The project that has the Cannes buying crowd most hot and bothered at the moment is the John Hillcoat-directed The Wettest County in the World. Hillcoat, who directed The Road, here covers a band of Depression Era bootleggers in the South, with Shia La Beouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Mia Wasikowska starring. I’m told that Relativity Media has posted the high bid so far, just shy of $6 million. This might drag out, with The Weinstein Company, CBS Films, FilmDistrict hot and bothered, with Fox Searchlight and Focus also in the mix. Buyers read a script and watched a sizzle reel. It has been an interesting festival, with the appetite of the old days restored, with bidders having to test the new resolve to not overpay and to be disciplined. Pic’s being sold by CAA with Cassian Elwes involved on behalf of Michael Benaroya, who funded the pic with Megan Ellison.

Any film with Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy has my attention.
I can’t wait for this movie to be misspelled somewhere prominent. I hope they run out of “O”s for the marquee.
The Wettest County script was way boring, and its a period piece from the director of snooze fest The Road. No thanks.
You sir are fuckin trippin !
I work in film and worked on this film. It is easily the best script I have read in ten years in the business. The cast is amazing andrhe performances were great. I watched them. The DP made the film look beautiful in every frAme. What was captured on the monitors looked great. Again, I was there and watched it. Also, as for the director. You may have not enjoyed the road, but the proposition is a masterpiece. Not to mention Guy Pierce and Gary Oldman’s perfoances are iconic.
I, too, got to see some of this as it was being recorded. Some years ago I read a Nick Cave interview in a music column and there was mention of his screenplay The Proposition. It was not screened here in North Georgia at the time, but when I got a copy, I was amazed. Australians know Westerns, too. And, having read The Road before seeing the film, the film presentation of that difficult, yet deep, subject matter, is exceptional. Astounding visuals and acting. A tough subject–how can you make such material rah-rah entertaining? Quite the film.
John Hillcoat, and the same cinematographer, production designer, art director, costume designer, and many others from the team that did The Proposition, and many from The Road, came to Georgia. With locations just south of metro Atlanta, they went to work. The cast is outstanding; all were very devoted to their parts. The work by construction teams, artists, costumes, locations, lighting–all the folks who sweat over the sets and work with the artists have recorded an exceptional film. Just you wait: Exceptional!
I feel lucky to have seen some of this as it happened, and I got to meet some fine people. Awesome films can still be made, without everything being CGI and special effects, and with budgets that rival third world economies. Talent is still in the movie business!
it’s true about The Road – a tremendous book, totally hoorible movie. However, same can be said of Cold Mountain – loved Wettest County. BTW, The Help was (for me) better on film. Go figure
