Several eagle-eyed viewers today alerted us to a muted line on last night’s episode of the midseason ABC comedy Happy Endings. Just like Monday’s Chuck, which included a reference to the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden a day after his surprising killing, Happy Endings too had a bin Laden-related joke that was rendered outdated by his death. The joke was left in, but producers tried to mitigate the timing problem by muting the audio on the punchline. In the scene, Dave (Zachary Knighton) and his ex Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) talk about trying to trap a mouse on the loose. “It’s been like, four days, I can’t believe you haven’t caught this mouse yet,” Alex said. Replied Dave, “I know, he’s like my bin Laden. Jessica bin Laden, this super hot Arab girl I went to college with,” followed by a pause. What was the original line that was supposed to go there? “The one that got away.”

The Canadian version had the whole line
I dont think this show is funny at all. I really hope the networks have better lineups for the fall.
AGREED! I was surprised they gave the showrunner a deal. Go figure.
What?! Happy Endings is the better comedy I’ve waatched this season so far! ABC should keep it because Happy Endings is so much better than Cougar Town. Better with You is funny, but I really prefer Happy Endings!
It’s so weird. If you pitched the concept to me now I still wouldn’t be into it but I laugh every time I watch it. I didn’t like the actress who plays Penny on SNL but I think she’s great on this show.
The rest of the cast down to the completely nondescript, generic white guy lead who I would probably otherwise detest are all really funny. They even took the trouble to write an actual character for Damon Wayans Jr. to play.
The writing is topical and self-aware without being obnoxious. The “gaycist” storyline was funny. I’m as surprised as anyone but I think it’s a quality show.
Really? I think this is one of the only funny shows on tv! Just curious, what kind of sitcom do you like?
Modern Family is FUNNY…and The Middle is FUNNY. Laugh the entire episode.
They make 15 versions of this generic show every pilot season. This one made on it the air.
The pilot was not very good. The series is absolutely hilarious.
Really? Never watched the show but just literally laughed out loud from reading what the joke was. Perhaps it’s a delivery problem?
Current events aside – man, that joke is LAME.
I don’t know what you guys are talking about, I love this show! Think it is very funny! ABC doing a good job as of late with their comedies.
It has been getting better and better and there is some funny there…a little hokey but definitely has promise.
They also deleted it from the closed captions.
No, they did not – at least not where I am. And i am in the DC area. And i would swear that I heard the joke also (fully), but maybe i just actually read it on the cc. b/c i remember thinking, Oh, ha! ironic joke now, now that he is captured.”
DRAMAAAA! I LOVE this show! ABC, bring this show back in the fall.
I wanna learn jazzkwondo now. This show is funny. It deserves a real shot. It just needs a better time slot
This is so insane, i think that people are smart enough to realize that they produce shows well in advance and that they can keep the joke in. It’s not like the person that is in the joke is much beloved and they are making fun of the person.
If ever a joke deserved to be muted. More of today’s sitcoms should use this technology.
I agree with the people saying it’s funny. It still has some more character development to do with the male characters, but it has potential.
Reminds me of Community in that the first handful of shows were shaky, but it got better and better as the characters came into their own.
I think Happy Endings is the best new comedy that came out this season. I’m surprised that other comedies, like Better With You, is still on the air. And is Traffic Light still airing? That was awful. Glad Mr. Sunshine is gone!
Hilarious show. Thought it would be like every other show like it that has been developed, but the writing and pace of the dialogue are top notch. ABC should bring this show back.
Agree with the comments Happy Endings doesn’t work and after the disaster ratings it’ll be gone. The actors are trying hard with bland material and it shows. Kinda wish they could use the Happy Endings cast with Traffic Light writing, cause that show had great writing and a awful cast.
Wrong, Tong. Check your facts. It’s looking probable for next season.
Casey Wilson and Damon Jr. are great, but the rest of the show is awful. Unwatchable.
Other People’s Kids?
As i stated above, I thought i heard the joke, but definitely read it on the closed caption. it caught my attention b/c of its timeliness, or lack thereof, depending on how you look at it.
