UPDATED: Fringe got lucky to score an early renewal because no other bubble show got a reprieve at Fox. The network tonight axed all others: the Tim Roth-starring procedural Lie To Me, sophomore drama Human Target and freshmen The Chicago Code, Traffic Light and Breaking In. That is in contrast with last May, when it renewed all three of its bubble dramas, Lie To Me, Human Target and Fringe. While Human Target and Lie To Me had been long shots after soft second- and third-season runs and Chicago Code and Traffic Light‘s fate had been sealed for a while, especially with Chicago Code creator Shawn Ryan moving from 20th TV to Sony, the yanking of Breaking In was very surprising as the comedy launched strong behind American Idol, posting Fox’s highest ratings for live-action comedy series in three years. It has since slipped but was considered a solid contender for renewal as it had shown promise and had done much better than two other freshman live-action Fox comedies, Traffic Light and Running Wilde. Breaking In beat the odds once, when Fox passed on the pilot last season, before getting resurrected with a midseason order. But its luck ran out. And so the Christian Slater curse continues …

Bummer!!!
It was not the best of shows in its element, but the characters and promising story seemed to be worth developing.
Guess not…
I can’t believe Fox is canceling “Human Target”. It’s one of the best shows on Fox. I’m definitely losing faith in Fox.
i thank that for them to cancel human target that me the best show is not going to be on so i will not watch any shows on fox at all i to have definitely lost faith in fox
I really like Human Target. Seems like most every show I really like they take off the air. Human Target, Ghost Whisper, 24 only to name a few. I wish the networks would ask the viewers to vote on shows instead of using the stupid Neilson ratings. I never have been one of the raters nor has anyone I’ve ever met. Just who are the people who decide what stays on and what goes, anyway???
I will really miss Human Target and Lie To Me. They were some of the only reasons I watched Fox whats next you will cut the BONES the best show on tv! Your killing me FOX. seriously too much reality not enough great acting!
Couldn’t agree more with everyone here. Human Target, Lie to Me and Chicago Code all had grit, depth and tongue in cheek humour, all wonderful ingredients for long lasting productions. Or, so one would have thought. What, does Fox only want to handle ‘light weight’ flippant, chick flick type of ‘dumbed down’ comedies that will surely be lame and totally unfunny? Yes, well that would certainly suit the cretins and is probably the thing that pays. But, you have to cater for some of the more ‘high-brow’ viewers who like to escape with a bit more than a soggy pie in the face, surely. Or, because there’s so few of us around these days, we don’t count?!
The lead and supporting actors in all of these productions gave grand, solid performances. Mark Valley is a treat. His obvious charms and delightful twinkle in his eye takes you back to the leading men of old, with strength, charisma and desirability. Jackie Earle Haley as Guerrero and Chi McBride as Winston were simply marvellous as well. They all worked brilliantly together. Wonderful ensemble.
And, now we come to the really good one. Tim Roth in Lie to Me – now that’s a crime right there. I am certain he could take any number of Fox execs into his little ‘operations’ room and work out who was telling the biggest porkies here!
Ratings, ha. Just like when Mark Valley’s and Sienna Miller’s wonderful little treasure ‘Keen Eddie’ was shelved, just before everyone got a chance to see it and LOVE IT. Fast TV like fast food, you got to eat it while it’s hot!
I think Fox is very wrong to cancel Human Target. It was my favorite show and others told me the same. Please, try to get them to have another Season. They are such great actors and I like adventure.
I never cared for these show’s anyway ! Why not think about picking up the show Ghost Whisper ! I can’t even begin to say how many people where not only upset but pissed off when CBS cancelled it !!
I LOVE Chicago Code—what a bummer! Hope they find a new role for the Chief soon!!!
I am wondering if Chicago Code was a little to close to reality in Chicago? This show got better each week.
Chicago Code is a great show and needs to be brought …come on America wake up and raise some hell with fox
I really cannot believe how the networks cancel these great shows! I can not believe the Chicago Code does not have a big following, the show just got better and better. The show, Breakin In, my wife and I just thought was so funny. Who are these people that are the Neilsen Raters anyway? All the great shows get canned. What is FOX doing?? How do you complain to FOX anyway? I will gladly yell in their ear!
Our family really loved to watch Chicago Code. The characters were really great and believable. What a shame. This was one cop show we enjoyed. CAN’T BELIEVE IT FOX. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING…
Chicago Code is the best police drama ever. the only show that I can actually enjoy on the Fox network! Fox blows hopefully someone else picks this show up!
Three of my favorite shows; Lie to me, Human Target and Chicago Code. Time for me to move to another network.
Time to axe Fox!
Seriously….just can the entire Fox network and start over.Every show that comes along that doesn’t involve mind-bending loads of crap or brainless cartoons without a friggin plot, get the axe. Give the engaging, action-packed shows like “Human Target” and “The Chicago Code” just enough time to build a strong fan-base(shown clearly by the angry tone to these posts,)then pull the plug. Its like offering someone a cookie ,and then bashing their outstretched hand with a hammer!
AMEN!
Not strictly speaking Fox’s fault. They cater to the mindless dysfunctional masses who want to watch reality trash shows. Why? Because watching other idiots on the tube makes them feel better about themselves. That is the only way I can explain why reality tv is so popular.
Then there is glee, a thinly disguised gay serial centered around a bunch of dysfunctional sex-confused characters. After much hype, I started watching the first episode. After about 10 minutes, discovered what it really was, and changed the channel. Never been back for more. Doubt it has any redeeming value whatsoever.
Lie to me was, perhaps, one of the best ever crime dramas on tv – it was a credible, out of the box story line with great acting and writing. Geeesh, it just won several awards, so what does fox do? Go figure.
The only show left on Fox that I will watch is Fringe. Wonder how long before Fox decides that Fringe is too complex for their simple audience?
Lets be honest here, if it’s not a CARTOON or REALITY Show, Fox has no interest. the ONLY time I watch Fox anymore is for Fringe and Breaking in, and now they took away Breaking In, an off teh wall comedy with some actual intelligence! need I say more! Don’t worry, Frine will go next, unless they decide to make a cartoon out of it…Oh wait, they already tried that…..
How lame. Lie To Me was awesome. Tim Roth’s character WAS awesome. No other actor like him or that could portray his character. Very different show. No other like it. BAD DECISION FOX. Hope 2 and Half Men works out.
hey fox i have lost all faith in you i hope someone the the station reads this i will not wacth another show that you air. how could you guys get rid of lie to me and human target. they were the best show’s you guys had. well i hope that another station picks them back up you guys are really sad.
not surprising at all
Bummer, I’ve watched this on Hulu and thought it was funny.
Man, Christian Slater can’t catch a break.
what???? i was really getting into Breaking In, and the cast is awesome
this makes no sense
Agreed, Breakin_In was a big hit in my book. I got a kick out of every episode. Christian Slater and the rest of the cast are brilliant. Good laughs for a half hour on a Tuesday.
Doesn’t surprise me. Fox doesn’t have a lot of room on their schedule, and Breaking in recently was just scoring a 2.4 with one of the biggest lead-in’s on television. It would have flopped hard if they aired it after Raising Hope just like Traffic Light.
I can’t believe they have cancelled Human Target. I check every night to see if it is back yet. It was something different and I love the different characters.
Odette Annable happy birthday, your show is canceled…haha
No, Human Target! That was a great Show….. Damn you! Glee… I’m blaming you for this….
I agree. The second season of Human Target really pulled the show together, especially with the addition of two new characters. But this is traditionally how FOX treats its scripted programming.
Because you think reality TV shows aren’t scripted! They are more scripted than actual TV drama and comedy programming. I’ve known people who have worked on reality TV shows.
Sadly, the thing is that TV companies here (up north) don’t have the budget to pay and maintain series such as Human Target, Lie To Me and Breaking In, even if they have quite a viewership in this country. Luckily cbs and abc aren’t doing the same errors as Fox… and seriously, who really watches Bob’s burger?
Why you do that and we all love Human Target! the best one….
I loved Human target. I thought finally Fox had a decent replacement for 24; so, of course they are going to cancel it. I also liked Lie to Me. It wasn’t as good as Human Target, but it was at least different and NOT REALITY TV!!!! Yuck!
I’m with you on this, this guys are so screwed up…. action packed show and has to be canceled,
yeap they have to cancel Glee instead
Human Target was the best. A lot of action, a bit of spoof and some spark! What a shame that Fox or another network won’t stick up for a great show. Glee is nothing compared to Human Target. BOOOOO Fox
Totally agree Human Target was great why do they always kill the good shows and leave us with terrible reality shows!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in TOTAL agreement with you!!
Loved Human Target…done with Fox
Shame on you Fox! Human Target was one of the best shows on TV! Fun and creative storylines with a good dose of humor and very interesting characters. I’m devastated that this show has been canceled.
I agree, Human Target was excellent. There are so few good shows on these days… not very smart on your part, Fox.
Of COURSE they cancelled those two. They were two of the very few shows I actually watched regularly and enjoyed.
Any chance another network will step up???
Wah wah
Pissed off – I loved Breaking In!
Damn. Breaking In is a great comedy. Sad to see it go. Hope they air the rest of the episodes. It was doing good with viewership too. I don’t see why they cancelled it.
This is Firefly all over again. Fox doesn’t have a fucking clue when it comes to what shows actually have the fan base that would keep them going for years. Hell, if they The Office instead of NBC I bet they would have cancelled it after the second season, that’s how idiotic their people are.
Please. Try to show some knowledge about television ratings.
Nah fuck you tyler. the other guy is right.
Breaking In sucks and this is not the 80′s when a show like Cheers which was in last had the benefit of time to catch on and become the #1 show. Immediate results or your cancelled.
Tyler works for Fox.
At least Fox gives us the shows that we care about so deeply, even if they (in our opinion) prematurely cancel them.
Bottom line: the ratings were too low to justify picking them back up. If the ratings are there, maybe we’ll see them shift to cable (like Southland), but I doubt it.
Actually, Kevin Reilly is the executive who backed The Office at NBC and gave it a chance to grow, and he is also the executive at Fox who just canceled Breaking In. So while I get your point about giving shows a chance to find an audience, and it’s a shame about Breaking In, your actual example was flawed.
I love love LOVE comments from people who actually know something. It’s so refreshing here on Deadline.
A shame about Human Target. The show really improved in it’s second season.
Seriously. That was my favorite of the bunch.
Bummer, I liked Human Target. Not a masterpiece and nothing like the DC original, but I thought HT offered some agreeably mind-numbing action comfort food. Took me back to the A-Team days. Hope Nikita survives; that show and HT has (had) some of the best fight/stunt work on TV.
According to Sepinwall, who spoke to Shawn Ryan, CHICAGO CODE has also been canceled tonight.
As always, the problem with FOX is that they don’t schedule the 10 o’clock hour, so live action comedies suffer. If you are a comedy writer, why would you take your comedy to FOX? Work with 20th TV sure, but don’t go to the FOX network until they actually make a strong commitment to comedy. They don’t value it at all and please don’t anyone say Raising Hope. If it wasn’t behind Glee it’s numbers would be Traffic Light bad.
Wrong. Raising Hope had strong ratings even without a new glee behind it.
Well this sucks. I loved “Breaking In” and Cash’s epic sayings like “Boom! goes the dynamite!” Bummer I had to find out through Bret Harrison on twitter.
Wow. I never saw “Breaking In” and don’t figure I missed much… but it’s really depressing that you quote them as having epic sayings like, “Boom! Goes the dynamite!”
Boom! Goes the dynamite! — is a rip-off of a bad sportscaster from Indiana that was a viral youtube hit like 5 years ago.
Yeah, don’t buy into everyone on here saying it was a great show… I think it had a great premise but was marred by some pretty tepid writing. It even made Trevor Moore seem unfunny, and he’s hilarious on Whitest Kids U’Know.
Yes, you are exactly right. The shows were just badly written from a comedy standpoint. The plots were ok, and the characters were great, but they weren’t utilized very well. Christian Slater’s character was written ok in a comedy standpoint.. but the rest were fail (except for the 1st episode). I just wish they could have kept everything the same and just changed writers.
I was really hoping Human Target would get a third season. Fun show.
The Chicago Code was just axed too. Odds are better for Lie to Me, but it’s hard to be sure yet. By the time I finish typing this, they could’ve gotten the bad news. It’s hard to imagine Fox would send it to reruns over the summer if they weren’t going to renew. The 2 People’s Choice Awards over more successful shows speak to the rabid nature of the fanbase, and the show’s been pretty useful even if it hasn’t taken off yet. They might see how the pilots do, then bring it back mid-season. In the event that one of them implodes early, Lie to Me could fill in like it did with Lone Star. Why cut Tim Roth loose if you don’t have to?
That sucks about breaking in — bret harrison is great! Ugh. I’m shocked about the chicago code, that did well in a very difficult time slot. Oh well.
But they keep the God-Awful Fringe. Fox, I hate you!
You obviously haven’t seen Fringe since season 1. The 3rd season of Fringe was great.
Has anybody seen Fringe since season 1? I think that’s the problem.
Effing Fringe. What a joke. Chicago Code, Lie to Me, and Human Target all get cancelled and they keep crappy Fringe??????????????? WTF?
Fringe is one of the smartest, most well-written shows on TV – you clearly don’t have the mental capacity to be able to watch. This last season was PHENOMENAL and the finale last week had me gasping and wanting more immediately. Definitely deserved a renewel and a pairing with Alcatraz sounds PERFECT to me!!
I love how Fringe fans always question the intelligence (or “mental capacity”) of people who hate the show. News flash: The show is awful. Bad writing, incredibly cheesy, dumb execution. And bottom line, NO ONE is watching except the few self-satisfied viewers like “John” who have time to burn on Friday nights. Fox should’ve kept Human Target or Chicago Code instead.
Bullshit. Plenty of people are watching Fringe through DVR and internet streaming. Or are you going to defend the Nielsen system that just got your favorite show canceled? Yeah, didn’t think so.
TOTALLY AGREE with Hilarious!!!
I don’t feel the need to name call anyone here, but I should point out that FRINGE is one of the smarter, more entertaining shows out there, despite (or because?) it cannibalizes from other JJ Abrams shows… The First People/Rambaldi sketches? Time travel?
Still. Fuckin’ sweet.
Fringe will get dumped early next season…
Don’t hold your breath on any of those mysteries getting tied up.
They already ordered a full season, unless there is a massive drop in audience from the built-in already, don’t count on it.
Fringe is an excellent show with excellent acting. Take a look at John Noble’s resume sometime, you might be impressed. Don’t blame FOX for the fact that you’re too dumb to follow along.
I still don’t understand the nature of developing shows and getting some fanbase and then cancelling them so that you can run other nonsense in their place and then continue to spend more dollars developing other non-productive programs. It doesn’t make much sense to me. What is the point in cancelling them to replace them with crap?
This is a weird thing about the TV business. They have no short term accountability on their choices of programs. It is like they pick the schedule via dart board and then the show lives and dies in the coliseum and then on to the next batch. It is almost like highly paid tv executives had nothing to do with the actual decisions to air one show over another.
I agree with cancelling shows so quickly that the fan base doesn’t have time to “mature.” We enjoy Chicago Code. The characters are just starting to build and Fox cuts them off!? Not cool at all. Let the show grow!
We don’t watch Glee. Watched Fame many years ago. Over it.
Will turn on the TV for Chicago Code but not for the others. Chicago has lots of history of government corruption. Nice to see even a TV show that is trying to overcome.
How do they cancel breaking in? HOW? That was the one show working AND the ratings were solid!!! What the hell are they thinking!!!!
LOVED “Lie To Me”…I don’t understand why they are canceling. JUST PLAIN DON”T GET IT.
I LOVED “Lie To Me”, too! Hopefully they might decide to bring it back as a mid-season replacement or something (I’m not holding my breath though). FOX should have cancelled that wannabe smart Sci-Fi, “Fringe”, instead.
this may now be the bret harrison curse… that guy ends up in all the failed series.. The Loop, Reaper, V, Breaking In….
Hey… I am still holding out hope for V being renewed, Maybe he can be back in a bigger role on V if it’s picked up.
Worked out okay for George Clooney.
