollywood of being all THAT bright.
The show will do fine as long as they do not abandon the family thing entirely.
Please do not change the format of Blue Blood. I enjoy seeing the family interaction.
Awesome news about the renewal. Not so great news about the procedural-crazed showrunner to-be.
Here’s hoping they go with MORE family stories and flesh out the Regan women a bit more; I love the show but sometimes the women seem an afterthought.
I’d also like to see more of Danny’s marriage; it’s not easy to keep a cop family functioning and his wife seems to have given up a lot. It’d be cool to see her struggling with this.
There’s not a writer in Hollywood, or anywhere else for that matter, that is as talented, well read, clever, or brilliant as Ed Zuckerman thinks he is.
As long as they don’t have every show focus on the Donnie/Jackie case of the week. They need to focus more on the family and also get Selleck front and center more often.
I thought it was too procedural already. I’d rather have more focus on the family. Glad it’s coming back though.
The perfect template on how to balance Family/Procedural is NUMB3RS.
The last few years of Numbers sucked.
They EXITED? You can’t have it both ways — complain that CBS tossed them then claim they decided to EXIT. These two knishes were fired. Plain and simple. Just like on their last show at HBO.
All this talk about “procedural” is a smoke screen; CBS trying to be diplomatic. And also trying to not look stupid for hiring the confused and clueless to begin with.
CBS wanted them gone in October but didn’t want them walking away with the fat pay or play money like they did at at HBO. Failure can be fun! And profitable too!
Or, as in this latest case, not.
Selleck wants procedurals.
That’s a mistake. What makes Blue Bloods interesting is the family element and dynamic — turning it into Just Another Procedural will make it just another face in the procedural crowd.
Too bad. The family dynamics are what is interesting about the show. Multi-generational, siblings with different POVs. That’s interesting. Another procedural is a bore and let’s face no one does procedurals as well as L&O and CSI.
