CBS has passed on Hail Mary. An early frontrunner, the buddy PI pilot starring Minnie Driver eventually lost momentum at the network. But the project has been a favorite at producing studio Warner Bros TV, and I hear that it is now being shopped around to other networks. Produced by Joel Silver, Hail Mary centers on Mary Beth (Driver), a suburban single mom in Atlanta who teams with KZ (Brandon T. Jackson), a streetwise hustler, to solve crimes.

The script reads at a 4th grade reading level, it’s just not good kudos to CBS.
Oh damnit Will. You’re insulting 4th graders now.
It was seriously B-A-D…
If you told me this was going to be on the air and told me this was the pitch.
“Hail Mary centers on Mary Beth (Driver), a suburban single mom in Atlanta, who teams up with KZ (Brandon T. Jackson), a streetwise hustler, to solve crimes.”
Without knowing this was at CBS I would have bet money it was on TNT. They should start there.
If it goes anywhere that would be my guess. Female driven procedural, starring a b-lister with a recognizable name, has TNT written all over it.
Damn. This woulda been GREAT. Right after “Get Christie Love”, and “Baretta”. In 1978. So sorry Joel Silver didnt get a show picked up. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
shame. this is a good one. hope it finds a good home!
thank the good Lord. minnie driver is unwatchable.
The logline in the blurb doesn’t do it justice; the story is much richer than it reads. This was one of the strongest pilot scripts this season. It attracted the talents of Minnie Driver and Ilene Chaiken.
Not sure how to interpret that first comment. It reads like it was written by a 4th grader. Actually, a 4th grader couple probably put together a more coherent sentence.
Sounds like it could easily fit between Burn Notice and Royal Pains.
I’ve seen it – just ok and not very original – altho, first time on broadcast tv I’ve heard a character call another a “c u next Tuesday”. Minnie Driver is a good actress and likable but the premise is unbelievable. She deserves better. But then again, so do we!
CBS dodges the Silver bullet of pain and mediocrity.
On the other hand, it would be fun to see Joel Silver v. Ilene Chaiken (the showrunner). What an odd mix!
The script was pretty good, but I think it was the casting for this that makes HAIL MARY one of the better potential fall shows. While Minnie isn’t a huge name she’s a great actress and Brandon is really going to be a huge actor in a few years.
While this may not have been the best fit for CBS, if this doesn’t get on the air this fall on some network someone is making a big mistake.
The script read well. Great characters. It’ll be a hit elsewhere. A favorite Pilot of mine.
So basically it’s “Scarecrow and Mrs. King.”
Forget that, bring back The Riches, FX.
“Hail Mary centers on Mary Beth (Driver), a suburban single mom in Atlanta, who teams up with KZ (Brandon T. Jackson), a streetwise hustler, to solve crimes.”
Good God.
Probably didn’t get picked up because they forgot to add “jive-talkin’” to the “streetwise hustler” character description in the logline. Sheesh!
It’s such a good script that it didn’t get picked up right? Great logic. Ilene is great and so is Brad (director) but neither of them wrote it. They need to find better talent to pair up with. See ya later Minnie, you still have time to torment yet another crew:).
After loosing Terriers this was going to be my PI/Noir fix. I hope if it does get pick up on TNT that Tnt execs will allow it express lot more creativiy then it allow it’s other shows.
Damn. Had a non-speaking part in this as Ms Driver’s dead son. I was really hoping to see it. Ah well, fingers crossed for TNT or something.
Hey what’s the latest on Hail Mary Pilot??
