UPDATE 9 PM: A Locke & Key limited series/miniseries was a stretch, and it seems that it is not happening. The show is now heading to the death pile. And yes, comedy Outnumbered is dead too. Surprisingly, multi-family comedy Little In Common starring Rob Corddry and Kevin Hart, which had stayed largely under the radar, is still very much in the mix.
UPDATE 8 PM: With two high-profile drama pilots, the Ethan Hawke starrer Exit Strategy and Locke & Key, conspicuously missing from the list of series pickups or rejects, speculation started swirling as to their fate. I hear both are still in play. Word is Exit Strategy may be held for retooling. I hear Fox brass felt the pilot had a lot of action and not too much character in it, so they had been looking to shift the focus on the show. As for Locke & Key, there is a rumor that Fox wants to make it into a big-event limited series/miniseries, but it is unclear if that would be financially feasible. Comedy Family Album is still TBD but is not getting an order at this time and may get pushed.
UPDATE 7:30 PM: Fox has picked up a second new comedy series, I Hate My Teenage Daughter, on the same night its star, Jaime Pressly, appears on Fox’s Raising Hope. Meanwhile, three other pilots, medical drama Weekends at Bellevue and comedies Council of Dads and Iceland, are dead.
UPDATE 6:55 PM: Fox just made its first drama series orders, picking up Bones spinoff Finder and time travel-flavored Alcatraz. The pickup of Alcatraz came after a very good meeting between the pilot’s producers and Fox yesterday. Finder, a planted Bones spinoff based on the The Locator books series from Richard Greener, stars Geoff Stults as a military-trained “finder,” a former military policeman who specializes in finding people and things that no one else can. Michael Clarke Duncan co-stars in the project, from Bones creator Hart Hanson and 20th TV. Alcatraz, from Warner Bros and Bad Robot, is a crime drama set at the country’s most infamous prison on Alcatraz Island and involves a team investigating the mysterious disappearance of its 1960s inhabitants in the present. Sarah Jones, Jorge Garcia, Jonny Coyne, Jason Butler, Sam Neill, Parminder Nagra, Santiago Cabrera and Robert Forster co-starred in the pilot, written by Liz Sarnoff, Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt and directed by Danny Cannon.
PREVIOUS 6 PM: Fox just opened this year’s series-order season with a pickup of early frontrunner The New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel, who will join her sister, Bones star Emily Deschanel, on the Fox schedule. Word is that there may be more Fox pickups coming tonight. There had been speculation that the network may order its strongest comedy pilots, New Girl and possibly Family Album and/or I Hate My Teen
age Daughter, early this week. Picking the shoo-in pilots to series early allows their producers to get the best available writers. Created by Liz Meriwether, The New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel as an unlucky-in-love elementary school teacher who moves away from her former boyfriend and in with three unruly guys. Jake Kasdan directed the single-camera pilot for 20th Century Fox TV and Chernin Entertainment. Meriwether, Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope, David Finkel and Brett Baer are executive producing. Jake M. Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone and Damon Wayans Jr. co-star. Wayans is in second position to ABC’s Happy Endings, which will make for a down-to-the-wire intrigue as the midseason ABC comedy is in contention for renewal. One thing is certain: Damon Wayans’ son will have a series on the air next season, something that cannot be said (yet) for his dad, whose pilot at CBS has been getting so-so buzz.

Cant believe they picked up teenage daughter….. That pilot script was rancid with a capital C for crap
I’m so happy for Jaime Pressly! Who knew she has this comedic gift which she showed in My Name is Earl. Here’s hoping that Teenage Daughter becomes a huge hit
Now, why is Weekend at Bellevue dead? It had such a strong buzz…
i said this over the weekend. my inside info told me that if HOUSE came back WEEKENDS AT BELLEVUE is dead. FOX didn’t want 2 medical shows dealing with similar cases.
Since WEEKENDS AT BELLEVUE is owned by UNIVERSAL, is there a chance that Bob Greenblatt might pick it up for NBC since NBC doesn’t have any hospital pilots in development?
Not really! NBC was the one to drop the pilot first, and then FOX picked it up.
Let’s see how this turns how. We’ve pointed out on other articles how Fox already has 8.5 hours of programming for the fall, and now they’ve added 2 more hours, and there are still some shows to be determined.
All you haters of JJ and Alcatraz can suck it!
What? No Exit Strategy or Weekends at Bellevue? Guess we won’t be reading one of those annoying TOLDJA! articles then. So psyched for Alcatraz and Liz, Steven and Bryan. They’re gonna make it great!
Any word on the other comedies “Little in Common” and “Outnumbered”?
Sooooo souped about Alcatraz, can’t wait – JJ is pure brillance… and the The New Girl sounds pretty funny as well, definitely will give that a chance.
What about Touch? I thought that was a “lock”… Any word?
On the down side, I thought Breaking In was pretty funny – it made me laugh out loud at time. I’m surprised they didn’t give that more of a chance. I also really liked The Chicago Code, too bad the rating sucked so bad. It was a really good show and was just picking up the pace with the storylines.. Oh well..
TOUCH is for midseason, apparently.
Touch hasn’t even filmed a pilot yet. It’ll most likely be midseason
New Girl is fantastic. I Hate My Teenage Daughter is aggressively awful.
Interesting with New Girl’s Wayans being in second position. If McPherson was still running ABC this would’ve guaranteed a pick-up for Happy Endings.
Could not agree more, Teenage Daughter is one of the worst pilots I’ve read this year (picked up to pilot, passed on, spec……) Not an original laugh or real moment to be found.
Bad Fox!
what about touch with kiefer sutherland
Screw you FOX, you had a great chance with Locke And Key and your throwing it away. Its no wonder I dont watch anything on your channel. Hopefully it’ll be picked up by AMC or another channel.
Only if they recast. To hang that show on the shoulders of kids without super strong drama backgrounds was a big miss! What were they thinking. Sometimes out of the box gets you a big PASS!
Hey Foxlovers! These decisions are great, but they don’t matter thanks to amazing Simon and Paula show Xfactor. It is all about who goes after or near that show. So fight you comedians and dramatists for crumbs off the table for sure Fox will go crazy marketing their number one new asset.
We don’t see much American shows in Primetime in France, but they end up on paytv and so.
However you are really lucky to get the X factor, it is better than idol and has Simon, who is still relevant no? I love his modern new look with the eyes and new faces.
I’ve got that sinking feeling about fall TV. The execs are passing over the interesting pilots and choosing the poop. Weekends at Bellevue scrapped, The Finder picked up, Exit Strategy retooled and a Rob Corddry vehicle from out of nowhere? Bleh. Another “safe” fall lineup for our enjoyment.
Rob Corddry vehicle from out of nowhere? Out of nowhere because the boards didnt talk about it? Word has it that it happened to screen through the roof at Fox – and just because it flew under the radar and didnt give people the chance to overanalyze it. Why is that a negative? Also it comes from Rob Thomas who did Party Down – so why is that “safe” Dont think of party down as a “safe” show.
I can’t believe they took The Finder (which will be lucky to last one season) and passed on Locke & Key, a tremendous story. I recommend people check out the comic it’s based on, it’s a phenomenal read.
Too bad comic book didn`t translate into a good pilot. It was boring. Great production values but slow plot and boring actors.
THAT IS GREAT NEWS ABOUT ‘ALCATRAZ” – COME ON “LITTLE IN COMMON”!!!!!!!!!!!
THAT IS THE BEST NEWS ABOUT ‘ALCATRAZ” – COME ON “LITTLE IN COMMON”!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeehaw! “Little in Common” is still alive! Love both those guys and Rob Thomas.
The last father/son timeslot showdown?
Sheen (The West Wing) vs. Sheen (Spin City)
I hear the Locke & Key pilot was fantastic and looked great, but ultimately it was too dark and disturbing and tense. Which seems weird since it is a horror show. Hope it ends up somewhere. I want to see it.
Any word on Tagged?
Happy endings should.
