Focus Features acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Lorene Scafaria-directed Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which is Steve Carell’s first project since leaving The Office. He stars with Keira Knightley and shooting begins this month in L.A. The premise: the world is ending, and a man heads cross country to reunite with his school age girlfriend for their final days. A friend (Knightley) accompanies him on the road trip and complicates things. Scafaria wrote the script and Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Joy Gorman produce with Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales and Mark Roybal. The film’s co-financed by Indian Paintbrush and Mandate Pictures, with Mandate’s Nathan Kahane and Nicole Brown exec producing. Lionsgate is handling international sales on the pic.

Great script and a great role for Carell… hope it turns out well.
Crap. This movie is going to ruin a good Chris Cornell song for me.
the only problem with that statement is that there’s no such thing.
Let me guess, the guy reunites with his school-age girlfriend only to see that she looks like Roseanne Arnold, then realizes that the love he has been searching for has been under his nose the entire time, so he hooks up with his travel companion instead. Whoa, I didn’t see that coming! Then the dreaded asteroid misses Earth by a few hundred thousand miles and the world doesn’t end after all. The school-friend, furious over the rejection and the money wasted on diets and fat cures, shoots them both. FADE OUT.
Actually, none of that happens. Which wouldn’t matter if your post was actually funny. But it’s not.
Hank you got every guess absolutely wrong except for the one about him hooking up with his travel companion but since they’ve already said those are the two lead roles of the film and they cast Keira Knightly as the companion that one’s a little more than obvious.
So it’s still funny how you could be so sure of yourself and so completely wrong at the same time.
read the screenplay first before making yourself look like an idiot
Like that’s easy to legally find.
Seeking a Friend is one of the best scripts I’ve read in a very very long time. It’s clever, witty and original, so everything that Hollywood desperately needs. I’m really looking forward at how they’ll bring this script to the screen. If they do a good job, this movie could be a winner. So Hank, please stop talking about things you don’t know s hit about, it annoys the cr ap out of me.
Hank- I like the way you think! Call me, i’m a huge bi-curious producer of such hit films as mall cop and click.

This is one of the best scripts I’ve read in years. Had to read it twice to be sure it was as well written, well conceived as I first believed. Tone is pitch perfect. Tragic, sad, funny, but totally original. A lot changes during shooting so we’ll see but the script is damn near perfect.
Yes it’s totally believable because a great beauty like Kiera Knightly (the “face of” Chanel no less) would easily fall for someone like Steve Carell. I mean it’s the “sense of humor” that REALLY turns women on, not superficial things like looks, height, age appropriateness, swagger and good ol’ hunkiness.
Nerdfest.
Sheesh, he’s 48, she’s 26 . Only in Hollywood.
Wrong the movie does end with the destruction of the world
OK, a good idea, and it looks great for Carrell. Yeah, Knightley and Carrell will hate each other, until they realize they’re in love – more than a stretch. But it’s fresher turn on it than the vast majority of what I’ve seen and read lately.
I know, I know – the studio, Knightley and Carrell have all been waiting hear what I think – NOW the production can begin.
It is so refreshing to see Keira Knightley in an American movie. I hope she does more of them from now on.
So for all you people who claim to have read the script, what part do you think William Petersen is going to play?
