FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker will become SVP of Governmental Affairs at NBCUniversal after her term ends at the agency in June, Comcast announced today. Baker, a Republican member of the FCC who voted in favor of the recent Comcast-NBCU merger, is the latest big name to join Comcast’s Washington lobbying team; former NCTA boss Kyle McSlarrow was hired as president of Comcast/NBCU in DC in March. “Commissioner Baker is one of the nation’s leading authorities on communications policy, and we’re thrilled she’s agreed to head the government relations operations for NBCUniversal,” McSlarrow said. “Meredith’s executive branch and business experience along with her exceptional relationships in Washington bring Comcast and NBCUniversal the perfect combination of skills.” Baker will report to McSlarrow and will work closely with Rick Cotton, NBCUniversal’s EVP and General Counsel, who continues to set strategic policy direction for NBCU. Reactions to the move already are coming in.
“With a winning combination of integrity, intellect and experience, Meredith Baker will be a key player for NBCUniversal, and I know that her in-depth knowledge of broadcast issues, deep understanding of the D.C. landscape and strong leadership abilities will make her an important resource for the entire broadcast industry,” said National Association of Broadcasters chief Gordon Smith.
Said Media Access Project’s Andrew Jay Schwartzman: “Commissioner Baker has been a consummate public servant. While her viewpoints have often differed from ours, she has always been open-minded, conscientious and dedicated to acting in the public interest as she saw it.”

This is how you get politicians and regulators to violate the law and vote for your antitrust-triggering merger — promise them cushy, lucrative lobbying jobs as soon as their terms end. And we wonder why the economy collapsed.
Exactly!
How is this ethical? How is this not a payoff?
No wonder the United States is becoming a third world nation–our corruption is flagrantly out in the open and unapologetic.
“When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that justifies it.” Frederic Bastiat
So the fix was in and now it’s payback time.
The best government money can buy, eh?
collusion much?
Anyone else surprised? Yeah, me neither. Keep smiling honey.
“Keep that smile on your face, with a smile you’re welcome anyplace!”
When was the job offer made? Did she recuse herself from voting on any issues related to the company after the offer?
Just curious.
She’s a Republican, everyone at MSNBC must be pissed.
Anyone with any sense would be.
There needs to be a law against this.
Unfortunately the people we depend on to pass such laws are the very ones doing this garbage. Sigh.
%$#@^!& disgusting.
While at Comcast, she’ll know doubt push for more data caps, Internet tiering, and other fuck-the-subscribers measures.
What’s interesting is that the FCC has always been on the side of net neutrality, which was shot down by the courts, with Comcast claiming victory. I would assume that Comcast needs someone like Baker on its side because the net neutrality battle is far from over.
This is crazy – I already can see my monthly cable/Internet bill going up.
This is criminal. Someone at the Justice Dept. needs to get on the stick. Absolutely disgusting.
I didn’t know how Comcast could get any lower at this point. What a wretched company.
The sad thing is they don’t even wait until she leaves office to announce this. What a slap in the face!
Exactly. Disgusting.
exactly! couldn’t have said it better. these people have no souls. we need to speak out against these injustices. these people essentially control and influence our lives and their loyalty is to the Almighty dollar.
