EXCLUSIVE: In what shapes up as the first major acquisition of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, The Weinstein Company is near a deal to acquire U.S. and multiple international territories on The Artist, a black-and-white silent film that is written and produced by Michel Hazanavicius. The picture premieres in competition on Sunday, but I’m told several buyers chased the rights through Wild Bunch. The deal is low-seven-figure minimum guarantee, and the plan is to release the film later this year during the Oscar race.
The pic stars Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell, Missi Pyle and Penelope Ann Miller. The pic takes place in 1927 Hollywood and focuses on a silent movie star whose career seems about to be ended because of the arrival of the talkies. At the same time, a pretty young extra sees the new format as an opportunity to launch her star. No official confirmation was forthcoming from The Weinstein Company. The film was a late entry to the Cannes competition but the first to make a sales splash.

This sounds very interesting! It must be REALLY good if The Weinsteins plan on putting it out during awards season!
Dujardin and Bejo co-starred in OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, which is highly recommended if you like spoof movies.
I hope they’re not actually expecting to make money on it. ‘Cus if Kirsten Dunst couldn’t sell that era to a younger crowd w/ The Cat’s Meow, I doubt Harvey’s gonna do any better.
Black and white and SILENT? How did this film get made let alone sold! Sounds interesting, but, c’mon, do they really expect to make any money from this film? I’m just saying…
Michael – Silent films are alive and well. Kino International’s “Metropolis” (also “Black and white and SILENT”) has grossed $1,000,000+domestically since its restoration (according to Box Office Mojo) and the DVD and Blu-ray re-release last year did amazingly well. The Buster Keaton “Ultimate Series” of DVD and Blu-ray re-releases sell great too (Next up is is an “Ultimate” Keaton set with all of his classic silent shorts). There’s Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Birth of a Nation, Phantom of the Opera… all of these films do strong business with DVD sales, mostly at premium pricing. Plus this isn’t the only new “silent” film. “Louis” has been screening and stars Jackie Earl Haley and Anthony Mackie. Will audiences flock to see these new films? Maybe, if they are good. Then again, Harvey could colorize it and add dubbed dialogue if it doesn’t work.
They shot a lot of this at the Ebell, here in LA.
-G.
PS: i think a bunch of the Dicaprio/Eastwood/Hoover pic was also shot around/in the Ebell a few weeks later.
YAY Michele! Score one for the Frenchies! The guy is bursting with creativity and humor– and of course he doesn’t live here in LA where both things are bludgeoned out of you.
Isnt this the plot of Wellman’s “A Star is Born”?
It’s the plot of “Singin’ in the Rain”, in any case!
great buzz around cannes for The Artist,
