EXCLUSIVE: History is revising America’s most infamous family feud with The Hatfields and McCoys, a miniseries starring Oscar winner Kevin Costner. Costner will play “Devil” Anse Hatfield and will produce the mini, which has been given a green light and will premiere next year, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the bloody war between the two clans that has become a popular metaphor for bitterly feuding rivals. The mini will be produced by Leslie Greif’s Thinkfactory Media. “The Hatfields and McCoys is a classic tale of American history,” History president and general manager Nancy Dubuc said. “These are names that are widely recognized, yet few people know the real story that made them famous.”
Greif said that The Hatfields and McCoys has been a passion project for him for more than 20 years. “It was realized the day I met Nancy Dubuc, she made a dream come true when she shared the same enthusiasm and vision for this epic American drama,” he said. “And then to be privileged and fortunate enough to have a superstar like Kevin Costner as “Devil” is beyond anything I could have imagined.” As an avid history fan, Costner said he was thrilled to join “this dramatic re-telling of a classic and timeless tale that is forever immersed in the folklore of our country.” The project takes Costner back to the post-Civil War era he previously depicted in Dances With Wolves. Ted Mann (Deadwood) wrote the script for the mini, with revisions by Ron Parker (Broken Trail). Greif will serve as an executive producer with Herb Nanas and Darrell Fetty producing for Thinkfactory. Dubuc and Dirk Hoogstra will EP for History.
The Hatfield-McCoy saga begins with Devil Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy. Close friends and comrades during the Civil War, they returned to their neighboring homes — Hatfield in West Virginia, McCoy just across the Tug River border in Kentucky — to increasing tensions, misunderstandings and resentments that soon exploded into all-out warfare between the two families. As hostilities grew, friends, neighbors and outside forces joined the fight, bringing the two states to the brink of another Civil War. Their story also includes: a tempestuous love affair between Hatfield’s son and McCoy’s daughter, which had disastrous consequences; the execution of McCoy’s three young sons in retaliation for the Rasputin-like murder of Hatfield’s beloved brother; a New Year’s Massacre of the McCoy clan and burning of their home, which also sparked international headlines; a public clash between state governors; and ultimately the involvement of the U.S. Supreme Court. This marks History’s second scripted miniseries following The Kennedys, which was eventually dropped by the channel. Costner is repped by One Management and WME.

Have they begun construction of the bronze statue of costner inventing an oil separating machine for the closing shot of the film yet?
Shall the Monotoned One attempt an accent? LOL. So it’s a comedy then?
Too bad you’re so jealous of Costner. He’s a lot better actor than you–he must be, because he’s made a lot more money at it than you have. I’m sure he’s also a lot better looking.
I can only hope that the script is half as good as the one Eric Roth wrote a few years ago.
It’s better…
At least History won’t have to worry about what’s left of the killing Kennedy family harassing them into not airing this.
How could they be doing this, unless its meant as a reality show, where theyll spend 50 minutes of each show interviewing either modern family members or “reenactments” of the historical clan members? History Channel is sh*t now, NOT the sh*t!
Nice to see Costner making a comeback.
Strange how comebacks and bottom-of-the-barrel resemble each other so much.
i love kevin kostner ..especially him in open range with duvall my other fav actor
Hope Anne Sweeney and Ms.Schwarzenegger have signed off on this one. You never know what influential Hatfield or McCoy is out there pissed off and looking to reach out to them to get the project killed.
EX-Ms. Schwarzenegger
Sounds cool. Could do without the extreme language (attn: Ted Mann) of Deadwood and would benefit from Costner’s affection for American history.
Ton of potential for this one and wish I had an opportunity to be a part of it.
Just wish it was on cable especially since one of the writers wrote Deadwood.
Don’t really see THC making this project work. With Costner attached to star and the DEADWOOD writer’s script this could actually be a nice little mini; but THC doesn’t have enough capitol nor enough buzz to make this project anything more than a series that most people won’t even know came to air.
Costner + History channel = cool in an odd way
Such retelling of our county’s violent past can initially seem redundant in a world still plagued by violence, but I believe each time a story like this gets told it heals something deep in the human psyche in order for us to move forward toward a more peaceful global condition.
I think Kevin Costner has moved the masses in several roles throughout his career,”Dances with Wolves”, “Field of Dreams”, “Wyatt Earp”, “Open Range”, etc). He is cut out for this part, perfectly blending gritty/charming character portrayal with his love of history.
I would love to be a part of this juicy project. Go History Channel!
Devil Anse Hatfield and I share a common ancestor, Abner Vance. I am curious to see Kevin Costner’s portrayal of Devil Anse. I wish there were more information on the other cast members and their roles. I only hope that our region andour people are treated with respect and kindness during the filming of this mini-series.
I am not just a Costner fan but truely admire his ability to bring life to his character. Devel Anse was a unique, strong mountain man with high morals and family beliefs. He would describe himself as 6 ft of Devil and 200 lbs of hell. My grandfather, Hubert Hatfield, was born in Pike County and raised in Logan working the timber along side Devel Anse’s family and other Hatfield family members. I can wait to see stories told to me by my grandparent and my mother come to life.
I can’t wait to see this…..sooooo tried of the reality TV. It’s about time we had a good movie to look forward to watching. Wish they would do more good westerns without all the bad language like in Deadwood (it takes away from a good movie). Bring back good ole classic westerns like Lomesome Dove, Dancing with Wolves, The Sacketts, Conager. I know somewhere and someone in that city of Hollywood hasn’t forgot what a good movie is, or have they all left this world and took the memory of good TV with them. THANKS history channel….job well done.
Mr. Costner should speak with cast members of “Hatfields & McCoys” at Theater West Virginia in Beckley, WV. TWV has been doing H & M outdoor drama for years at Cliffside Ampitheather in Grandview, WV. He would do well to look up Steve Bush who portrayed Devil Anse for years and according to folks around the H&M region to be as close to the real Devil Anse as you can get. Looking forward to seeing this series.
I am looking forward to watching this show bout my g.g.g.grandfather and his family the told and untold stories of what it was like back then and how it all came to be apart of the Real MCcoy.
I can,t wait to see this short series, Mr, Costner Is a wonderful actor and plus many that are in the show as well… Thank you guys again for wonderful entertainment. And god bless.
when does it air on television
I am very excited to learn of this miniseries. My grandmother on my father’s side was Sadie Hatfield. I look forward to learning more of my history.
I watched the first night of the mini-series last night. It is truly a shame that the writers are compelled to litter this mini-series with such vulgar language (specifically the OVER usage of g*damn). This adds absolutely nothing to the story, the acting, or the historical significance of the production. Although I can believe it is possible this language may have been used by the Hatfields and McCoys, there is absolutely no need for it in the production. A simpler curse word would have sufficed. Thumbs up for a great story line, but all thumbs and toes down for the senseless use of vulgarity.
Absolutely love the movie. Would love to see more of these movies in the near future. There is no other movie out there that is well worth seeing then the great Kevin Costner. Cudos to Kevin Costner and the rest of the fantastic cast for putting a fantatistic historical movie just like “dancing with wolves”. Love Bill Paxton and Kevin Costner and the rest of the fantastic cast of the feud between the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s. Would love to see more of these movies which are worth the money to watch in the movie theatres. Everything is nothing but trash. Love Kevin Costner, period. He rules! Bridget, Love you Kevin and Bill. Great actors and movie period. Keep it up guys! Absolutely love this movie. Grade A plus, plus in my book!
Kevin Costner you rock!!!
