EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures has acquired screen rights to the book Heaven Is For Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip To Heaven And Back, written by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent. Joe Roth will produce with T.D. Jakes.
Burpo is a small town Nebraska pastor whose four-year old son, Colton, nearly died during an emergency appendectomy operation. As he recovered, Colton began telling his family that he went to Heaven, actually looking down at the doctors operating on him and his family praying in the waiting room. And he slowly began telling them details about his miscarried sister, and his long-dead grandfather, none of which he should have known about. He then revealed to his family what it was like during his visit in Heaven, before he was sent back to his family. He’s now 11.
Roth produced Alice in Wonderland and has the Sam Raimi-directed Oz: The Great and Powerful and Snow White and the Huntsman on the launch pad. While some might look at the contents of this book and think Roth has another fairy tale on his hands, Heaven Is For Real has caught on as affirming story with a faith-based crowd. Movie interest was high before the Burpo family entrusted the tale to producers and an exec with a track record of devotion to the Man Upstairs. Jakes is himself a Texas-based pastor, who produced and played a pastor in Jumping the Broom, which Sony Pictures opened to strong numbers this weekend through its TriStar label. Heaven Is For Real was brought in by Sony Pictures’ exec DeVon Franklin, a Christian minister who just published and has been promoting his inspirational book, Produced By Faith: Navigating the Road to Success Without Compromising Your True Self.
Roth tells me he became curious after seeing the book on The New York Times Bestseller Lists about six weeks ago. It reminded him of The Sixth Sense, which he made while running Disney, and he was surprised that nobody in Hollywood had called before he did. This was when the book was moving from a religious imprint to mainstream, and Roth really got in on the ground floor. The book has sold about 4.5 million copies, Roth said, and could do 10 million before the year is out. He’ll meet soon with the Burpo family, and doesn’t really see the movie as something that is limited to a faith-based audience.
“There isn’t anyone in the world who wouldn’t like to know what is waiting for them,” Roth told me. “When you consider this little boy came back and knew 9 or 10 things he shouldn’t have, to me, this is about hope. From that standpoint, it’s non-secular.”

A three-year-old tells a story to his pastor/father who then pens a book with the ghostwriter for Sarah Palin’s first book. Sounds like proof of heaven to me. Awesome. I feel so much better about my life now.
And in God we Trust…….$$$$$$$
This book should be placed in the same category as AMITYVILLE HORROR, which basically did the same thing to America (you know — tricked it) back in the 70s.
Look, preacher wrote this book, had Christian publishers, etc., along with PALIN’s ‘GOING ROGUE’ (co)-author being the (co)-author of this, and mostly all the interviews this preacher (and his son) did were on FOX NEWS. Unbelievable that this book was a bestseller. Well, no, it is believable, because people want to believe in something interesting and wonderful like this. But when you start looking at the facts, peeling away the layers on this propaganda onion, you realize this is a preacher using his child to fabricate a story to further his theology and make a profit.
I feel sad for you.
As do I. How unfortunate, but I will be praying for you. God works in spite of the hatred from unbelievers.
Sad indeed. Incidentally, what do you believe in, homework?
This book was amazing. I really hope they can do it justice.
With Alice in Wonderland, Roth had a huge budget, Tim Burton, Johhny Depp and Ken Ralston doing a story that is known worldwide…and, lots of luck with the global box office.
Is Johnny Depp playing the three year old in “Heaven is For Real”?…if not, this sounds like a very low budget dud, unless Mel Gibson directs it and markets it to the strong Christian marketplace he knows so well.
Good luck, Joe and Sony.
“a low budget dud” ??
#1 NY Times best seller
Already sold millions of copies
Being translated to more than 2 dozen languages
estimated to sell over 25 million copies by the end of this year
Don’t judge people who have faith and want to see stories like this told. I don’t need to see another man wearing a cape for 2 hours with explosions.
Thank you Sony for buying this.
…And Hollywood wonders why its stock is down.
How long before this book is labeled a fraud?
Awesome, I love science fiction movies.
You have got to be kidding me.
The right-wing faith-based crowd hates Hollywood.
Until they get to cash our checks.
speaking in sweeping generalizations like “right wingers” hate, or all of them are “fill in the blank” is just plain ignorant. Plenty of conservative film makers live and thrive in Hollywood. The “vast right-wing conspiracy” was a phrase coined by one of the Clintons as a political campaign tool.
Intelligent people speak in specifics.A great film, by a democrat turned republican never received the due publicity – this film found that the problem was not that inner city schools were failing because they were attended by poor black children — the problem was actually the teachers – they proved it by creating schools in inner cities with good teachers and a great curriculum – they are outdoing affluent towns’ schools in test scores all across the United States in these new schools.
If you want to feel certain you know there is no afterlife, jolly good. So what is wrong with a nice little – albeit corny – story of a kid getting very sick and then having a fantasitcal story to tell? Treat it as mostly or pure fiction if you want – for those who are secular, it can still be at least entertaining.
“If you don’t want to come to the party, then stay home; but why try to spoil it for those who choose to party?”
It’s the holier than thou using it to cash in. That’s the problem.
Plus, as an agnostic I find it odd that preacher’s son came up with this on his own. No influence/ encouragement from mom and dad?
Sounds like snake oil.
I guess you all will find out when the day comes.. Better safe than sorry huh? As for me and my family we will serve the LORD!!
It is time to wake up poeple!!!
Amen!!! Can’t wait to see the movie. The book was awsome!!! Yes Heaven is for real!!!!!
AMEN!! I’m with you !! (:
Extraordinary book with a powerful message of hope!
Did Dad ask him if there were any gay people in heaven?
I understand people not liking christians, what they stand for, what they do and everything about them but what’s with all the hate? Are you commenting about the book or just being christian-haters?
Maybe you should either read the book or talk to the family or both before spreading such negativity.
yo chill
At least nobody pretends that men wearing capes are real. And they don’t use them as extreme right wing propaganda either. Fail.
It would’ve been a far better and interesting story if the kid went to hell and back, just think the fun characters he could have meet, like Walt Disney.
They did make a book about that. Its called 23 minutes in hell. Read it sometime.
The “hate” is very disappointing . . . God help us to understand!
It is very disappointing but I think that what these negative people are trying to do is take our faith in Jesus away. They are not good people and Jesus specifically says in the Bible that the weeds and the wheat must grow together until time of separation. So in other words the good and the evil must live together. All we can do for these people are pray that they will change their evil ways. Basically pay no attention to them. They are busy bodies wanting to stir up chaos. I like to sing and if the devil don’t like it he sit on a tack sit on tack to stay.
I truly believe that God has something for even the doubters on this site. He’s allowing you to decide, for you to believe. No one’s asking you to go to Hell, or even Heaven. By the way while your smashing this book without reading it, you should looking into 23 minutes in Hell. You will only hope that’s science fiction and not an actual place you can end up for eternity.
A universe such as ours with so many questions unanswered could you not even wonder if there was something that created it all? That put you here on earth? That had a purpose and reason for your life? That had something so much for you than what this world has to offer? I shudder to think that instead of Christians’ being wrong that all of you doubting Thomas’ would be wrong. Than what? life just ends? You think that’s it? My heart and Jesus’ too aches for you and your hopelessness. He wants you to be in heaven with him as you too are his creation. But even more than that, that you would know him here on life for He is a living God.
I have known Todd and his wife for many years. We went camping, shooting guns along with another couple. If you Todd , there would be know dought in thier experience and Gods must want this story told!! Todd was our assistant pastor at the time, at sooner park wesleyan in bartlesville ,ok. I AM A BELIEVER
It is really sad to read most of these comments. They are filled with hate and anger and bitterness over a book. Some people just sit around all day and look for things to complain about. Nothing but negative things from them. Come on guys, try for a second to look for something positive to say.
This book was very amazing and believable. Many are inspired by it. Why should Hollywood overlook it? The christians who DO believe in HEAVEN are a huge market group. More so than those who don’t. This story deserves to be published. It was awesome. Sounds like all the negative comments really are superficial and have no basis on the book so their opinions are based on “nothing.”
A kid has a near death experience…and?
That’s not a movie, it’s an anecdote!
I think its a wonderful idea cant wait to see the movie
Wow….some people really have no faith do they?? It really is truly sad.
When we all know the truth it will be too late for some.
I read “Heaven is for Real” after I heard a radio interview with the father who was asked why he didn’t write the account sooner. He said he wanted to protect his son (from all of the unbelievers’ questions and remarks). But, then as they told their experiences to others in their community, they could see how God was using them to bring unbelievers into a relationship with Christ. It is just like God to reveal Himself through an innocent child who will boldly tell His truths! I am grateful to the producers for telling his story, so others in the US and those in other countries will hear the Good News!
