20th Century Fox TV and film divisions have partnered to produce GLEE LIVE! 3D!, a feature film based on the upcoming Glee Live! In Concert! North American tour. The studio plans to release the film for a two-week engagement starting Aug. 12. Gleeks who were unable to get tickets will be able to catch the concert in 3D. The tour starred 14 members of the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning TV show, and the film will also feature behind-the-scenes moments. The feature will be directed by Fame helmer Kevin Tancharoen.
Given the rabid following that Ryan Murphy’s show has, this seems like as good as a cash machine for the studio. It worked for Sony on the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It! (whose limited run was extended, something that always seems to happen), and Paramount cleaned up with the Justin Bieber documentary Never Say Never.
The film features performances by series regulars Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Mark Salling, Dianna Agron, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Harry Shum Jr, Chord Overstreet, Darren Criss and Ashley Fink. The concert tour finishes June 18 in Uniondale, N.Y., before moving on to the UK.

Fox, stop. You’re beating the horse to death.
FOX strikes again! They make Universal look good!
HORRIBLE idea. While I used to really like the show, it’s had a very spotty second season. If the 90 minute special episode was any indication of the quality of a GLEE feature, we’re in trouble.
It’s just a live concert film. Save your disappointment for GLEE: THE MOTION PICTURE – THE SECRET TREASURE OF THE LOST CITY OF ATLANTIS a few yers after the series ends.
I am very happy for Fox to keep milking their cash cow until it runs dry. The quicker it dries out, the quicker it disappears!
Excellent post! It can’t disappear fast enough. What started out as a nice teen dramedy has turned into a parody of itself. The first season bears little resemblance to the shite that is the show today.
Yup, the first season was a nice, fresh, fun little show that you could enjoy now and then. Now it is an embarrassing mess. But then, if you’re familiar with Nip/Tuck’s collapse, then I guess it would be no surprise.
Plotline: The “faux documentary” cameraman turns out to be closeted and bullied. The cast members, through their unconditional acceptance, allow him to “be himself.” Cameraman “comes out” to the world and sings “Lady Madonna” with female cast. Played by Sean Hayes.
I think it’s a great idea for “Glee” fans who haven’t been able to get tickets to the summer concerts. There’s no story involved; it’s just the music and live performances. There’s a huge market for this. If I can’t get to the concert in my area, I’d love to go see it on the big screen.
Well, this is the closest I will ever get to seeing them live, so I’ll take it. I hope they record a good performance, with none of the rumored lipsyncing. I’m looking forward to the dvd.
This is going to be a lot of fun. Haters be damned.
Even Ryan Murphy has abandoned this series. It’s unwatchable now.
I say, GO ON WITH IT! I’d love to see more Glee stuff
(Considering that I’m not going to the Glee tour.)
I watch Glee and there’s no way I’d see this film. 3D?! Why?! It’s absolutely pointless and a waste of capital. Not to mention, this is a death wish if they do this before the series ends.
Why!! Glee is absolutely the Worst show. Go to Hell Glee!
I won’t be seeing the actual concert live so I will definitely go see this. Should be fun.
This sounds like a good idea EXCEPT for the IN 3D part. lol Why everything gotta be in 3D. Damn, we like our concerts just fine without it.
Go away pointless celebrities!
Probably the worst thing I’ve heard ALL year! Yuck.
P.S. And I’m actually a fan of Glee.
Glee makes me cringe. Free Jane Lynch from this gay crap. (I’m gay so calm down)
How is this a bad idea? Nobody is forcing you to go see it, so you can all suck it. All this is doing is giving those of us who can’t go to the concert a chance to see it.
So the wheelchair kid can walk in the movie?
I gave up on Glee about 6 episodes ago when I realized it’s basically the same episode over and over again.
However…this is a good idea…Glee is burning white hot right now and will quickly burn out completely so this revenue stream is finite and next season will start to see it cool down tremendously.
They’re wise to cash in now.
There’s a thing called over-exposure and those talentless kids are it. Hope the movie bombs and finally rids the world of this crap.
If it was just Darren Criss I’d consider it.
Glee!? Glee is one of the WORST shows I have ever seen! In fact is almost as bad as the brain dead show 2 & 1/2 Men. Glee is full of a bunch of pantie-waste weenie boys and self centered teenie boppers that can’t sing.
I would go if they had special guests like Charice, or Gwyneth. Otherwise, to see the same cast members again is a wait-till-it-comes-out-on-video moment.
All the appeal of this show has gone out the window. I REALLY liked season one when the show had plots. Season 2 has been nothing but gimmick episodes based on artists music and a pushing of the accepting gay people agenda (I have nothing against gay people – just been slapped in the face a thousand times by this show and its agenda). I think if they can find their way back to the quality of season 1, the show deserves to last many more seasons. I think if they continue down the path of season 2, the well will dry out sooner than later.
This movie idea… SO GLAD its NOT a scripted film. Simply a 3D concert show like the Justin Bieber one and the Black Eyed Peas and Michael Jackson. Don’t fault them for this… its just good way to market and capitalize on the already silly concert series idea that came from this show.
If they can produce it for around $5M it has a chance to make a healthy profit.
