Warner Bros has released a new trailer for Green Lantern, the Martin Campbell-directed Ryan Reynolds starrer, which gives the most complete picture of what the picture is trying to accomplish. I am growing used to Deadline readers disagreeing with me, but I have to say, the stakes look high, and this is starting to look pretty cool. It opens June 17.

I like Reynolds, but this film seems really confused, like the screenwriters jammed in 5 different super villains instead of coming up with one strong plotline. And am i alone in thinking the CGI other Green Lanterns look…. awful?
Sarsgaard looks fun, though.
It may look like several different villains but there’s really only 2… and kinda 1. I guess his time being trained by other Green Lanterns may look like he’s battling villains – but he’s not.
They is only one villian in this movie and that is Hector Hammond. The others aliens are Hal’s mentor and trainers on Oa, not villians
Im glad you cleared this up, as the trailer makes it appear the villians are both Hammond and Parallax. I guess this will be the fallout of Hammond’s acquisition of a “piece” of Parallax.
But the trailer shows the evil cloud killing the bulging-headed guy. It even seems to show his corpse.
Of course Sinestro is a well known Supervillian but since it’s the orgin story it will mainly show him as Hal’s lead trainer. Maybe towards the end, but it looks like Hector Hammond will be the main villian for the bulk of the film.
Someone is going to lay an egg this summer, and my money is on this or Cowboys&Aliens.
Or maybe both.
Ditto, Mike.
If anyone can make Green Lantern a great film…it is Martin Campbell.
Martin Campbell is a great director, but…
I just don’t know, dude…I just don’t know…
Mwah!
Really? You think this did a better job of realizing the storyline? Let me guess, you LOVVVVED Transformers 2?
Poozer
Ha! @ the poozer comment.
I’m going to have to agree with Anonymous on this one. The movie looks way too confusing to bring in more audience members besides the typical comic fanboys. I’m still not digging the CGI costume. Reynold’s mask looks sooo fake.
What is so “confusing” about a movie trailer that you think audiences won’t get it?? Algebra is confusing (for me). The tax code is confusing. Green Lantern and friends battling bad guys? Pretty goddamn simple.
People may be saying “confusing” when they really mean unfamiliar. If you’re a GL fan then you’re immersed in minutiae: are Kilowog’s ears right? Where’s G’nort?, etc. If not, then if it’s wearing green it’s a good guy and they can make stuff out of green lasers. I don’t see how they could make it any clearer.
I really don’t care for this tendency to spoon feed audiences. Is it too much to ask an audience to pay a little attention to what they’re looking at? It’s Green Lantern, not Kierkegaard.
For the record, I was dreading this but everything I’ve seen makes me think DC might have their version of “Iron Man”. Even though Reynolds was born to play The Flash, I think he’ll do just fine as Hal Jordan.
I guess they are trying really hard to make this worthless movie look somewhat interesting…
I dunno. Looks even more cheesy now. All of the Lanterns look too cartoonish, I thought the point was to bring them to life and not look so corny.
Wow!! that is a very strange statement. This is a COMIC BOOK MOVIE. Why ‘o Why would the aliens look more real. unless they had a couple of alien models to pattern this look. Chill out, use your little imagination and enjoy it!!
When we saw this on TV the other day, only 5 seconds in, my wife said, “wow – I’m NOT seeing this.” She’s the litmus test for me as to whether a superhero type movie can cross over to huge mainstream appeal. I agree with her.
If I let my wife determine which superhero movies are worth seeing, I never would have seen The Dark Knight. Grow a pair and get your ass to the theater, you big sissy.
Agreeing with someone else’s opinion makes you lose “a pair” and turns you into something to be reviled simply because that person is a woman. No, that doesn’t make you weird at all.
And he didn’t say he wasn’t seeing the movie, he said her opinions re superhero movies have proved a good litmus test. That’s all. But maybe you don’t know what a litmus test is. Maybe you think it’s a pair of scissors.
It sure sounds like he’s not seeing the movie.
Dear Cobra Kai-sounding dude-
That’s exactly the point. Dark Knight got to its BO numbers based on a four-quadrant appeal that Lantern doesn’t seem to have. Same with Iron Man, Spiderman, etc. That appeal is embodied by the opinion of someone who does not read the comic. It’s obviously a really fine line to keep your fanboy cred while opening up the world to other fans. Note – ‘cred’ is short for credibility, not for the credits on the StreetFighter 2 machine that you’ve been rocking at the multiplex for the last 10 Fridays in a row.
Put me in a bodybag!!
Did you have to post that your wife does not like what she saw. Did she grow up reading the GL comics or did you?
Looks f’ing DOPE!
The trailer looks great.
Mark Strong is looking terrific as the mentor, and I think Reynolds and Lively’s chemistry will be pretty surprising.
Of all the contributors on Deadline that offer subjective opinions, I think Mike Fleming’s been the most level-headed one, so I’m definitely surprised, in a good way, that a mainstream journalist is actually coming around with a tradtionally fanboy property.
nice post Donald
Featuring the killer cloud from Fantastic Four 2 was probably not the best way to go.
Looked more like creeping feces to me…
Well….. um…. that IS pretty scary…
Agreed. Why does every “evil menace” have to be a giant black CGI blob? So audiences in Vietnam will know that it’s an “evil menace” without 10 minutes of exposition? If it’s fighting the good guy, it’s the bad guy. We get it. Dumb ass studio execs putting in their two cents: “We need an “Epic villain”. No, TWO Epic villains.”
As much as hardcore fans are looking forward to this; there’s still something wrong here. I know Strong will be good, I love Reynolds and I think Lively has presence – but there’s something “cheap” that I can’t quite put my finger on.
Was that BRAINIAC I saw in the film?!
Anyone else think the recitation of the ‘oath’ toward the end was nearly shudder-inducingly schmaltzy? In fact, most of the featured lines tended toward the hackneyed.
Looking good.
I must admit when I saw the first trailer, I was sorely disappointed and thought this would be an epic fail on the scale of Sucker Punch, but this and the wondercon footage have changed my mind completely!
I’ll watch regardless. but I don’t have a lot of faith. It looks pretty campy. Not that it can’t have camp, we just don’t want Supergirl camp.
WTF is up with grade-A awful CG getting a pass from Hollywood? This looks like it’s going to land up there with The Day The Earth Stood Still as one of the worst effects-driven ‘tentpole’ films ever.
I don’t read comic books, but I enjoy superhero movies if they’re done well. But the CGI in this film looks so PAINFULLY fake and cartoonish, that it’s really hard to take this film seriously at all. It’s the Star Wars Prequels all over again, with lots of fake, cartoonish looking things fighting other fake, cartoonish looking things. Hard to care about that.
Wow, that looks epically awful. CGI overload to the nth degree. And Lively can’t act a lick so that doesn’t help.
Sorry to disagree with you Mike, but this looks to me like the comic book movie that will finally put an end to Hollywood’s obsession with comic book movies. My bet: Underperforming first weekend, followed by a 75% drop off.
It won’t put an end to the superhero obsession if Thor, Captain America, and X-Men all do well.
Not sure about Thor either, though…
Looks like “Batman & Robin” cheese.
Sour grapes — It looks nothing close to that.
That is some awful animation and CGI. That punch that Kilowag(Michael Clarke Duncan) give before delivering that horrible one-liner looks horrible. What effects house worked on this? Doesn’t look like ILM. maybe Digital Domain or BUF? I hope this is good but the effects and complains that im hearing remind me of 2003′s Hulk. Production Design even looks similar. Martin Campbell is pretty uneven, he’s got great films and not so great films. He’s great when the script is and in this case i just don’t know. but that CGI is really bad. the Cloud, the animation looks like PS3 cinematic graphics
Still looks like the douchiest possible version of a Green Lantern movie. The cartooniest, douchiest.
If I’m willing to give it chance, it’s because of Martin Campbell. The guy has a talent for elevating mediocre material. Edge of Darkness was a lot better than it had any right to be. But having seen all the trailers to date, I can’t say I’m excited about Green Lantern. It doesn’t look very compelling and certainly not very fun. I like Mark Strong and Sarsgaard but Ryan Reynolds never feels like he’s playing anyone other than Ryan Reynolds.
Looks like a CW pilot
