EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has acquired the spec From Mia With Love, a John Hughes-style comedy written by Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg, Bryan Shukoff and Kevin Chesley. Katzenberg will direct, and he and Grahame-Smith will produce under their Katsmith Productions banner. Grahame-Smith adapted his novel Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, which is being directed for the studio by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Tim Burton.
The coming-of-age comedy is a mix of Risky Business and Weird Science. Some plot elements could change, but the pitched premise had three guys so desperate to lose their virginity that they order up a Russian mail-order bride, figuring they can send her back. She is smoking hot but arrives with baggage and no plans to bed the lads, though she helps the trio become more suitable mating material.
Katzenberg’s directing experience includes episodes of The Hard Times Of R.J. Berger, the MTV show the duo exec produce. Deal comes as Grahame-Smith, who also authored Pride And Prejudice And Zombies and scripted Dark Shadows, works on his next novel. The concept is under wraps, but it is his first book under a three-book deal with Grand Central, and he will write the movie script simultaneously. The four scribes are repped by WME; Shukoff and Chesley are additionally repped by Madhouse Entertainment.

What’s his next “opus,” George Washington in Middle Earth– with aliens?
What cynical, Frankenstein gimmicks these projects are. Shame on the executives who reward such dreck with cash, instead of laughing them out of the room.
Woe is the film industry, if this is a harbinger of the “creativity” the public can expect. I hope the guy banks all he can, before his one silly little trick gets tired.
Not some frustrated “hater” here. Just a guy who likes the movies of all kinds, and is sad to see such patently dumb stuff is what the magic factories like these days. But to each his own.
“Just a guy who likes the movies of all kinds…”
What you REALLY meant was that you like movies of “some” kinds.
A.L.-V.H. was actually a pretty decent script. Obviously there’s no guarantee the movie will be, but it had a good start.
And in defense of “dumb stuff” — we are ALL responsible in some way, shape or form of this MTV/xBox generation that never ventures outdoors and likely couldn’t even spell the word.
WELCOME TO THE DECLINE! Just smile and enjoy the ride…
So how many writers does it take to craft this masterpiece exactly?
Another teen movie about straight white male teens trying to lose their virgninity. How original.
Depressing.
While it may not be an original idea, at least he’s got the resume to pull it off. The writing on RJ Berger, while way more crass than I remember from MTV, is actually pretty damn funny IMO.
Hard Times is a great show!
And very successful.
Obviously, this team can deliver the hits!
Is Grahame-Smith’s next novel yet another attempt to recapture Pride And Prejudice And Zombies‘s lightning in a bottle?
These guys are talented and funny. RJ Berger is really good. To think David was just an assistant on Pearl Harbor not to long ago he is rising fast.
And Jay what teenage boy isn’t try to get laid? That will never go out of style
Cynics. Have u seen RJ Berger? I have no doubt this will be hilariously brilliant.
He wrote two books and both are becoming movies. Doesn’t sound like lightning in a bottle to me.
And as for RJ Berger, I am ashamed to admit it, but I love the show in all of its raunchy glory. And I’m a chick. Hope MIA is more of the same.
David Katzenberg is following in the footsteps of his famous dad,Jeff Katzenberg, and is starting to make a name for himself in the entertainment business.
Good for him!
He is a nice guy and a hard worker.
Yeah, what a stunning shocker that David KATZENBERG could go from being “just an assistant” to a bankable writer-director in such a short time. What a testament that is to pure talent, stick-to-it-iveness and plain ole’ gumption. Wonder if he called the folks back home in the holler to share his good news?
